Hi everyone,
You might know that I had a GTI stolen in 2015 and I’ve just had a lucky escape tonight. Basically a young lad walked into my garage as I was getting the car out. He’s then walked beside my drivers door and asked me to put the window down. As this point I floored it in reverse out of the garage and down the road. Close call.
Think I’ve finally had enough now.
-
Oh no.
You're possibly a little shaken, but hopefully you are otherwise ok.
-
I can’t begin to tell you how awful it was. I think I finally, after 20 years, need to give up on performance Golfs.
-
Wow,they just don’t care do they!
Has he actually come onto your property,or do you rent a garage?
The criminal fraternity love the Golf R.
Hope you have no further problems.
-
The garage is attached to my house so came straight into the property. R, gti, you name it, they want it. I actually think they were on the way to my neighbours to look at their bmw and Audi when they saw me put the garage door up.
-
Bloody hell,i can’t believe they would do that-perhaps I’m a bit naive.
Hope you got a good look at him,to pass onto the police.

Thanks. He had a surgical mask though and hoodie up so no chance of identifying him. Felt very opportunistic tbh.
-
Bloody hell, that's some brass neck.
Don't suppose his foot was under the wheels by any chance
-
Honestly Fred I have no idea how I didn’t run the second fella over as he stood at the bottom of the drive. All four pipes in his kneecaps.
-
Sorry to read this. Don't blaim you if you now got rid of it. Somethings are just not worth the hassle.
They do seem to just not care now.
Not sure were about in the country you live but this is happening more and more sadly.
Hope you manage to get over this ok.
-
Thanks Snoopy. I need to have a good think what I’m going to do but I’m also aware that they’ll take anything.
-
Bloody hell Michele, just seen this and am shocked.
I can remember your posts from when the red(?) GTI got nicked and you held firm sticking with sporty cars.
Where do you draw the line though? You don’t want the dirtbags breaking in for keys but you can’t let them beat you either.
It sounds like a narrow escape for you, it’s a good job you had your wits about you. Have your nerves settled down yet?
-
Thanks Andy. It was as just crazy thinking about it now. All a bit of a blur. Past experience always has me checking my rear view mirror first and that’s when I saw the second lad. He came right up to the drivers window and asked me to put the window down as he casually stood in my garage. That’s when I floored it. I saw the first one acting oddly just before. They were all of 17. I really think I should buy something else. Going to make some enquiries about selling the R.
-
Scary stuff, even if they were just kids. You’re not going to be able to settle or relax now I doubt.
But what of the R, it’ll need to be worth more than any finance owing? And what to replace it with that won’t leave you feeling a bit hollow?
-
Bear in mind the thing they will want it for is almost certainly for breaking for spare parts.
Anything thats remotely new is worth money for spare parts...
This is a racket I'd read about on the BMW forum, its caused by the UK insurance business selling off written off cars for "repair".... they can't repair it on an economically viable basis, so how will anyone else do it? Well the answer is, using parts from YOUR car.

Spot on there Fred. When my gti went that’s exactly what happened to it. That theft felt planned whereas this not so much.

Sounded like just a wander around and attempt to jack any vehicle they could.
There's probably some serious money for every car they deliver to the chopshop...
But unless you are planning on buying something old and worthless, the risk remains. Just swapping to a low spec golf or whatever won't do it - it needs to be an older vehicle. Look at that tweet, look at what they were stealing...

Nothing new in that though. The uk insurance industry has always done it. Thats what scrapyard parts were for.
The difference nowadays is ebay and the violence of the thefts or violation of a breakin.

All the best king monkey, I hope you and your family are okay.

Thanks Watts. I really do appreciate all the comments.
I’ve started looking at up gtis today as a solution. Think I’m going mad.

Just don't go for TCR! Even more desirable than an R imo lol 5 R's down my road and just one TCR
Even my local VW Dealer was happy to see me last week as they had only ever had 1 in the showroom and no owners lol
All the best King and glad you had wits about you!
-
Thanks. Think a few more days have put some perspective on the whole situation.
-
Thats a terrible thing to happen!
To be honest that was the reason why I didn't get an R (or a Subaru back in the day - really wanted one but the neighbours door was kicked in for the same).
I have always had a performance vehicle but kid myself that I don't go for the main ones, so m135i instead of R - maybe the RWD aspect kept these a little more under the radar.
Who am I kidding...
My Ring picked up the handles being tried on my TCR during the night and that freaked me out a bit for a while.
What I would say is that it doesn't matter what car you have old, new, fast, slow. These things will always happen. If you follow a local stolen car Facebook group - one for every area I guess - you will never sleep and never own any type of car.
I think we feel more at risk as we are more car savvy than some and know/hear about these things where as most mainstream - no car people hear off a friends car being taken and think nothing more about it where as it would sway our thoughts.
This probably doesn't help and I am sure I would react like you in the first instance - get a lower target car - but I hope you get past this as otherwise they have won and in reality you may not be that better of...
-
Thanks Cookie Monster. Tbh I think there’s no difference in theft risk between an R and gti. I’ve had a gti taken and that was a very well organised gang who had probably been watching for a while. You’re totally right that anything is a target. I’m definitely keeping the R. Stuff them all. They’re all little scroats who don’t deserve the time of day. We all work hard for our cars and I’m not letting them dictate what I chose to spend my money on. They can do one.
-
Must've been really harrowing to experience that. Disgusting how some people act. I'd be doing some serious thinking too if I experienced something like that.

Thank you. It’s pretty hard for us normal folk to rationalise I suppose.

Sorry to hear about your ordeal. Hope you wake up every morning feeling a bit better. reading this thread im starting to appreciate how lucky I am living in the south of Ireland in the countryside. I have never even locked my car at night when parked at home, keys usually stay in the car.
Hope they can bring that scumbag to justice though. Good luck
-
Thanks Carbon. I do appreciate every single comment. We all know how great this place is.
-
Can't believe the bare face cheek that he just wandered into your garage >:( >:( Really makes my blood boil
Shame you didn't run the fookers over ! Absolute scum bags. All of us work hard for the nice things we have in life and these low life pond scum think they can get want they want by just stealing it. Not that I'm an advocate for owning firearms in the UK, but makes we wonder if that happened in the US, that their brains would probably be all over the floor !
As you have said you can't let the c*nts win and beat you. Just get a big dog and tie an elastic band round it's willy to make it even more aggressive ;D ;D
Glad you are OK though.
-
Thanks Sootchucker. My overriding feeling is just one of total confusion now because of the way it happened. They never made any demands at all apart from asking me to lower my window but as you say, it’s the bare faced cheek of it. That’s why I’m so confused.
-
It may have been a distraction technique so as you try to work out what the guy wants someone else gets in the car. Strange to try that in a garage though.

Absolutely. Ideally they don’t want to come into your property as it’s a whole different ball game for sentencing I believe.
-
Lower the window, spray something in your face probably or a knife/hammer...

I’ll sleep soundly now Fred.

Shame you didn't have a front and rear dashcam.

Now that’s a good idea. Any recommendations? How much is fitting usually?

I paid 179 for nextbase 522gw and rear camera from Halfords....they offer fitting but don’t know the price as i fitted them myself, only took 30 minutes.
-
Thanks for the info. My cousin has said he’d do the front one for me but the rear can be a pig of a job.

The rear was really easy on my mk8. Fed the wire through the rubber near the rear hatch, then went under the edge of the roof lining all the way to the front camera, far easier than I thought it would be and totally concealed.

I agree with what Daver1rs said, the rear is just as easy as installing the front. Plenty of places to hide the cable in the rubber around the doors, edge of the roof lining, and joins in the window pillars.
Funnily enough I also have the same Nextbase 522GW front and rear camera. It's a great above-average dashcam, there are others out there which are a little better but it's far better than the majority of sub £100 dashcams. Only issue I have is that the rear camera is a bit rubbish at staying in place

can you remember which of the rubber tubes had the water pipe in for the rear wash.

Sorry can’t help, I went through the one on the right as you look at them.....and didn’t see the water tube,so I’d guess at the left one.
