ive got a 59 mk6 gti thats suffered the chain tensioner faliure
its done the valves and also cracked a piston unfortunately
im undecided on wether to get it rebuilt or just cut my losses and get rid as it is
ive no idea what its worth though so struggling to weigh up my options
what kind of value would it have in its current condition?
its only done 56k and has one previous owner
-
It's not worth much needing an engine but if your selling let me know a figure
-
sod it
ive decided, its being rebuilt with forged bottom end
too good a car to let go for next to nothing tbh
-
Why a forged bottom end
-
because spending this kind of money on it means i wll be keeping it
so im having a good engine built
next year i might put a big turbo on it,i wouldve done it now while its apart ideally but my budget cant stretch that far at the minute tbh,the engine build is quite expensive
there is not really an inexpensive way out of it though

Going forged is going to near double your costs though
-
i know
although the genuine vw standard pistons are actually more expensive than the mahle forged pistons
and theyre not very good apparently
ive pretty much got everything now I think
mahle forged pistons and forged rods
mahle bearings
arp head studs/bolts and main studs/bolts
engine builder is getting the rest like valves, gaskets, seals, chain and revised chain tensioner etc
couldve near enough got a new engine from vw from what its gonna cost tbh
-
That's why I offered to buy it before you started spending your money

Howdy,
Curious on what mine would be worth in a similar state - got a 2010 Mk6 where the chain's skipped. Going in next Tuesday for an inspection to see what the damage is, but assuming it's bad I'm bracing myself for a replacement engine (been quoted £2.5k fitted for a recon).

That is not a bad price assuming the quality is good as replacing chains and tensioner with labour is over a grand.
-
With the 12 month warranty on the recon it means I'd get at least another year out of the car for sure, which is cheaper than getting a PCP deal and still having a dead car to try and flog for scrap.
-
^ amazing how many people never seem to see this.
-
good luck with that
hope you get off lighter than I did
I think I was checking out the same recon engine option as youre looking at now, same cost anyway
how reconditioned are the engines? fully rebuilt?
i think the fact it seemed so cheap put me off tbh
i think i would have gone down this route if i just wanted to get it running to sell on quickly
