Title: Suspension - Advice needed!
Post by: tonman83 on 16 December 2016, 10:39
Merry Christmas!

I have a Mk3 16v which was placed on lowered springs by a previous owner, lowering the ride by 40mm.

I now live in the countryside with bumpy lanes, and earlier in the week one the springs broke.

Obviously I need to replace this, but I'm not desperately keen to replace like for like as the ride is hard and with what I think are standard dampers it's not great, plus I think that I would have to do all 4 corners.

I don't really want to go stock, and I would like a sensibly priced alternative, but I don't want cheap, crap coilovers.

There are loads of options out there, any advice would be very much appreciated.
Thanks

The AP and Vogtland springs and shocks kits are both good options for around the £250-£300 price range.

If you're fitting aftermarket parts get decent ones, crap stuff is false economy. Generally.

Thanks guys,

I spoke to demon tweeks today and they were talking about KW ST sport or Koni STR's

Any thoughts?

Totally agree about super cheap parts. I know KW are good, I don't know much about Koni's

Konis are excellent. Its been a long time but people use to get the koni shocks and put a different make spring on there as it was a really good compination. I want to say h n r. Spring...

Back in the day it was fairly common for people to put konis on a 911 and go rallying

Yes, my thoughts are you must be minted talking to demon tweeks!
-Every time I have tried them in the past for specific items they were very pricey.
So pricey its like they have already added the VAT ...but its a VAT free price!

Koni's are really good, if you can afford look at Bilstein stuff too.

Budget for a good 3D wheel alignment with someone who knows what they are doing after the install.

Not minted, just mis-guided!

Thanks for your input everyone.

I'm thinking about these, any thoughts well received.

No worries fella
iirc the STR kits use eibach springs with their shocks, gives a firmer ride but not uncomfortable, a good choice over stock.
Should give a drop about 30mm -not too low that you need to worry about lumps and bumps

Thanks LRV5.

I've got some problems with my other car that's been holding me up, and classic January lack of money.

I'm going to look to sort this at the end of the month. I'll post on here how it pans out.

Thanks for the advice every one.

The set you link to dont come with H&R springs.

The same company do them with H&R springs but they are about £85 dearer.

The STR-T kit we do come with H&R springs and are made to specific order, so take a few weeks (just shy of £400 delivered),
We do sell Bilstein B4 and Eibach kits at £340 http://oemandmore.co.uk/bilstein-b4-shock-and-eibach-prokit-lowering-kit-6195-p.asp and are very popular
