Title: Mk1 GTI Project underway.
Post by: acma on 09 March 2012, 20:19
Well I've just started (after months of debating) on my mk1 gti project.

I really wanted somewhere to store my updates and pictures etc, so where better.  I can also ask you peeps on issues when I'm stuck, which I'm sure will be plentiful.

I'm putting a mk3 2l long block, with a g60 head running twin 40's choked down to 32s.  Mahle psitons, low sump, brass valves, kent cam, with vernier pulleys.

Everything on the engine will be new, all nice and shiney

Hope you enjoy as much as I hope to, without all the cuts and swear words a plenty.

Mark

I'm just getting the bug with this forum thingy (not done anything to this level before) so bare with me a little.  But I intend to keep everything up to date on here.

I work for an engineering company (although I push pens in the office), I've had a spit made, which I'm going to get my shell on it and give it a full once over prior to going to the body shop...  I also have a donor car, which I'll get pics up of tomorrow for all to see.

Loving it up to now.

I will definitely be keeping an eye on this because I will have a mk1 project in the future :)

Well I say i'm fairly new to this.

I did this last year

I've put her into storage for the sunny days.

Well I've fitted the new water pump, after a couple of coats of laquer, also fitted the new water pump pulley (again after some laquer).  Worth noting, I fitted the water hoses and bolted them up prior to fitting the water pump.

They were a b'stard to get on, used a little washing up liquid and a lot of pressure

Well plans for today, inbetween taking the missus and little un shopping, is to dremel the head with a brass brush to get it all nice and clean.

I'll get some pics up of before and after.

Also with any amount of luck, the shell will land today too.  I'll also post a piccy of the donor car today too.

Picture of the donor car.

The car was in good shape prior to deciding to strip it, but the sills are a bit shot.

Oh and the interior.

I had these hand stitched (including the VW Logo, that too is hand stiched) about a couple of years ago and just placed them in the donor car to protect them.

They just need a good clean.

Nice seats...

Slightly concerned that the donor car doesn't look poorly enough to be stripped.  what's going to happen to it?

Well cannot believe how long t is since I last posted...

Don't panic I've been doing loads on the car.

After much debate I've decided to use the shell above, it was just too good to scrap.

Had new inner and outer sills wielded in.
Ground and cut out some of the engine bay.
Spent around 100 or so hours flitting the bay and plugging holes through the bulkhead.
I've had all the engine mounts blasted.

I'll try and get some pics up, as I've taken loads all the way along.

Oh and or anybody considering such a job, ensure you leave the guard on the grinder.  As I spent the best part of this weekend sat in a&e with a heavily ground index finger.  While the pain isn't too bad believe me the inconvenience of losing one hand is enough.  And no I don't have any pics just a few stitches as a reminder of my mk1 project

Well here are some pics I've been talking of, hope you enjoy:-

This is the engine bay after I'd done some work, ie cutting out the water retainer at the top of the bulkhead.

Oh and you can see I've also taken the outer wings off to see what state the inner wings were in too.

I've also pulled the wiring loom back through into the cockpit prior to painting.

Here you can see I've really taken to the flatting the bay back, going a little too far maybe

This is the pass side after hours of flatting back with some lovely fine filler

This is the driver side, you'll note here I've ground off a couple of little unsightly bits to help smooth the suspension leg down.  I've also spent hours getting rid of that seam sealant stuff the put everywhere at the VW factory all those years ago.

Well I got the blasted engine mounts back over the weekend, and to me they look gorgoues, ready for painting

I've decided to plug the original holes up where the loom came through,  I'm going to run the cables down the inner wing, given I'm going to be running carbs, I'll not need as many wires.  Have to say it looks lovely, cannot wait to see it painted.

Getting a bit sad now I know, but this arrived on Saturday.  My lovely ali under drive crank pulley.  What a lovely piece of machinery:-

Can you spot my problem though?  The water pump and crank pulley don't align up, I'm currently looking at the Mk3 powered steering pulley as it is also grooved.  But would appreciate any input at this stage?

Well anybody following this thread will know by now I don't really post as often as I should, however I'm sure you can see from the pics below I've been quite busy getting the engine bay ready for paint.

Here is the engine mount after powder coating

I've removed the whole of the steering and suspension system to enable effective cleaning of the engine bay, while it was out I thought I'd get it all cleaned up.

Finally the bay as it looks now.  This is after around 200 hours or so grinding, filling, flatting, painting, filling some more, flatting lots more and over and over until you end up with something like this.

Being honest I'm not 100% with it yet, but it's 95% there, hope you enjoy the look of the hard work that has gone into this

For those that want to know, I'm putting everything NEW back in the old girl from steering rack, track rod ends, suspension, hoses, bottom wishbones, with a full polly bush kit, engine mounts the list goes on and on at the expense of my pocket but I think it'll be worth it
