Probably a Mk1. 1984 must be close to the change over, I haven't seen any 'A' reg mk2's only B reg onwards. If you post some pics we could tell you for sure.

I place my bet on it being a mk2. I don't think any mk1's crept into 1984...

Weren't the 'campaigns' brought out in 1984 as a special edition to mark the end of the Mk1 range?

Possible but pushing it a bit. Just did some anorak-type research ?:)

The 'Campaign' model was available from August 1983 (A reg) until just into 1984. So a mk1 will not be on a B plate but it could be a very last of the line model that was registered at the start of 1984.

If Keith's is a mk1 it is going to look like this:

The Mk2 Golf went on sale in the UK in the autumn of 1983, the Mk2 GTI being available from May 1984, it was destined for great success.

mk1 campaign was available from August 1983 onwards, the last ones being sold early in 1984. The original Mk1s days were numbered, although the original shape was still available in the convertible version of the car until 1993.

Guess what we really need to know is whether it's on an 'A' plate or 'B' plate. Keith are you getting any of this? Maybe you could shed some light?
If it is a Mk1 it could be one of the rare 'campaign' models.......quite sought after.

If it is a mk 1...you might like to read this...the history of the mk1 gti

http://thebody.dnsalias.org/~daniel/bigshare/VW_Study.pdf

In fact... you might want to read it anyway...pretty interesting!
