Winter wheels
« on: 16 December 2018, 15:00 »
Hi thought I would start a new thread as a few have been interested.
Finally fitted winter wheels and tyres.
Wheels are from CM Wheels 18" Pretoria copies in gun metal grey.
Tyres I went for after doing a bit of research are Goodyear Ultra grip Gen-1. 225 40 18. Felt these were a good all rounder for reasonable price,  paid £408 delivered from Pneus-online, got a local independent local specialist to fit them on wheels for me.
VW centre caps stickers  from ebay stuck on caps provided with the wheels.

Sealed new wheels with Gtechniq c5 last weekend so had good time to dry.

So took Brescia's off gave arches and calipers a good clean sealed calipers with Gtechniq c2, would of like to used c5 but weather a bit damp and didn't have time for it to dry.
Fitted new wheels and quickly washed and dryed Brescia's, will clean and seal before spring, also got to get one refurbed.
Took for a little drive to check things and adjusted tyre pressure.  Garage had set at 34psi which felt a bit soft so up to 37psi front and 38psi rear, felt a better, once tyres bedded in after a few hundred miles probably adjust pressure a little lower.
Noticed ride was a lot better not as harsh as 19"Brescia which have Pzeros.
Can tell grip was good but need to wait a bit for them to bed in.
Overall pleased I got winters and like the look even though the wheels are darker than I thought.
Might get some black mirror caps to finish off my winter look.
Some photos for those interested in changing theirs.

Collected and being driven....... Gti PP 5dr DSG Tornado red, tints and Brescia's.

They look great. Been interested to see what 18” Prets looked like and they don’t look small as so used to seeing 19s. Really would like some winter tyres on.
NOW - 330e M Sport
GONE - 2018 Mk7.5 GTI Performance 5dr DSG, Tungsten Silver, 2017 Mk7.5 GTI 5dr DSG, Indium Grey

Looking good MK :afro:

A helpful thread too.

Out of interest, are they 8” wide? What offset?

Good to see the original bolt caps fit as well.

Nice work.

@MKgti; they look really good. I like them better than your Brescias, and anthracite grey with Tornado Red is a good combination.

The Gun metal goes really well with Tornado Red MKgti, nice choice.

I can confirm they are 8J x 18 with 45 offset. I have the same wheels from CM, but in Hyper Silver with Bridgestone all season A005s fitted. The Centre caps are blanks that come with the wheels. I bought 56mm domed metal stickers from Ebay which fit perfect.

Thanks hobbes

They’re looking really good on your car too :afro:
A better width and offset than OEM 18” Pretorias.

I purchased my winter tyres today, they'll be going on my Austins. I went with the Michelin owned Kleber Krisalp HP3 - bit of a bargain at £77 per tyre considering they score so well in the Auto Bild test. Only the Vredistein Wintrac Pro (1st) and the Conti WinterContact (2nd) scored better but they were considerably more expensive. The Kleber actually score the best for snow braking and handling which is my main concern for a winter tyre.

Previously I had Nokian winters which were also very good in the snow so it'll be interesting to see how these compare.
