Radar sensor mk7
« on: 17 April 2018, 10:57 »
Can people with the mk7 radar sensor below the number plate check to see if they have any movement or play please. Was washing the car on Sunday and noticed that mine moves, only slightly but it moves. I'm wondering if it hasn't been tightened properly after my front end was damaged and then repaired. Cheers

Definitely shouldn't move. The alignment is really sensitive, even a few mm will have big effects on the beam coverage at 100m.

I haven't had any failures or warnings on the dash so it must be pointing in the right direction, just a little miffed that it hasn't been fixed properly.

Pretty sure mine moves a little (just a few mm) as it's only fixed to a relatively flimsy plastic bracket so is bound to flex slightly. I'll have a look at mine at lunchtime.

**update** Checked mine at lunchtime and actually it's pretty rigid. I can move the sensor a mm or so by really trying (the plastic mount flexing) but just touching it, it's pretty rock solid.

Mine has a very small amount of play in it, but only when you try to move it. I think it's just the bracket flexing as someone mentioned.

I'm pretty sure it's not fixed by a plastic bracket but a steel bracket that's attached to the front cross member. Amazing what you see when a pheasant destroys the front end haha

The outer square is just trim, actual sensor sits on a metal carrier. Trim is there to cover up adjustment screws.

Mine was broken at one point (not that I noticed any impact) and needed 4-wheel alignment and new carrier, of course VW charged for this (just one of the reasons this will be my last VW for a while - it has died twice, second time now at just ten months old with massive electronics failure).

It might just be poorly fitting trim. I'll have a closer look at the weekend.

I suspect this is the reason for the 7.5 having had the sensor moved... not just cosmetic...
