Hi guys

I've just bought a new Golf GTI Mk 7.5

Based on previous experience, I always thought you have to run in (or break in) the engine for the first 1,000 km, then do an oil change after that

The sales executive told me that the GTI (and other new VW cars) no longer have this running in period, and don't need to have an oil change at 1,000 km anymore. Is this really correct?

Also, I was told that VW servicing schedule for all cars is one servicing per year, that's it. Again, this is somewhat different from what I thought was general motoring wisdom of twice yearly oil change

Would be grateful for some comments from seniors here. thanks!

Yes, its true... every new car I've had in at least the last decade has been like this too.

Well, thats of course what you need to do to keep your VW warranty intact, whether or not you fancy doing more I guess is up to you. I suppose if you are tracking it a lot, you might want to do rather more work on it. Driving it to work a bit, low mileage, probably doesn't need any more.

There are two servicing modes though, one for low mileage (12 month services) and one long life variable (20k). They get shipped in long life mode...

Given that a "service" these days is basically an oil change and inspection (plus any recall notices being done) there's not much point in keep paying them for anything else. Pretty much everything else is reported as a fault on the onboard computer, except tires.

Just to add to Fred's post, the 12 month service also has a 10,000 mile limit so if you're a high miler then you could be due for a service well before the 12 months.

The run in period is detailed within the car manual, I haven't got mine to hand but off the top of my head I think it says to not exceed 2/3rds of the top speed (100mph) until you hit 1,000km/600miles and then to gradually increase load after.

In reality as long as you're not constantly bouncing off the limiter and you ensure that the oil is up to temp before giving it the beans (which you should always adhere to) then you'll be fine. Just don't baby it, make sure the first 600 miles are driven with a variety of engine revs through a variety of gears and not sat at 70mph on the motorway.

I followed this advice and my engine has used 500ml of oil over nearly 10,000 miles. VW consider up to 1L per 2000 miles 'normal'.

There is no recommended running in period, or even running in service. Some higher specification performance cars non VAG have this (I know BMW M cars still do) as they run a different oil for running in period.

However as above, its advisable to vary driving style, speed and engine RPM for the first 1000 miles to sufficiently run the engine through its minimum and maximum operating limits which would in theory highlight any issue with the engine. It wouldn't be advisable to take it on a hard track day with a few hundred miles on the clock, but at the same time driving conservatively may not push the engine to its operating limits which would be of no benefit long term.

I have known enthusiasts and specialist carry out an oil change at 1000-1500 miles or so. Quick and easy to do and no harm in doing so but by no means a requirement in the service schedule.

You can run all Volkswagens (with a handful of exceptions, UP! etc) on either Fixed or Flexible servicing regimes. Fixed is a Time/Distance regime of approx 10k/12 Months. Flexible is a Longlife regime which is up to 18K/2 years using an oil quality sensor to detect when the oil needs to be changed.

Be wary of Flexible service regime with performance models, I have known cars set to flexible and require an oil change in less than 10k if driven hard. Remember it is flexible and UP TO 18k/2 years approximately so it not a guaranteed way to reduce servicing costs, and not recommended unless driving 25 miles or so a day with regular long distance, constant speed driving etc.

My advice would be any performance model should be serviced every 12 months/10,000 miles as an absolute minimum, with hard use/track days etc I would advise reducing this (based on personal experience) to 6 months/6000 miles. By no means is this a requirement for service schedule, or warranty etc but would certainly be beneficial i'm sure in the long run if the car is used to its full potential on a regular basis.

I would agree but it depends if you lease the car and hand it back after three years or if you bought it with your own money and want to keep it for longer. Lease company auctions it off so they don't care as long as you keep to within 2 weeks or 1000 miles of what it shows on the dash. You have to drive it quite badly (only short distances or very heavy footed) for it to ask a service on flexible intervals before 10k miles. I get full 18k miles on oil change in my GTD and that frequently sees heavy right foot up to the 143mph or so it will go on German motorways (when I get the chance to take it there).
