Comments on water beading please
« on: 30 April 2017, 15:17 »
Hi, can anyone tell me if this standard of water beading is about "average" ? Versus the amazing results on this thread
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=280225.50 (My detailing marquee....and a spot of spring detailing!)

It was a very simple process of:

1. Wash
2. Clay
3. Wash
4. Air dry
5. Apply Victoria Collectors Wax - as per instructions http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wax/victoria-wax/victoria-collectors-wax-3oz/prod_309.html

Is this what I can expect unless I go for extra stages?

Being honest, it's not great beading, I would put it slightly below average for a waxed car.  Could be the wax, or the application. Was it a single coat of wax?  Are you sure it was buffed off properly as hard to see on a white car.  You could try applying another coat to see if it gives improved result, or strip back to bare paint and add a base sealant such as Poorboys Ex-P (wax needs to go on top) which will give additional protection, shine and most likely improved beading.  Alternatively you could add a Quick Detailer spray wax/sealant on top which will give temporary improvement, choose one compatible with a wax as some nano or polymer sealants won't bond well to wax and lifespan will be shortlived .  Or once this wax has diminished, try an alternative wax or sealant.

Yes, the roof was a single coat, the bonnet (not shown) was twice, but similar results.

I think it was buffed properly, certainly feeling very smooth and glassy by hand afterwards. I don't think I will try and quick fixes and go for another wax, but now I have a big tin of Victoria's....

That's where sample or panel pots come in, usually about 30ml, sometimes 50ml, enough to do a car around 3 times, without having to commit to a big pot if you don't like it.  I can highly recommend DoDo Juice waxes, their Supernatural Hybid Paste would be a great choice for a white car, or something like Diamond White or Light Fantastic.  I used Supernatural Hybrid used on my black gti, and it's a fantastic wax, but I found it a little too glassy and crisp for black, lacking in depth, but the very qualities you want in a wax for a white or silver car.  I've used DJ Blue Velvet Pro and Purple Haze Pro too and all DJ waxes I've used gave great beading.

Supernatural sample pot.  http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/wax/dodo-juice/dodo-juice-supernatural-30ml-panel-pot/prod_442.html

Also excellent are Collinte waxes.

Thanks, ordered sample pots of Diamond White (hard) and Bilt Hamber Finis Wax to carry out a comparison.

You won't be disappointed with Finis , or either of them to be honest.

I've always preferred DJ hard Wax to the soft and think it has the edge beading wise. Let us know how you get on, be great to hear about the comparison.  Are you going to half roof in one and half in other?  Best to strip the Victoria wax off first (IPA/panel wipe) before applying the new stuff, or just wait until it's disminished.

I will use the bonnet for an easier application and I will find IPA panel wipes.

^^

It's Reflex Silver. Although I did mistakenly call it white in one of my posts....oops.  But what's good for white is good for silver and vice versa.
