Title: Perfect day for the air con to not be working
Post by: Mag_Pie on 31 July 2020, 20:08
I came to use the air con today and got no cold air

Not sure how to describe it but usually when I turn on the air con there is a whoosh type sound which stops followed soon after by cold air. All I’m getting is the whoosh noise permanently.

There is also no click or idle increase when turning the air con on.

Just wondering what to expect when I go to the dealers as it’s still under warranty, will it all be covered even if it’s a basic issue such as low gas?  I’ve had a quick look under the bonnet and can’t see any obvious marks or dribbles.

Cheers

Have you looked at the condenser for stone strikes? The mk7 is generally pretty well protected but it's still possible...

More to the point why was the climate control off in the first place  Never turn mine off.

i think the dealer would see that as something to charge you over the odds for.. groupon are doing aircon recharge via ATS for about £40 currently

thinking about doing mine....turned my aircon on and it took a few more seconds than instant which caused a minor discomfort :nerd:

If that pressurising whoosh doesn't go away, my money's on a leak. Take it to the dealers. If they deem it to be stone damage then you'll have to pay for that and it's about £700 at dealer rates. If I got that news I'd be going to an Indie for the repair.

Thanks for all the advice. At first I remembered that I’d been messing about with the driving mode button so hoped it was in ECO mode. Sadly not, had a look through the grill at the condenser and whilst there are some small dings in the fins (surprised when I looked) there doesn’t look like anything obvious on the actual element bars but that doesn’t rule out anything at this point I guess.

How will the dealer fault find, do they put some sort of dye through the system and see where or if it shows itself?

I hate people messing with my car 😢

Is it a major dismantle job to replace a condenser. The warranty is up at the end of the year, is it a doable DIY job with time and patience?

Just been googling and it looks like the entire front end has to come off, is that true

Doesn’t look like an overly expensive part, I guess it’s the labour.

Ouch, might have to open the windows for a while.

And that's exactly what I did...

Just to update, the car went in last week for the air con to be checked. They topped up the gas which was low and checked for leaks, nothing found. It held pressure during all the checks/tests for leaks so I ended up paying for an air con service. Still seems to be running nice and cold this week so I’ll just have to keep an eye on it I guess.

Hmm I know, at least the visit will have been logged and I can monitor it.
