I’ve noticed there’s very little activity on the Detailing forum board these days - only 10 active posts this year up to the end of May. Compared to the same five months a couple of years ago, there were 26 active posts.
There could be a variety of reasons for lack of activity; perhaps because of the pandemic, forum kmembers probably aren’t doing as much detailing if they haven’t been using their cars much (this certainly applies to me). Or maybe people are entrusting the many £5 - £7 hand wash outfits to keep their pride and joy clean, or (God forbid!) they’re letting the VW dealer give it a scratch and swirl treatment every so often. Some of the ‘diehard detailers‘ from a couple of years ago may have moved on from their VW’s to other brands, so don’t visit the forum now.
What are people’s thoughts?

I think the whole forum has quietened, except for threads about new cars on order or what to buy there doesn't seem to be much else. As for this forum, I think it has been a steady decline over the last year or two. Some key people have either moved on or lost interest and there haven't been many newcomers. Plus when people do post there's little if any response - to generate activity there needs to be activity! Going forward, I can only see further decline which will be a shame.
Personally, I just don't get much chance to clean mine let alone do anything more involved although I have bought a few bits recently including a glass polishing kit.

Yes, it certainly does. We don’t even see our our ‘diehard detailer’ Rebecca (Booth11) much - if at all - these days.
Maybe more people are also investing in ceramic coatings and having them applied by professional detailers, in which case they’ll probably be doing very little detailing so may not have much to contribute to the Detailing forum board, other than a few pictures just after having the ceramic coating applied.
I agree, this forum in general does seem much quieter these days, and with the general lack of enthusiasm and love for the mk8, it’ll may continue to get quieter still, although that could change when the performance mk8’s are available to order.
Some VAG forums are still fairly lively though - e.g. VWROC.com, Seatcupra.net, uk-polos.net, golfmk7.com.

Do these specialist coating applicators include for making good any minor paint damage before the specialist coating? Its fairly obvious you would carry out any major paint damage before taking the car to a specialist but what about stone chips...will these be fully repaired and made good as part of the application.

I’ve never had anyone apply a ceramic coating to a car or mine (I enjoy machine polishing and waxing! :smiley:), but I doubt the standard price a professional detailer would quote to prepare / correct the paintwork and then apply a ceramic coating would include repairing stone chips. If they were able to do this for you (they might not have the skills nor equipment, especially if paint spraying some areas was necessary) I dare say there’d be a separate charge.
You’d probably need to either repair them yourself before getting your car ceramic coated, or if you didn’t feel confident enough doing to yourself, consider getting them repaired by someone who does SMART repairs.
