Title: My rev counter has a mind of its own
Post by: albo on 15 May 2003, 12:56
I have a 1993 MK3 GTI 8V. :-[

When the car is cold and only for about the first 5 minutes after starting, when sitting at a standstill, the rev counter flickers up and down erratically between 800-2000 revs, with no change in the engine's revs.  If I press the accelerator pedal to take the engine's revs above 2000, the problem stops.  When the revs fall back to idle, the promlem starts again.

Does anyone know what could be causing this?  Has anyone else suffered the same problem?

Albo ???

Hello. If the change is only visual and the engine revs are not increasing then it sound like an electrical fault.  The Mk3 are well known for silly electrical problems. Check for dry negative battery connection crease it etc.. Also check for water leaks. Look at fuses etc check all the silly things....Hope this help....If not..?
