Title: Mk 6 GTI bonnet insulation problems
Post by: elliottwj on 28 August 2018, 20:59
Not sure if this is a common problem or not but my bonnet insulation is hanging off, the attachments just don't seem to be able to support the weight. Has anyone else experienced a similar problem? If so what did you do?
What does everyone suggest purchase a new genuine one from VW (silly money for what it is) or purchase a second hand one from a breaker?

If you Google ‘mk6 Golf bonnet insulation issues’ you’ll see it’s quite a common problem.

When I had my mk6, I didn’t have any problems with mine though.

I had this problem with my Mk5. Ended up solving it quite quickly and cheaply using some pieces of leftover  uPVC tubing. See "Drooping under-bonnet sound insulation" on https://www.stuartdalby.co.uk/vwgolfmk5/under-bonnet-noises

Hope that helps,
Stuart

Glad it's not just me then, I was looking at going to a breaker to get a second-hand replacement but if it was a common problem there isn't really any point. DIY clips shown here http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=312550&highlight=insulation&page=2 are the best solution I've seen, might have to give them a go

I tried stiffening the tabs with cardboard but that did not work for long so eventually went the US link route but tidied it up with short lengths of gorilla black tape across each slot and this seem to have worked for over a year.

had the exact same problem when my mk 6 GTI was barely 2 years old.  Took it back to the dealer - changed it under warranty.  Guess what... the damn thing broke again after another 3 years.  Out of warranty by then, i just left it hanging loose.  The insulator was about 120 euro then.  Was actually thinking taking it off completely but with the temperatures down here i didn't want to risk it.  Now with the mk7 I have noticed there are substantially more clips around the insulator.
