Title: Is this the right forum for site problems?....
Post by: RedRobin on 14 April 2008, 21:35
I know I'm not the only one to report that this GolfGTI.co.uk site regularly hangs blank on access to any of the forums - About 6 times today so far! It's random and touch and go and emptying cache or quitting browser etc doesn't make any difference. Other sites in the same online session don't hang at all - Not even MySpace!!

I'm on a high spec desktop Mac running OS 10.5.2 and latest Safari browser.

It's nothing to do with your home machine. If you look at the stats the the page views per month has pretty much doubled in the last 3 months - can/should 60 quid a month in hosting be able to cope with that? That is the current discussion :)

150+ online with ~12 queries per page refresh = heavy load, even for a dedi server

currently researching sperm donation prices to fund hosting - may have to export to chernobyl for a better price.

Ha ha ha, I've said it before but I'm happy to contribute a little towards the costs if they go up. Maybe I should add some scene tax to my butties at Stonor?

The original scheme was the Site Associates where you paid jv some money for a T shirt and that helped towards upkeep.
Then there was trade sponsorship and then the ads up the top.

Another forum I'm on recently asked for donations. That was a tenner but a much smaller site than this.

I dont see an easy solution as some people are more than willing to cough up a few quid, but the vast majority wont! and annual subs would be a pain to administer!

I guess if jv needs some cash he'll ask.

It doesn't help that 1&1 have become more and more unreliable for database requests. £60 p/m should get you a decent dedicated decent machine. Is the forum running the latest optimized code?

i wouldnt mind paying a yearly subscription fee or something for this site

as said above the amount of hassle this site has helped me with :afro: and if it hadnt had been for this site i think we'd all be back at the main dealers everytime filling there pockets with cash

Passion ford run a similar scheme "gold membership"

to be fair that place is MASSIVE with huge amounts of traffic , but you still ocassionally get the od
"why are we paying for gold memebership" "what does our money go towards" kind of threads

this place seems more "family" so maybe a contribution donation sceme would be better , or as is now you wanna help out , instead of buyin 1 set of stickers buy 2 - put some in your office

In fact - £10 to whoever gets at golfgti.co.uk sticker in the most obscure place

Haha, thanks for all the comments. It's not as simple as chucking some money at the problem. Still working with the hosting company to work out what is best. Some changes were made last night so we shall see...

FYI a set of stickers makes about a pound for the site which probably just about covers the ones that are given away free at shows

Charge more for the stickers then!

Or get around to getting some new T shirts!

ive seen on some communities a "donate" box (usually done via paypal) and it's totally voluntary and you can do it how often or little as you like. Those who like to remain anon can do so also!

TBH you should make that golfclocker bloke stump up more money  Maybe he can knock some mileage off golfgtiforum.co.uk and make it run like new again

None of the merchandise makes anything much, it just offsets the free stuff!! Don't really intend it to, just a bit of fun to show you 'belong'

Len - order in batch of say 30 polo shirts to make the price ok, say it costs 300 quid. Have them sit at my place for maybe 18 months until they all sell. Make perhaps 2 quid a top after p+p, net result 60 quid in the site fund - 1 whole month of hosting paid for. Doesn't really work does it?

oh shi7.... its gonna break down every 5 minutes then!!

But consistently every 5 minutes - that's the unreliable reliability you can afford from a MK2, with the MK3 on tow in the distance.

Just blobbed out on me, A dedi server should be able to serve the forum without breaking a sweat if it's SQL it can keep up with a lot of requests far more than are been served here I would say :)

What flavour of SQL?

Hopefully it is being run on MySQL, out of interest where is the site hosted?
for £60 I might be able to get a shared box, but it's hosted in Canary Wharf on 1GB/fibre lines to the UK back bone.

1&1 have a few data centres, 1 in Slough and a major 1 in Germany.
But it look like the domain name was registered with 1&1 but is hosted with fasthosts.
Title: Re: Is this the right forum for site problems?....
Post by: jv on 20 April 2008, 11:15
other way around...

hosting is with 1+1, base dedicated managed server.

registrar is fasthosts.

Slap 1&1's wrists and ask for money back due to down time
