sick 170 tdi GT Sport
« on: 31 March 2018, 14:14 »
Hi All I've just joined - I'm a vw nut and I've had a Mk1 - Mk2 Jetta - Mk4 tdi & now have both a mk5 170 GT Sport (DSG) and a Mk6 140 tdi. My 170 tdi is a real dream of a car but over the last few months its not been starting. Or at least struggling to start. I've had to to two seperate dealers who have not been very helpful they have replaced a engine sensor and fuel pump but nothing has really helped. I'm keen to get it going again, but all the dealer has suggested is to continue replacing parts (at full vw list price which is getting a bit heavy) to find the fault. To top it all off its now beginning to get sticky gear shifts be that engine or gearbox I don't know. Its only got about 60k miles on the clock, any ideas?

Hi Gents - I'm thinking letting it go as a parts vehicle

I’d start with the basics and get the battery checked out

Thx Rhyso - I've had a new AA battery fitted about six-eight months ago. VW tested it (failed) and AA tested it a few days later on VW property (it passed) so they agreed to disagree.

Ok. Is the alternator working properly and keeping the battery charged?

You may also have a weak starter motor
