Title: Quoted £275 for minor service.
Post by: Ooosh on 07 April 2021, 03:44
My local VW dealer has quoted £275 for a minor service.

https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/owners-and-drivers/servicing/pricing-for-cars-over-3

According to VW it should be £184. I’ve emailed the dealer but no reply.

What are other people paying for a minor service?

(Clubsport S if relevant.)

Perhaps they have included the cost of a brake fluid change?

My local dealer insists on adding an air con service (refresh and re-gas) by default too, so ask for an itemised quote and see what else has been added. Chances are it’s not just the service.

@Ooosh; is your car on VW’s time and distance service regime? If not, and it’s on the flexible / long life regime, that might explain the higher price (the prices quoted on VW’s website are for cars on annual time / distance servicing).

Also, in the fixed price servicing terms and conditions, it’s states that the prices quoted for fixed price servicing are only available at ‘participating Volkswagen authorised repairers’. It could be that the dealer who’s quoted you a higher price isn’t a ‘participating repairer’, although as @Watts and @RM have said, it’s more likely the dealer has included other work within the price you’ve been quoted but not told you! I’d be asking for a breakdown of the quoted price as @RM has suggested.

Link to the terms and conditions for VW’s fixed price servicing for cars over three years old below;

Thanks chaps. I’ll see what else they have included.

@SRGTD I have the car serviced annually or whenever it does 10,000 miles. Until Covid I never hit 10,000 miles first but now regularly do 2000 miles a month commuting from Cornwall to Gatwick. (Used to use Flybe then the train but now have no choice but to drive 3 or 4 times a month.)

2000 miles a month!

On a CSS....

That's eating a lot of value out of that car.... have you thought about swapping it for another? I'd recommend a GTD for mile munching.

I know it’s crazy. Consequence of Covid.

However I have decided to keep this car indefinitely. Had a GR Yaris for a bit as a potential replacement but did not bond as much and it did not fit my needs.

So I figure if I never sell the CSS the miles don’t matter at all. And it’s only temporary until train timetables go back to normal.

Is the CSS much fun to drive over that sort of distance?

Does yours have the aircon or not?

Must be like driving a tuned up Astra van....

Cars are meant to be driven. A sad world we live in when people don't drive their cars for fear of putting on miles for the next owner.

True, but 2000 miles a month will end it quite quickly.

If you are happy with that then fair enough - I've done it enough to know what happens but I've never cared because it wasn't my own car.

CSS's are quite rare beasts indeed, something VW never made before and probably will never make again too.

Seems a bit of shame to just beast it into the scrapyard IMHO.

Yes it is - my average speed is 62mph over the last 5000 miles! lol

Yes it has aircon.

It is - being partially furloughed (on and off an on and off) I have done some gardening and labouring. Take the CSS.

The car is still worth what I paid for it so as far as I am concerned I have had 4 years free motoring.

It still looks like new and smells like new inside. Not a mark on it. Not even a scratch on a wheel. (Have I cursed myself? lol)

Been fortunate enough to have owned some pretty special cars. This is right up there and I have no intention of driving it into the ground.

It is maintained to the highest standards. And I am still only at 23,000 miles so I hardly think I am killing it.

But I have no intention to ever sell it and I am happy to keep it maintained absolutely standard to perfection. So this temporary use rate is of no concern to me.  Get your point but I would rather every minute in a car is a minute I enjoy rather than one I dread!

What an interesting thread for a simple enquiry about service costs!

Can I ask why you didn’t like the GR yaris?

I did like it - just not more than the CSS!

Downsides - No underseal so winter use would have to be limited. Diff service every 6 months. Service intervals every 6000 miles. 18mpg. Was fun to drive with the lane assist switched off but didn't grab me anywhere near as much as I expected.

Plus financially it did not stack up as a good long term car. Unlike the CSS. (And my previous long term hot hatches such as R26R, Clio Trophy.)

Yikes 6000 mile service interval and 18mpg!

Sounds like a Kia Stinger

I test drove one just before Christmas. My main disappointment was that it wasn’t fun to drive at anything less than flat out- unlike many very fast cars which can be.

I remember thinking then that if I was to buy an impractical hot hatch, I’d much rather a CSS.

If your 2k miles a month are enjoyable miles, I’d have no qualms in racking up the mileage.

Thanks chaps.

Dealer has just rung back.

They will honour the £184 and chase up wether or not the GTi should be on the exclusion list!

So thats £90 saved.

Some cars are meant to be driven less than others

Ooosh, which dealer do you use, Truro or Plymouth? Just out of interest.

Silliest thing I ever did was not buy a CSS. Cynicism and unfortunate timing to blame! I don’t think I’d have ever sold it either if I’d bought one.

Quite right. The best cars should be driven more often. That’s what you meant wasn’t it?

Is that £90 towards the 570?! Surprised you worried about £90 bill for VW what’s service cost for the other? Lol

My Golf had only completed 4K miles on it's first birthday late last year - but of course a service was required nonetheless.

I chose a nearby VAG indie, who did the work using genuine parts and logged the fact onto VW UK's service system for
a total of £136 - or around £50 less than the local dealer wanted for the same job.

It’s always worth considering getting a service plan if buying a new VW. I got one when I bought my car last year. The cost was £200 and covers the first two services (one minor, one major) on the time and distance service regime.

The price of the service plan has increased since I got mine - it’s now £269. but still looks good value compared to VW fixed price servicing prices (minor £184, major £354, total £538) which I know are for cars 3 years old or older, but I doubt those prices would be too much different for newer cars.

It's definitely worth paying for the service plan for any new vw.

Curiously it seems other oem's don't offer anything like that value for prepaid services.

I was offered the new car 3 Year Service Plan for VW's standard set price of £496, which I had no problem in declining.

TBH it would have to have been half that price for me to be tempted, given that only 2 'official' services are required before the car's 3rd birthday/end of warranty period. I'll check with VW just before then about any service bulletins/updates due, get those sorted if needed and from then on it'll be myself and the VAG indie doing the servicing alternately.

That's curious, I think mine the other week was just over two hundred quid. My previous 17 plate was slightly lower.

No brainer really.

This time they even offered me twelve monthly installments at zero percent too.

Possibly the supplying dealer sales guy was trying to claw-back some profit, given that the car was heavily discounted and he seemed less than impressed when I later stated that no form of credit would be required.
Nor did I offer them my potential trade-in, or want any of the other option packages on the new car. He tried to claim the Service Plan was a good deal, but my withering look must have shown it was a non-starter...

AFAIK the official VW service plans are only two year plans covering one minor and one major service. There used to be a three year official plan, but VW stopped offering that some years ago. Maybe the 3 year service plan you were offered was the dealer’s own version, or maybe it was a servicing + maintenance plan?

VW do have a service plan for cars over a year old or under a year old and have had its first service. That plan is considerably more expensive; £495 for a minor and major service, so only slightly cheaper than the £538 cost of those two services if you ‘pay as you go’.

For the sake of a phone call I’d rather save £90.

Yep the McLaren will be about £1000 for a service.
And the warranty £3000/year now the car is 3 years old. Not sure wether to extend that or not!

Few bags of plaster in there and some mucky buckets is what you need.

You could also add a vauxhall astra badge and a sticker that says 'no tools left in this van over night'... Sorted!

Just thought I'd share that I had my year two service carried out last Friday under my 'Black Friday' service plan.

This was an inspection service so had oil and filter plus cabin filter changed, as there's no book to be stamped I received several A4 plages of the work carried out broken down into sections, coolant was checked and the strength noted.  Half way through I was sent a video letting me know that the only thing they picked up was that my front tyres were down to 3.5mm which I knew and will be replacing all four of the original BS in the next month or so.

I did mention my saggy under bonnet liner which they replaced without any issue.

My dealer seems to like giving out T-Roc's as courtesy cars and this time I ended up with a T-Roc cabriolet which was a first (not my thing though).

I didn't even have to ask them not to wash my car as Covid restrictions seemed to have stopped this.

Overall a pleasant experience.
