Mk1 Leon fr vs mk5 golf gt tdi?
« on: 03 March 2013, 21:42 »
Looking at getting a new car, was set on getting a mk5 gt tdi. But started looking at other options. I've always liked the mk1 Leon. So just wanted to see how the gt tdi and fr compare. What are the engines like? Reliability etc?

Cheers :afro:

150's suffered from cam wear problems

140's have chocolate turbo's

The Leon is the better looking car but the MK5 has the better chassis

My advice is to drive examples of both and go from there

I like the look of the Leon, but the basic interior would annoy me to the point of wishing I'd got something else :undecided:

The interior of the Golf would seal the deal for me.

Its the exact reason I bought an Audi as I felt it wasnt a step up from the MK4

It's a shame, as I don't feel like the Seat models are that bad, but the cheap cheap interiors ruin any exterior design efforts! :undecided: My ex had the Ibiza FR '55' plate, and the interior was more basic than my 2000 Golf GTI!! Factor in dumping her... Maybe?

Ex mk5 owner, a current mk6 GTI owner and mk1 Leon 130 tdi current owner.
The Leon is from an engineered point of view superior screwed together and better thought about from a design engineered point of view. Its better undersealed, does not suffer all the rust issues the mk5 does. All parts are cheap and better engineered.  its black inside but does not rattle like the mk5 or 6 as its better designed and engineered mountings afterall its an old Audi a3 dash. Does not suffer the ageing stickyness of touchy feely plastics or modern plastic easy marked syndrome.
Yes its not independent rear but the simple engineering is a bonus for long turn ownership. The engine don't seem to suffer many design issues.
Intact I'm still not 100% which to keep! When the time comes to make the choice.
Head as a design engineer says keep the Leon without a shadow of a doubt there is no contest......but the hart says the GTI as I'm a GTI fanatic....
