Title: Dogbone Mount Insert on GTI
Post by: MjrSharpe on 04 February 2019, 12:07
Hello all. I'm considering getting a dogbone mount insert for my car, possibly a black forest industries one or ecs. I was wondering if anyone has one fitted and has any opinions? Thanks

Hi MjrSharpe, after a bit of research, I had the 034Motorsport one fitted to my 2017 GTI 7.5 and once the initial NVH died down (or I stopped noticing it!) I really liked it the mod.

The traction definitely improved from standing starts and after a while I only remembered it was there when the engine started. It's hard to describe but it does feel different - there's a youtube vid that shows how it is restricting the movement on start up and that's what you can feel.

Unfortunately it doesn't fit my Clubsport mount otherwise I would have it transferred over. I know you're looking at the BFI and ECS ones but if you do change your mind and fancy the 034 one, give me a shout - it's the version 1 style and I now need version 2!

Hello Andy. Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure which sort my car needs, but I'll get it jack up and have a look and let you know. Thanks for the info as well.

I'm afraid you have to look at the mount as I was told there's no guarantee they will be the same.

As an alternative to jacking it up though, I started the video camera recording on my phone and put it under the mount on a bit of cardboard to see which version it was.

Thats a good shout tbh. I did think of popping it on a high kerb and sending the mrs under. Shes a more likely to fit than me  wish there was a way of knowing  :undecided:

I bought one of those selfie sticks for a couple of quid, and pretty much do the same thing with my phone camera if I need to look under the car. Works a treat

I loved my 034 Dogbone mount when first installed, but one track day and it was all knackered and bent.

I've now got the Racingline lower engine mount kit complete with aluminium torque link as planning power mods next.

NVH at first was terrible, but quieten down massively within the first 200 miles, within a 1000 miles it was almost gone and only really returns if you ride the clutch.

Love the performance, drivetrain and gearbox feel so solid and precise!

I had a dogbone on for about 2 weeks and sold it.  I know people say it dies down but you have to wonder why it does that.  Do other components simply get softer?

In my mind it is not a part that really needs to bed in, if it increases noise and then it goes away after time, another part is taking the strain and weakening.

Anyone got any ideas or concrete theory to counter this?

This arrived from Andy the other day (thanks again) and I fitted it last night. Initial impressions are very good. The change between gears when on / off throttle. Before there was a little jerk sometimes when changing up or down the lower gears but this seems to be done away with now. There is a little added vibration, especially when taking off from a standing start, but I understand this will settle down after a few hundred miles. Overall I'm very pleased with it and think its a worthwhile modification :)

This might be a stupid question, but why wouldn't VW have designed it better if it was such as issue? And Monsta pointed out above, it is a bit concerning where does that tension then get transferred to and would it perhaps weaken other components?

I don't think it's an issue that needs addressing by VW as such, as anything that can be felt during changes is fairly minimal. The stock setup causes no vibrations at all and this is probably more important to 99% of buyers than the additional feel provided by this upgraded version. There are a fair few on the market too. My colleague has had a Revo one fitted to his cupra for several years with no issues.
As for additional strain on other components I can't say, but I would like to think that it would be minimal. The rubber in the orginal bush is still there, so there is still a degree of movement.

They Bed in, the mount settles into place into the rubber. My 034 is silent now, you wouldn't know it was fitted until you put your foot down.
