should i change?
« on: 12 March 2003, 00:07 »
Im thinking of changing my car.At the moment i drive a 205 gti [which is fantastic] but want something a little more comfortable. Is the golf gti more civilised to drive than the 205 ? Im asking because as you may or may not know  the little peugeots are practically undriveable at low speeds due to the delicate throttle set up.Brilliant for back road blasts but rubbish around town.                                                                                        Any comments would be appreciated.

How shall I put it. All Golfs are more civilised than a 205 GTI ;-)

I'm afraid a 205GTi is nothing more than a motorised rollerskate.

With a Golf, you will notice that you are driving a heavier a car, and at lower speeds you could consider it more civilised. GTIs don't perform until they are angry, and until that point, they remain a p'sey cat.

Regards,
Justin

BTW. "psey" had to be abbrieviated. Unfortunately a "male pussy cat" is not a valid statement :-)

the only answer you will get from everyone on this site is that golfs ARE the best.  If you dont believe us then take one for a test drive and you will not look back

The 205 is a better drivers car, and in the right hands can out handle any standard Golf, ( I'm waiting for the death threats, but its true!). But of course in the wrong hands the 205 lets you know your a crap driver by throwing you backwards through the nearest hedge.   The Golf is far better made and is much more civilised, Its a proper car that is just as happy to arse around town stuck in traffic jams, just as much as pushing the bounderys of throttle induced understeer and lift off oversteer on the open road.

Don't get a Mk3 unless its a VR6, but even then don't expect mental performance, its more like a GT than a proper GTI, ( its too damn heavy.) oh, and don't get a white one. (It looks like a portacabin).

Talking from experience here mk3s are better.  I have owned both and my MK3 GTI 8V has out run MK2 GTI 8V so I am not to sure that MK2's are that much quicker.  Possibly just a little bit

Of course you should, i have driven aircooled vdubs all my life and have only recently got a mk2 gti (in white Mo3000 and no it does not look like a portacabin more like a fuel injected bidet actually ;) I think its pretty good, heavy seems to be a good description but waaayyyy more fun than the 205gti i  borrowed off a friend last week.  I would recommend a mk1 tho i think they look the coolest of all the golfs but expensive for wot you get.

;) Do what?!?

The Mk3 is a tank. Drives like tank, looks like a tank, goes like a tank. The Mk3 GTI was nothing more than a rebadged GL. The Mk3GTI 16v was a disgrace.

I have one thing to say about Mk3s - girls car :-)

Justin

I was on about the Mk3 looking like a portacabin, but Bidet is a much better description....... What about one of those pink elephants that you put 10p in for a quick ride? It probably out handles a Mk3......

I might as well add here, My wife has a Mk3 GTI, I have A Mk1 Campaign ( Restoring), And Mk2 GTI 16V as me daily runabout. The Mk2 is by far a better drive than the Heavy weight Mk3. It actually corners, and doesnt get pissed on by lesser machines. I am quite impressed that Stoat's Mk3 can outrun A Mk2 8V. Considering it has the same brake horse, but wieghs 18% more......... Either the Mk2 wasn't trying/Knackered, or Stoat has his own Therory on Physics. You decide.
