IDLING WHEN COLD
« on: 26 April 2003, 19:51 »
HI ALL

WELL IVE GOT A PROBLEM WITH MY 1990 GTI 16v.
WHEN I 1st START IT WHEN COLD, THE REVS DROP DOWN TO ABOUT 500rmp? UNTIL THE CAR HAS WARMED UP, ABOUT 3 MINUTES. I HAVE CHANGED THE STABILIZING VALVE AND I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM.

Is the stabilisation valve a mechanical or electrical device?

The reason i ask is that there is a device in the cabin called something like ICU (Idle Control Unit) which is most definitely an electrical device. Its about the size of two boxes of cigarettes.

If this has broken you will get exactly what you are seeing. The bad news is that it costs 180quid.

The way to test it is simple. Unplug it and see if your car behaves as badly.

Regards,
Justin

Idle Speed Stabilisation Control Unit is its name apparently.

Its in the centre console near the gear stick (i think).

I'm sure its in Haynes as thats where we found it.

Regards,
Justin

BTW. Not sure if this is correct.

On the top of the engine where the throttle presents itself you can do the manual bit and rev the engine, but in its idle position there is a dip switch.

I was told many years ago, that when in this position the engine management unit puts the engine into the idle mode.

However, whilst the engine is cold the idle speed is controlled by this electrical unit that may of broken. Once it comes up to temperarture the little dip switch and EMU take over again.

i had exactly the same problem,

try some of these:

clean all the air pipes
replace air filter if dirty
clean the throttle body with carb cleaner
replace the fuel filter
take out the idle screw and clean it with carb cleaner
clean the hole you took the idle screw out from

after i did this my car idled perfectly at 1000rpm as soon i started it, and still does :)

good luck
