Only got one picture of my Corrado so far which one of my workmates took at E38 so thought i would bung it up for those that didnt see the car at the show. Very standard (and way to high) at the moment but watch this space.....

I only saw 2 other yellow rado's at E38 and there is a poll on the corrado forum about what cloour everyones car is, out of almost 700 replies only 30 (including mine) are yellow. Its either a love it or hate it colour tho really.....

and even rarer are G60's in yellow!
If i see one when i come to buy one, whenever that maybe I will just buy it, coz of the rarity value of them!

Bit of simple yet effective..

one of the guys i work with was trying to convince me to do a black roof and/or bonnet!!

the tinted lights look cool, i have alway liked the continental yellow ones too but think its a bit too yellow on my car!

Title: Re: My new project.....
Post by: golfpro on 14 November 2006, 09:08
I think the first one looks best, all smooth, thoughI think Id put something deep like some wide bbs rs'/rm's and possibly look into coding the centres. The yellow lights did make it a bit too yellow imo and i think theres too much contrast between the yellow and black to do that.
Title: Re: My new project.....
Post by: martinb on 01 February 2007, 17:39
ok so i know i still havent actually done any mods to the Corrado yet (cos i keep having to spend all my money fixing it!!! ) but i keep finding new inspiration:

Title: Re: My new project.....

Right got some new pics!! Ok it does not really look like there has been much progress but there has been loads of stuff fixed that you cannot see (new engine mount, shock, brakes all round, door handle, CV joints, headlight switch and a mot etc etc) but now **touchwood** all is good so (except a squeeky spoiler) may now be able to start doin cool stuff!

Maybe im getting old but recently i have started to think that as its a fairly mint standard car i really dont wanna do that much too it, i was thinking perhaps a set of g60 bbs, possibly with colour coded centres (black or maybe yellow if someone could photoshop it cos not sure if it would look cr@p) or just get the sebrings refurbed and sort those bl00dy centre caps out, lowered, red tint rears and pressed steel/german plates and leave it at that. Views/comments appreciated!

Looking good Martin.

If you like it as is then don't do too much to it, just do a few reversible mods that take your fancy that you can always change back if need be. That's pretty much what I did with my old cab, kept fairly standard apart from an indicator change and a bit of lowering. Yours is iconic as it stands, especially being yellow, so I wouldn't deviate too far from that if it was mine and some refurbed or new wheels will make it look a whole lot fresher anyway and you may not want to do much more.
Title: Re: My new project.....
Post by: golfpro on 06 April 2007, 16:38
lower it first and see how you feel then. If you like how it sits on the wheels that are on it the leave it. Personally I think it needs some bigger, deep dished numbers scrubbing away at the arches. Im not one to worry bout leaving cars standard if its not what you want, do it how you want it to look

ok was getting bored as not had the cash/time to do much recently but have been going to a lot of aircooled shows recently so gettin some influence from there a nice cheap simple mod, maltese cross sticker on the petrol cap, i was not sure i liked it at first but its quite subtle and has grown on me. I really like it now:

Also recently fitted a 76 airiel ball and my pressed dubmeister plates

I have also just fitted a black vw badge on the front which i reckon looks loads better (cheers sam @ hic for that) just waiting for my birthday present 60mm suspension kit from the mrs (as well as the plates) to turn up from dubmeister and then should be slammed in time for inters!!!  more pics soon!

finally got round to sorting the 4x4 like ride height ride height and managed to grap a couple of pics before the heavens opened (hope weather gets better for inters)! Im well chuffed with the look and although i only drove it a couple of miles it feels much better to drive too! Only downside so far is its now near impossible to get too my house due too a near cliff like drop kerb but hey we're moving soon (nothing to do with it...no really!)....

What do you reckon:

overall not too bad but can get a tad bumpy on some of the back roads round my way, bottomed out big time tho after taking a wrong turn down a twisty one track road after inters (feckin sat nav - if i catch who changed the settings.....) busting my exhaust! Still probably not as hard as my mk2 was tho

cheers for the offer, wheels are gonna have to wait though i think as im moving house next month so gonna have no spare cash for a few months (hope i can blag E38 tickets and petrol on company expnses again!!! ) and i gotta replace my exhaust which is completely sh@gged!

on the plus side, cant see any fierce drop kerbs/speed bumps etc where the new house is although they aint finished building the road yet, had nothing too do with the decision to move honest

cheers for all the comments, still well chuffed with the wheels.......just not so chuffed with the car itself right now

I spent all day today getting it prepped for the mot.....fitted other rear caliper (which took so long because they gave one for the wrong side but in the correct box so i didnt notice til it was in bits and was stranded until they sent a van out with the correct one ), new drivers door handle (which i collected monday night after an hours drive each way in thick fog!) etc then driving home from my mates where the caliper was done the water warning light came on. Checked under the bonnet and the water pipe that goes from the right hand side of the block to the heater bypass valve (feed for the heater matrix i think) has split! Apparantly its an obsolete part which is no longer available from vw so another day off work tomorrow going to breakers etc to try and get one!! , anyone know if they are the same as on a mk2 16v as its the same engine?

Then mot on friday....it had better bl**dy pass!!!!!!!!!

cheers mate, nah i like the black strip and anyway if i took it of i would probably be left with a stripe in a slightly different shade of yellow cos although (bar the mirrors) it does not look that faded the yellow fades almost as bad as the red ones for fading!

WOOO, passed the MOT, only advise was rear suspension bushes!

Also took a trip to Stevens VW breakers (coulda spent hours poking around the parts/cars breaking there, very helpfull too! ) today to get the split pipe i needed to fix the water leak, gave the guy a couple of extra quid to leave the heater bypass valve on the pipe i was buying and then changed the pipe and heater bypass valve for the ones on mine and have not only fixed the water leak but have nice toasty working heaters again for the first time in about 2 years!!!!  (only regret not having done it sooner rather than freezing my @rse off for all that time!!  ).

Not much more i wanna do to it now, happy with the way it looks although still plan to have a go at tinting the rear lights, probably all red but got a spare set to experiment on....then start trying to make it go faster.......

Yea teledials have always been a favourite of mine. I have a feeling they are 5x130.

You could experiment with them and paint the centres black, seeing as though they would be winter wheels.

Title: Re: My Rado.....engine swap underway!
Post by: martinb on 31 July 2008, 22:49
not updated this for a while!

anyway, my head gasket went, didnt think it was worth chucking money at an engine that has done nearly 200k now so sourced a new engine that a mate built for his mk2 before changing his mind and dropping a VR6 lump n. The spec is as follows:

2ltr 16v ABF bottom end from a mk3 16v gti 'long throw' engine - supplied by Stevens VW about 2yrs ago and informed it was a good low mileage engine, standard internals,
painted silver

1.8 16v original head
ported inlet and exhaust openings to gasket size and welds smoothed
Skimmed
All valves removed, de-coked and replaced. Guides fine so not messed with
New Head Gasket fitted
comes with new head gasket set
New head bolts fitted - not torqued up yet
Cams - has 2exhaust cams - supposed to be a good power upgrade due to increased lift, need toqueing up
standard tappets
comes with chrome affect rocker cover and mildly polished 50mm inlet manifold

020 16v box as original - good synchromesh with none of the usual 1st-2nd gear faults
also painted silver and bolted to the bottom end ready to go
new clutch and assembly - also from Stevens VW

comes with all main ancillaries - starter, alternator, k-jet injection system, mfa, hoses etc etc
mk2 16v subframe comes with the engine if required

all of the above for £350 which having looked in the various classifieds looks a good price.

I trust the person who has the engine that its good (seeing his stunning mk2 VR is enough to convince me he doesnt cut corners as the engine was intended for that before he changed his mind and out the vr in) and its even in my village so no hassles collecting it.

So started the engine swap today, will have to use the original gear box outta my car for the time being though:

not up dated in here for a while so thought i would finish the stort of what happened next.....

new lump in.....

almost time to give it a try

starting to look like a car again!

Right up until this point things seemed like they where going fairly well......

then came the big moment.....it was time to try and start it!

What an anti climax, it would not go, i did not really expect it to start 1st time but after flattening the battery on the Rado, my g/f's mk2 gti and my mates van still with no joy i was starting to worry.....the next couple of days where spent going over everything checking it had fuel, it had sprk, checking the timing where all spot on but it still would not go!

Had several people look at it and all agreed there was no reason it would not run, the guy i bought the engine was/is adament that it should be good (although had never had it running himself). As a last resort we attatched the tow rope and pulled the car up the road to see if we could bump it into life! Bingo....it was finally running but all was still not well.

It would not tick over, was blowing clouds of smoke, sounded terrible and was very flat and would not rev up. Once we turned it off we where back to square one....it would not start again and i bit of poking around the engine bay soon revealed everything was far from right with the engine. It had filled the airbox full of oil and after draining the oil found that to be full of water

Title: Re: My Rado.....engine swap underway!
Post by: martinb on 13 December 2008, 13:30
by now i really needed the car back. The mrs was getting fed up with me constantly stealing her car and E38 was fast approaching so we decided that the quickest and easist way to get the car back on the road would be find another engine out of a running car that was known to be good (lesson learnt there!). Mik at MV develpments came to the rescue (thanks mate) with a complete running ABF lump for only £100.

An afternoons work had the engine out again and after Steve/caddyman had picked up the new engine for me we started again! Luckily with such highly skilled helpers (well actually really Steve did the vast majority of the work   ) and my boy Alex the new 2ltr 16v ABF went in really easily

we fitted a brand new clutch along the way as mine was shot and the gearbox/clutch we got with the last engine would not fit, and by the afternoon that day we where ready to try and start it again!
Title: Re: My Rado.....engine swap underway!
Post by: martinb on 13 December 2008, 13:32
i was totally Cr@pping myself when the moment came to turn the key again but this time it fired up pretty much first time!!!!!!!!!!

I had a few minor issues to sort with a few flashing warning lights/buzzers but after some helpful advice from Rubjonny these where soon sorted.

So thats pretty much where im up too now. The ABF is sooo much better than my old fairly tired KR lump. There are still a couple of minor things i need to sort - Starter motor keeps sticking on & think i need to get the camber/tracking checked as the steering wheel is on the p!ss now but it was straight before. Also where we had the front off and the bonnet catch etc (cos i snapped the cable) the bonnet does not quite shut down right so left with slightly iffy looking panel gaps which really bugs me but should be easy enough to sort!

Oh and i still want to strip down the 1st engine i bought to try and figure out what was wrong with it (and perhaps get some money back although there are a lot of bits i did use or want too keep and i made a bit back by selling the gearbox seperatly)! but its kinda out of sight out of mind at the back of the shed now the car is on the road - will definatly do it at some point and then probably put the head/cams on at some point in the future.

anyway couple of more recent pics:

and then after all that work and only enjoying the abf for a couple of months I reluctantly gave in to the need for a more sensible family car and because the sale of our mk2 would not raise enough funds to buy the sort of thing we wanted so the Corrado was put up for sale but eventually swapped for something a bit newer/more sensible:

Although i really miss the Corrado im am quite enjoying the Bora (especially heaters that actually blow HOT air, leccy windows that DONT take 5mins to go up, and not having to clean it every other day cos its not bright yellow! ).

Since i have got it i've changed the de-badged grill for a standard one as i wasnt keen on the de-badge one and will probably eventually change the wheels as not too keen on the A8's either.

Sad times, always loved your Rado. Bora is a good car though. My Dad rates both his TDI Bora's as amongst the best cars he's ever had. High Praise from a man who's had a lotus elan, a MKI lotus Cortina, an Alfasud, a Saab 900 Turbo Carlson and a lowered and tuned MKIII VR!

Rather than start a new thread, I thought I would revive this one! I quickly got bored of the Bora, which made way for a 3dr mk2 oak green gti that kept me happy for a bit until last winter I decided to try something more "modern" again and got an A3 T Sport. With a remap that T sport was very quick but no real character. I had regretted getting rid of my Rado since about 10mins after it went so when a friend said he was getting rid of his, I could not resist! He had always liked my A3 so a deal was struck and this is the result:

when I first got it:

after sorting a few issues such as the tracking being way out and ruined front tyres, I got shot of the bonnet bra and changed the badgeless grille for a proper 'rado early 7 slat grille with 16v badge. Also found some Brock centre caps on Ebay.

The tatty interior bugged me so replaced the worn steering wheel with a 3 spoke leather one from a vr6, fitted an original gear knob to replace the pool ball that was fitted and changed the front seat for some Corrado half leather seats in the same pattern - these look factory and I have been told they could be from one of the original Corrado press cars which came with half leather.

before:

after:

These are the most recent pics I have:

Also have a VR6 lump waiting to drop in once I have collected all the bits I need...

Yay another one! Looks tidy too! I looked at a nugget and a red one in my search. Nugget had been blown over but was done very poorly, no windows out or door jams, and no/very little attempt at cutting in the new paint as well as rough running and no centre exhaust. Red one had lots of faded areas and was over priced IMO. Glad you got a deal for another characterful car though! What are future plans if any?

cheers for the comments

Yay another one! Looks tidy too! I looked at a nugget and a red one in my search. Nugget had been blown over but was done very poorly, no windows out or door jams, and no/very little attempt at cutting in the new paint as well as rough running and no centre exhaust. Red one had lots of faded areas and was over priced IMO. Glad you got a deal for another characterful car though! What are future plans if any?

honestly, the paint is not great as has faded in places but I was so desperate for another Rado I can forgive many of its faults - its no show car but I just love the way they look and drive. Not !00% certain how things will move on with the red one yet, whether I will fit the VR engine I have or the car will make way for a tidier factory VR in the future6.....

Where's this been hiding!

Which one? The red one...not much, I have raised the coilovers at the rear and am much happier with the way it drives / looks (must be getting old!). The yellow one? I have no idea but would love to know! should never have got rid

I was referring to this thread in general, it's been hiding for ages until recently... Are we going to be expecting any more updates in the near future then?

I had a seperate thread on here for my oakie but thought I would revive this thread rather than start a new one when i got another Rado

nothing much of any interest to update at the moment, removed the HID's (back to candle power) and raised the coilovers.

Couple of snow pics from last month
