engine oil 0w-20 vs 5w30
« on: 22 August 2018, 14:51 »
the new, low viscosity 0w20 is compatible with vw 508 00 while the older 5w-30 is compatible with vw 504 00.  The new Golf takes both, though 0w 20 is apparently the 1st recommendation.  Using the 5w30 doesn't mention any downside except higher emissions.

Anyone with specialized knowledge on the above choice?  I can easily get my hands on the 5w30 but to use the newer oil i'd need to take the car to the stealers which i never do.
Wife's: mk8 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr atlantic blue, DSG, Norfolk 17", pan s/r, leds
Now: mk7.5 TSI 1.4 RL, 5dr tornado red, DSG, Singapore 17", pan s/r, leds
Before: mk6 GTI 5dr candy white, DSG, Monza Shadow 18", s/r, bi-Xenons, DCC
Even before that: mk5 GT 5dr tornado red, manual, s/r

i enquired at halfords, and their system recommended 5w-30, but then changed their minds to suggest going by the sticker under the bonnet, so i topped up with 0w-20 with is first choice, 5w-30 is readily available, but halfords sell 0w-20 anyway.
