Had a bit of a run in with a badger last night.
Anyone know roughly how much to replace the bumper, fog light, wheel arch lining and undertray?
Trying to weigh up claiming on insurance or just paying for it myself.

Ouch...

Isn't this the whole point of insurance?
-
Yeah but with a £500 excess it’s always worth seeing if it’s cheaper to pay for it myself.
I can’t imagine that lot will come in under £500 though.
-
It’s a weighing up job when It comes to insurance. I’ve been in insurance for 15 years although not really dealt with the car side of things for last couple of years. ‘Technically’ you’re meant to tell an insurance company of any accidents regardless of wether a claim has been made, but realistically who will do that? Tally up the total cost so excess, + effect on insurance for a fault claim for not only your own vehicle but any your named as a driver on the insurance for 3 years. Best way to do this is to do a quote online using your own details without a claim and then another with same details but as Joe Bloggs or summit slightly different postcode etc (due to insurers exchanging info you don’t want them digging) with a fault claim. Bit of a farce I know but only way to weigh up the costs.
-
Still probably cheaper to get it done yourself and not have that on your insurance record.
You'll be paying the 500 excess and then they'll up your premiums for at least 5 years. Plus when they put that through their "approved" repairer the bill will be eye watering and far more than getting a good local guy to do it for you.
Sounds illogical but there you go.

Shame the badger was not lodged in the hole as might have made it look ok with it being colour coded black and white....

A few years ago I had a rear bumper replaced by VW on a MK7 Golf (just a normal Match Edition). Total bill for the new rear bumper, spraying (limestone grey), parking sensors, number plate, sundries, fitment etc was £980. So given the things needed for your bumper I think it's safe to say it's easily going to be a £1000+ job.
-
The insurer's repairers will go to town - buying OEM VW parts, no reusing anything. I'd imagine just the parts bill will be more than 1k, then add spraying and labour...
Plus you'll be paying the "kickback" that the repairers have to pay the insurance company.
Its a rotten old game.
Someone more sympathetic might use scrapyard parts and only replace what is broken, reusing as much as possible.

£500 excess!!!
-
I would say if done at VW you are talking at more than £2k. New bumper plus paint and fitting alone will be £1K+ then the lights and rest of the panels under. I would go insurance unless you know a good body repair specialist.

I’d be inclined to agree to be honest, you’ll have plenty of come back going through the insurers as well if a year down the line the repair isn’t satisfactory.

£500 excess!!!
Personally I can't see the point of insurance if you are going to have to pay that much yourself... unless of course that's compulsory excess due to high risk... eg a young driver...
-
£500 excess!!!
Most companies like to stick a juicy compulsory excess on as soon as you dare utter the word gti, then by the time you stick a voluntary on to help with the price a little your left with the dilemma.

A pheasant caved the front of my GTi in 18 months ago and the bill was 1200 quid. Luckily my main bumper was ok but looking at that picture you need an entire bumper as it's smashed.

Poor badger
-
That might polish out?
-
I make my excess as high as possible because in my view I don't think it's worth claiming unless the claim is going to be substantial - I think my excess is £800 and I probably wouldn't claim for any damage less than £1.5-2k
-
Poor badger
Unless he shrugged it off (they are tough bastards), at least he will have been genuine road kill, not like the ones that have died of lead poisoning, then dumped on the side of the road out of the back of a Landrover in the middle of the night.
-
It most definitely didn’t shrug it off considering it went under both left wheels and made the car jump! I’ll spare you the dash cam video.
Made me feel sick to be honest. Would have stopped to check if the poor thing needed putting out it’s misery but it’s very dangerous road.
The excess is quite a lot but as others have said the logic is that any repair under £500 I wouldn’t bother paying for on insurance anyway.
Decided to go down the insurance route. There’s quite a lot of broken internal components so don’t want to risk an enormous private bill.
-
Insurance companies view you more of a risk if you have a really low excess as it means you're more likely to claim for piddly little things. 500 excess is about the right balance to get a decent price.
-
That depends on circumstances. Both my Amarok and Tig policies have the compulsory £150 excess only and the premiums are less that £250. My Golf is on a classic policy which costs peanuts, so doesn't count.
-
That's just a general classification that all insurance companies view people.
