Title: I have bought a Mk2 8v GTI today! Its a project car with a few faults
Post by: chocice on 10 May 2014, 23:53
Hi Guys,

I have bought an unmolested GTI from the original owner, its all as it left the factory apart from a new head unit but I have the original as well included in the sale.

Its been stored since December so today was the first drive it had in months.

(http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb410/joncbloomfield/side4.jpg) (http://s1204.photobucket.com/user/joncbloomfield/media/side4.jpg.html)

(http://i1204.photobucket.com/albums/bb410/joncbloomfield/side3.jpg) (http://s1204.photobucket.com/user/joncbloomfield/media/side3.jpg.html)

I like the colour is it oak green? what are your guys opinions on the alloys?

It drives really well I loved every second of the drive home.

Bad bits on the car:

Rust on the sills, boot lid, scabs on drivers door, previous welding work for MOT'S, drivers door seal rotten, reverse lights not working, glove box jammed shut, drivers seat work to death, creaking from steering column. any advice on resolving these niggles greatly appreciated.

oh and is this normal?

to me it looks like it should be sealed but there is a gap.

anyhow overall im overjoyed to have a mk2 Golf and join the club.

Is the glovebox locked? For the reverse light check the obvious first; bulbs, wiring and cluster, then the switch on the gearbx. Does the driver's sect rock? Is then replace the guides on the runners: http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Seat-rail-guide-outer-Mk1-2-Golf-Scirocco-Jetta-T1-Beetle-171881213B_act_shop.product_pID_16379847.htm?crumbStartPage=1&crumbStartRow=1 and http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Seat-rail-guide-inner-white-plastic-Golf-Scirocco-MK1-2-191881213_act_shop.product_pID_48416895.htm?crumbStartPage=1&crumbStartRow=1

Yes the lid is locked turning the key in it gets you no where.

I have checked the bulbs wiring and cluster so it must be the switch I'm guessing it's under the car.

It was a typo I was supposed to say worn to death it's the bolster which I believe is very common and ill just have to hope a good one pops up nearby. The seat does not rock.

Today has been great I have spent the whole day driving about. Had a bloke come upto me and say how nice it was at the petrol station.

I have noticed a few more rust areas namely the filler cap and more on the rear of the car as well as spots of visible rust on the arches and sills I hadn't seen before. Also a bit on the car body on the passenger door hinge It's also dripping oil onto the floor which it hadn't done in storage or I would have spotted it.

The window rattles about but I can't see why and the drivers door card was taped on so it also rattles.

So I'm thinking what do I take on first at this point I'm thinking wire brush sand paper and krust then filler on the spots I can get to before going to a body shop for an estimate on new seals. Getting some bits from the Internet and fix up the easy bits.

I tried touching the 2 wires together on the switch but no joy.

Can you squeeze the two ends of the glovebox lock when unlocked?

Post by: chocice on 11 May 2014, 17:52
No I can't it's jammed.  I can see myself drilling the lock out to be honest. Which would be a shame as I would like one key to lock and unlock everything in the car.

So it's no actually unlocking then. Problem with the lock, rather than a jam.

The key goes round and round in the Barrol and the 2 bits you squeeze together are stuck you can't physically squeeze them together.

I have managed to get the glove box open, the catch/ lock is totalled, the stays on either side are broken so the lid just flops down should be interesting trying to get a new lock, I think ill try and repair the stays as the condition of the lid is cosmetically sound.

Looks like you have the ''campaign'' model, special edition, and the wheels look to be the original Le castelets.
You should have rainbow trim seats as well.
Oh, and it should have the black VW grill badge also

Yes that's right its the campaign model are there many of these about these days in original condition, I hadn't seen one before, although I wasn't really looking tbh. I expected it to have more then 2 speakers but it looks like there are 2 speakers in the back and where the door speakers should be there are little cubby draws instead? seems a bit mean on a GTI.

Post by: oakgreener on 12 May 2014, 11:36
There are two speakers in the rear parcel supports and two in the grills left and right of the dash, up by the windscreen. I had an ''88 mk2 that had the cubby holes in the door pockets, my ''91 run out model has speakers.
Here's a thread on mk2 campaigns...........

I thought I had the original stereo but I have a Blaupunkt Paris could this have still been an original radio?

Should it have had black badges on the front and back? how come some cars have the silver badges and some have black?

Finally got round to taking it to my local mechanics to have a good look and it looks like all that welding that was supposed to have been done is just bloody filler and the new sills are the original sills with black tape going across them. Well at least I can get a proper job done now.

Hi guys,

Just a little update about, managed to fix the glove box, wire in the original radio which is awesome, all the carpets and seats out as well as door cards and it's not rotten yay! I figured I would mop the car and it's looking amazing.  It's currently having the entire underside scraped clean and re sealed as well as new door sills, the only issue on this car was a poor rust repair job around the jacking point where filler was used, although looking at the £700 receipt from 2009 it states rear of car stripped sand blasted and new jacking point welded to replace corroded area, but the guy at the garage showed me a little nuben of a jacking point with filler shaped around it. You just can't trust some garages.

Original stereo's varied - Blaupunkts, Panasonics and even Sony's were fitted.

Looks like a really nice find mate, oak green with small bumpers you don't see many of them about so be sure to keep it that way.

Wouldn't be any harm dropping it a few mm  haha

Thanks to Jezza for supplying the seat I can now sign off the interior as fully restored, this forum has been superb, I have fixed the glove box, sorted the gear linkage, fixed the on-board computer, changed a seat, wired a stereo, replaced all the old crappy rubber on the doors, fixed the window regulator, fibre glassed the rear of the door cards and installed a water tight membrane, replaced Reverse light switch, vacuum seal repair (what a difference that made), windscreen washer replacement, replaced the faulty Clifford alarm dash control, fixed the central locking all of which I did with posts and advice and mainly photos from this forum.

yes pretty rare, I've had mine since new 1987, stored for 18 years in my garage with 80,000 miles.

need to get my finger out and get her back on the road

ps the oak green is lovely,  classic,  and also the small bumpers.
