Coming from an E92 330d, I was also worried about mpg. Happy to say my mk7.5 GTI is pretty good. My 6 mile commute to work gets 36-38 mpg and a 400 mile round trip to Reading and back with cc set at 68mph I got 47 mpg. Not bad for a 230bhp petrol 😎

Thanks for all the latest replies folks - all really helpful.
'Wolly440' which version of the GTI do you have? PP? DSG? etc. Your comments are reassuring as you have made a similar switch to the one I am thinking of
My overall mileage is pretty low at present and mid to late 30's mpg seems acceptable to me, but having driven performance diesels for the last 15 or so years with both strong performance and economy - I would baulk at moving to regular mpg in the 20's

Mine is just a standard gti manual, only done 700 miles, not given it a good blast yet, has plenty of low down torque so can still be driven like a lazy diesel.

I don't think with CC set at 68mph that you'd be using many of the 230 horses!!!

Many thanks for the replies so far guys - very helpful.
To answer the question from 'Watts' and be a little more specific - my short journeys would be around 5 miles in length and a mix of fairly heavy stop start traffic and fastish flowing B roads.
Cheers

My 245 DSG just hit 3k since it arrived at start of June. My daily commute is about 6 miles each way in a lots of stop start traffic and hills. Most days I struggle to get much over 25mpg on way in and around 20 on way home... (its more uphill and stationary traffic when I leave work).

Did around a 200 mile trip last week, lot of which was on the M1 and averaged 40 for the whole trip - sat around 75-80 on the motorway parts.

It completely depends on the roads, the traffic and how you apply your right foot. If you are stop start in traffic you aren't going to be hitting over 30 mpg. As has been said before, if you are really concerned about mpg, best opting for the GTD.

Just for a comparison my manual 7.5 PP does 25-30mpg on a normal trip to work (15 miles on the motor way).

Have done a few long journeys to Cornwall and back (around 300 miles) recently and managed to get around 40-42mpg out of it without really trying.
