engine movement?
« on: 29 September 2007, 21:55 »
I got a vr6 a few weeks ago.
when i bought the car i thought one of the engine
mounts had gone. because when driving and holding
the gear lever you can feel it move.
on my mk2 it was a gearbox mount.
but the vr is cable change?
and ive replaced all 3 mounts 2 engine and 1 gearbox

try and rock the engine and see if it moves more in 1 direction.... if it's solid (and you can not spot any mount movement) it's not a mount problem and if you give more details on when you can feel it (when changing gear, coming off the clutch etc)

when your driving along and accelerate the gear lever moves
back. let off it move forwards? it happens in all gears?
the gear change isnt as good a my mk2 valver (after i replaced the bushings)
im thing about replacing the one week old gearbox mount with a solid one.
but not sure if this is the problem.  :undecided:

i'd be interested in hearing about a cause, a I have exactly the same problem.
The gear stick kind of wobbles when your driving .. i think maybe low revs more so?
But yep, accelerate goes back and when you let off, it jumps forward a little (not out of gear though)

If you rest your hand on the gear stick whilst driving, you can feel the "chug" of the engine.

BTW : Mine's an 8v gti J reg

I have a feeling this is a problem on the linkages and not a mount (as these have being replaced!).. if it's cable operated the bushes are similar to a mk2's and there is a ball on the bottom of the gearlever that can break and it could cause this problem..
there's a guide in the mk2 section on replacing the bushes and linkages. could be worth having a look

ive got simialr, ive justv replaced the struts, shocks and all 3 mounts on my VR, but there is movement, especially in reverse, i think its the wishbones as these are common failures.. just a shame the front bolt is seized on at the moment .. airgun time !  they are great cars though, what a sound eh ?

Mine does it too, there is no repair kit available for the cable change box. I tried repairing the lever mechanism with all new bushes but it made no difference. I have new engine mounts and a new gearbox mount. I also have powerflex subframe bushes. Still the same problem though. Although an annoying problem it's not top of my things to do list at the moment. I daresay i'll end up with new cables for the shift mechanism as i'm guessing these will have been stretched in the past by some furious gear changing
