well today was a stunning day in the sun, absolutely roasting working on the car.

took apart all the gearshift linkages and cleaned them down with degunk. replaced all the bushes and the two selector rods.

gotta change the gearbox oil in the morning and do the fiddly job of the shift rod adjustment but then yay i'll have a sweet gearchange again. i'm hoping this will sort my crunching in 2nd gear) the clutch is absolutely sweet and doesnt slip so im guessing it may be a worn syncro in 2nd.

hopefully ill get the shift rod adjustment done before 12ish so i can go help dublass check  out her new car.

Gotta order a sony stereo lead because i seem to have lost the ******* thing. Got round to wiring up the speakers and stereo power wiring and stuff only to found i lost it, meh! well i spose another few days of driving without a stereo wont hurt, already managed with on since errr february in both my golfs! they sound sweet enough anyway.

more stuff needs doing but im bored of typing now will get some pics up tomorrow woop

managed to sort the gear selector rod, what a feckin mission, especially when you have hayfever and a sneezing fit and end up headbutting the sump! owwww.

cant seem to find the fill port for the gearbox oil so thats a mission ive given up on. will re-attempt when my brakes come later on in the week and i change them

also twitted my head off the bleed nipple crawling out from under the car so my neighbours heard me shout "****in nipples" about 20 times hahaha

definatly a job for two people is the shift selector rod alignment!

anyway time to grab some lunch and go round me mates, innabit

wheeeeeeeee

WHY oh WHY do people always advertise the best stuff stupidly cheap on late late sunday evening...

ive been tempted by a 90amp upgraded alternator for running the sub, also bought myself a new dual voice coil sub to make way for the old dvc sub i blew up.

got myself some carbon door cards with pods fitted hopefully in the next couple of weeks

and my best find yet, hopefully i can go pick these up on saturday, some rather tasty lorber 5 spoke deep dish rims...

been after a set like these for ages...

what do you reckon, black with a polished dish, or fully polished?

wooo new presents...

stereo lead, 280mm brakes and subwoofer have arrived...

stereo is already hooked up now and i have tunage again... first time ive had tunes in a car since i sold the G40 back in february... didnt need it then tho as the G was music to my ears!

the new subwoofer is a 12 inch, so ive got to get a jigsaw blade and enlarge the hole in my 10 inch sub enclosure. once this is done i can mount the sub in the back behind the front seats and the amp in the spare boot well.

the carbon door cards will be here in a month or so, so im on the lookout for some cheap decent components :)

tomorrows plans are to :-

finish work
go to boardmans garage and get a full mk2 rear disc conversion with rear brake bias valve of a mates old valver in the yard.
will try and see if i can rob the servo off it too... then its off to gsf to pick up 2 brake hoses, 16v rocco handy-b cable and a passat 4 port master cylinder...

saturdays job is a bit of a mini mission

remove old hubs
fit new ball joints
fit 280mm brakes
plum braided hoses
drop rear axle
fit rear braided hoses
fit brake bias valve
remove old drums and stub axles
fit new stub axles and disc brakes
fit new rear wheel bearings
fit servo & master cylinder
fill and bleed brakes

go for a test drive, (no heavy brakes for a good 200 miles to let the pads bed in)

sit back and smoke a fat spliff

sunday :-
cut new subwoofer hole in sub box
fit subwoofer
fit enclosure in car
fit amp in car
pull up carpets and wire in.

and that hopefully should be my weekend in a nutshell

i also found a guy that will rebuild my engine for 60 quid so that will save me **** loads of time,

gotta take a trip to brum to go pick up the alloys in the week

oh fitted the strut brace
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b12/yousafn/DSC00082-1.jpg)
you can see the new brakes here, but i cant decide on which brace to keep Arghhhh!

Right up...

Friday -

Went down to find out about the 16v servo, can get it for 25 quid and a new passat master cylinder from a 87-92 16v model for 35 quid, ill wait till inters for these as im running light off cash...

oil cooler arrived today, its a sexy piece of work if i do say so meself...

the rear disc conversion is on hold until i get the servo and mc done... the extra pressue needed to run bigger pistons means theres alot more pedal travel so i dont wnat to increase that with rear calipers too...

saturday -

meant to wake up at 9, woke up at half 2 hahahaha, all i did today was cut a subwoofer hole to accept the 12 inch sub and fit it in the box... laziness oh also started to polish up the 4 branch manfold, its coming up mint!

went a houseparty later on, took far too many pre-rolled joints and a mahoosive bottle of southern comfort, which i drank nearly all of it and proceeded to go lie outside, chunder **** loads and went and passed out in the car! woke up at half 7 very uncomfy and hungover as ****!

sunday -

despite going to bed at half 7 i woke up at 11 reasonably refreshed.

mounted my amp in the spare boot well and sub behind the drivers seat. wired in the rcas, power, ground and amp remote and some new fuse holders...

need to get a wire brush on my earthing point as its a tad rusty, ive also got to change the sealing around the passenger side taillight as its letting water in...

went over to my mates lockup where i procedeed to take off teh old hubs and 239mm brakes...

fitted the new hubs with 280mm brakes on, plugged in all the braided hoses and bled the brakes...

they look amazing but the pedal travel is enormous (due to the larger piston size and still with the 19mm master cylnder and 8v sevo), ill sort this in the week after inters (or possibly this week if i sell me red golf)

didnt fit new ball joints as i couldnt get hold of the m6 bolts and nuts needed but the two new wheel bearings in the hubs have worked wonders...

managed to get meself a nice radiator slam panel metal cover which im gonna polish up, and 2 plastic covers that sit either side of the drivers window, these are pretty rare i think and once ive blackend them up will look the nuts!

ill take some pics of these tomorrow, oh also sorted my camber and tracking, shes rocking 1 degree either side, a bit much it should be 0.5 but ill wait till i get my new alloys with lower profile tyres...

oh it was ****in scary driving back in the insano rain, aquaplaning like a mother****er all over the place

oh and my f**kin pressed plates keep falling off, i wish we got sent the sticky pads by hte company, both plates fell off in town and i didnt notice till i got till the garage, i had to cruise around town trying to find them, theyve all got scratched and the chrome holders are ****ed!

not impressed but mehhh, also like currie said the yellow and white covers ont he plates come off pretty easy, no wonders yours was messed up in the post...

gotta get some ****ty decent sticky ******* pads tomorrow and hope the plates dont fall off agani, well surprised i didnt get stopped by police and noone flashed or even told me i had no plates on as i was driving around, id be going pure mental if i saw someone rolling with no plates

anyway glad to have big brakes and a sub and stereo again... all in all a productive weekend  :D woop

Driving back from work today, just come off the motorway onto a dual carrigeway about 2 minutes from home when the sound of a bolt twitting some metal happens and an almighty knocking happens, so i pull over calmly into the bus stop without braking as i only doing about 20mph when this happened. Once i got into the bus stop the o/s wheel was seized up to **** and the car just stopped straight away

jacked up the wheel to find to my dismay that one of the caliper extension bracket bolts had either come loose or sheered out of the mounting and my caliper was hanging by only one bolt.

it had essentially cheesewedged itself against the brake disc and my alloy wheel :( busting the bleed nipple in the process and scratching up the nice new calipers.

i tried to find the bolt in vain, but i managed to take some pictures, you can see the missing bolt, and the bolt thats holding the bracket to the caliper is also coming losoe.

These bolts were torque wrenched tight when fitted to the car but needed no real tightening as they were proper tight out of the box.

I either suspect that they were hi-tensile bolts used or they werent held in with loctite when originally fitted by the company who sold them to me, surely these bolts shouldn't come loose and disappear completely after only 40 miles of driving.

I'm not impressed in the slightest and the fact that after only 40 miles this has happened, how the hell am i meant to put my faith in these brackets indefinatly, as i had planned on keeping these on the car for as long as she lived. I mean imagine if that had happened round a roundabout or when i was doing an emergency stop.

anyone else had similar problems, or are you still running your 280mm brakes years on with no problems?

I wonder how many people are going to whip their wheels off in the morning and check how tight the bolts are!

yay...

right some updates

brakes - guy is sending me 8 new bolts, a new drivers side caliper and some threadlock (should have done it in the first place) all free of charge. (damn ****ing straight)

carbon door cards should be arriving next week, yaaaay well excited bout them.

got some other bits im picking up this weekend

samco hoses, single wiper mech, brand new uprated engine and gearbox mounts, cant remember what else matt has in store for me :)

ohhh yeh ordered a full gear linkage set from missinglinks...

gonne be **** hot, short shift kit with weighted shift rod, new bearings and bushes made of teflon mmmm, proper heat resitant

also all the rods are adjustable which means i can adjust the shift rod selector gap from the engine bay without having to **** about under the car... trust me this is a VERY good thing

will get some pics when it all arrives...

as for tonight im gonna do some pikey engineering to get my car on the drive, cable tie to hold the bracket to the hub, just so my caliper doesnt rub against the wheel (this is causing it to seize) wanna get it on the drive to do the work on her and currently the car is blocking my next door neighbours drive (even tho i told the twitty recovery **** to drop it outside mine and leave her drive unblocked...

when he came to recover the car too, he went to my house, phones me up and says where are you... im like im not at my ****ing house you ****, thats where im going!!!!!!!!! he got confused by my other red golf with a completely different registration... you pay peanuts, you get monkeys...

Ordered a couple of new things -

Set of wheel arches
new boot seal
new rear bumper clips

update:

today and yesterday i was battling it out in the rain and ive got some bits and pieces done in the quest to fix my 2nd gear crunch and intermittant engine cutting out and the loss of wipers... hmm not much then!

Well,

Fitted a

MissingLinkz Full Short Shift kit, consisting of 2 adjustable metal selector rods, weighted shift rod, new relay shaft bearings, new shift road bearing and reduced the gearthrow by about 30 percent. would be 50 but the short shift adapator is too long :( and was fouling the engine or gearbox, either way it was a no go.

changed the gearbox oil which has ailed that fabled 2nd gear crunch, need to take it on a good drive and let it all warm up to see if im still having any other problems as the syncros might be worn...

changed engine oil, filter and ignition coil, retarded ignition timing by a coupla degrees and she seems alot perkier now :)

my new tyres came yesterday too, so they are going on my lorber deep dish wheels tomorrow, (took them down today but the boss was about at the garage so my mate told me to come back in the morning ;) )

mmm 195/45 eagle f1's
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b12/yousafn/DSC00146-1.jpg)

and the wheels

got my tinting spray too so going to do my rears when the rain gives up for a day, put the oem ones back on and im thinking all reds would look good... but then again ive just gone an ordered some mk5 style citigolf lights from south africa, they are the MUTTS NUTTS

also spent a good hour working out what every relay does in my spare parts box and what each relay did on my fusebox, then i noticed that nearly all of them were the wrong relays in there, so switched them all round and im almost set...

got the wipers, fuel pump relay, indicators, brake lights etc working. next mission is to tackle the fan blower and find out why that isnt working!

heres the fusebox before its more here for a reference point

woo productive day i think so wooo

my other engine is also meeting its maker, thanks for jezza in the white passion wagon :D respect, so wont be too long before thats all ready to get dropped in.

argh another feckin misssssssion!!!!!!!!

Right well suffered a few set back this weekend :(

N/S wheel bearing stuff it again :-(

New Wheels have had tyres put on them but are catching against the front calipers so require 5mm/10mm spacers.

So...

the car is going into the garage this week to have the following done because i now cant be arsed any more...

New Outer CV Joint
2 x New Tie Rod Arms
2 x New Tie Rod Ends
2 x balljoints
New Polybush Steering Rack Mounts.

All parts are going to be supplied for them so its just a case of getting a couple of quotes on the cost of labour.

Also got a few more parts coming this week for some further jobs

Retrofit AeroBlades
H4 100w Bright White Bulbs
Upgraded Headlight Wiring Loom
Longer Wheel Bolts & 10mm Spacers
300mm Steering Wheel

The legal allowed value for headlights is apparently 55w or NOT to dazzle other drivers, its kinda hazy so im gonna fit 100watters and tint the headlights, this will sufficiently reduce output but with the higher output of the bulb and upgraded wiring loom will still produce sufficiently brighter light than std.

Also the need for decent wiper blades and the fact i now found retro fit aeroblades for super cheap mean im going for them, all i need now is a mk2 wiper motor to dessimate and fit into my mk1 wiper motor casing.

gimme a ****ty day without rain too so i can tint me fooking lights!!!

also even crapper news, the engine i was due to rebuild isnt going to happen now as so many little parts are missing from it its going to uneconomical to rebuild, therefore my best best is to get a 1.8 8v bottom end and stick the head on that... however its just more sensible to put a 16v beasty in there and sell the p+p head and all the other goodies on fleabay

****in cars man one nightmare after another :(

some pics when the wheel bearings broke, you can see the new wheels, i need to mask off the tyres and do a couple of touch ups on the edges of the rims, but apart from that im happy with em, big dish and fresh mea

also managed to tint the rears today when i found a shock horror hour without rain in manchester

little update,

fitted the tinted rears today, the drivers side one needs to be a bit darker, light is shining through perfectly on both but will get higher output bulbs anyway.

New H4 Brilliant white bulbs came today, tinted the front headlights, they are higher wattage so should still give sufficient amounts of light despite the tinted lenses.

also picked up from a headlight wiring loom, a simple piece of electronics i could have made myself but im damn lazy! takes a direct feed from the battery for the headlight loom with two relays and fuses and a feed from one of the old headlight sources to turn the relays on. this will allow me to run the higher voltage bulbs without burning out any wires as the older ones are 26 years old and made for very low currents. its a worthwhile upgrade even if your not going to uprate the existing bulbs.

ill be fitting them and the front lights on monday.

fitted me new 300mm wheel, looking tasty :-)

you can see me carbon door cards n components in too yum

also got a new breaker bar, 30mm socket and some loctite, my mate hasnt given me back my old breaker or socket which ****ed me off.

twas raining today so i couldnt be arsed, but monday i shall whip off the hub and change that and drive the car down to a garage for painting and a few loose ends here n there

all that crap was done on friday,

yesterday i stripped the offending hub and found out that y wheel bearing as completely exploded adn managed to descimate the hub too :( so i'll be swapping the hubs over from the other golf tonight hopefully and i can get her on the road.

fitted the front tinted headlights now and they are looking sweet, will look far better when the debadged grille is on, headlight wiring loom is all installed and in place too :-)

car wil hopefully be taking in for painting next week and im now going to try and get someone to swap my 1800gti engine into this and ill drop a new head, cam and pulley onto along with my beasty oil cooler.

oh also put black side trims on the car as they look better than the chromies

will put more pics up tongiht :)

quick shift throw bracket

Today had to wake up early to go get a pipe to fix my bath as a leak appeared which starting dripping into the kitchen! doh!

got the tracking done at hyde road tyres, only 25 quid, bargain! started chucking it down in spades, but luckily when i got back and sorted the leak in the bathroom the sun was still shining  so then i started messing about with the car,

drained all the oil and took the sump off, cleaned it out, took the new oil pump apart and cleaned it with paraffin and then oiled the cogs with fresh oil.

whipped off the old pump and fitted the new one, this was 2 bolts, piece of cake :)

fitted the new schrick windage tray which has an inbuilt gasket, sump and torqued up all the bolts, fitted a new washer on the sump plug and fitted a new filter noting to put a fresh bit of oil round the seal before fitting hand tight. sorted

while i was down here i fitted the quick shift bracket, i had to cut it down as it was fouling the block before but shes sweet now

topped up with synta something or other 10w40 oil 3.4 litres :-)

fitted a blue power rohr to match the magnecor leads and the 2 pole fan switch to my new radiator

will have to pop to awesome gti tomorrow in the morning and pick up the samco hoses as the ones i ordered from ebay arent going to be here for 5 weeks *sighs*  however before i set off ill change the fuel filter as it needs doing and itll be depressurised as I've not driven her since 2 on thursday

then ill come back and start re-wiring the electrics in the engine bay, tidying up a few wires in the engine bay and giving it all a degreasing with some sugar soap. once the wirings redone, fit the battery jacket and put the polished battery cover over that.

then fit the new radiator, polished radiator brackets, samco hoses, the nuespeed theromostat, top it all up with coolang and sit back and relax, smoke a spliff, enjoy the mad fancy dress party and take her for a spin in the morning.

oh in the evening walshie came round and we cruised up to preston for a low key aircooled meet with mk3rob n beckyb, the hustler was scrubbing like mad but if it aint scrubbin it aint dubbin, we scrubbed the sump plug a couple of times too hahaha, but thats what happens when the sumps lower than your mams tits! we nearly ran out of petrol but just got into the forecourt in time, thank ****! and we managed to get lost whilst cruising around on the redline barely going on fumes :-/

we also saw a merc with SAF 75 on teh number plate and a riced up civic with WALSHY as the plate, co-incidence or what!

all was well tho :D

Title: Re: grungeisdead - mk1 misfortune

well today has been rather gay but productive

changed the fuel filter but one of the bolts fully snapped, have a 7 mile bike ride tomorrow to go get the part from a mate which is **** but at least ill have it!!!

disconnected the inlet pipe to the water pump to get to the themostat but those two bolts gave up the ghost as well! so i thought **** it, change the waterpump, phoned my mate at gsf and 20 minutes later a new waterpump at a very cheap price so in my hands

removing the old water pump was a since, take off the alternator belt, remove the alternator, it was three bolts, 4 bolts and the waterpump was off too. :)

fitted the nuespeed thermostat and new o-ring, same for the outlet on the new waterpump. put new bolts in on the inlet elbow

fitted the waterpump and alternator

removed the old radiators cleaned bits of the engine with some degunk and tidied a few electrical wires as they were a bit of a state, it still looks messy but hopefully is fully functional haha

fitted the old fan shroud and fan to the new radiator and mounted it with new polished brackets, fitted a polished radiator top cover too. when connecting all the hoses, the one from the expansion tank to the rad snapped, bloody old hoses, i wish the samcos had arrived! but its gonna be five weeks.... had to bike it to the local motor factors (luckily around the corner) to get a new one made up

filled up the car with 6 litres of g12, and disconnected the top inlet of the rad and let a bit of water come out and put the hose back on, to bleed the system.

put the battery jacket on and polished battery cover, just need that fuel filter bolt and ill be away grrrrrrrrrrrrr

couldnt be arsed taking any pics of the final product as it started raining but nearly done now, just need that vital fuel filter bolt and i shall be sorted :)

fitted to the hoses
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b12/yousafn/DSC00520-1.jpg)

fitted the brand new eibach 23.5mm arb on tuesday after work, before the nwvag meet. what a complete mission that was on my own, recruited some help from my housemate and its in and sweet as a nut...

I'm rather annoyed at the 2 poly bushes that go in the middle of the car on the clamps, the have a small ring in the centre that just gets in the way with the enlarged bar. I'm sure this needs cutting out but  I've pikeyed the clamps in for now. next week ill take those two bushes out, cut em down and fit them properly ;)

but now the car is so tight that on a 90 degree turn the rear cocks it leg, f**kin a :D

heres the old polybushed front arb i removed.

my exhaust manifold is also seriously blowing so needs changing asap for that stainless beasty...

and lastly I'm losing alot of oi! but no marks anywhere really bar at the back of the engine, I'm guessin the sump from where i fitted the windage tray as a didnt use longer bolts, tighten it up tho and itll be reet.

new heater matrix, front lower strut brace and heater valve arrived...

also painted up my  teh lucas 54 calipers, its a saf special paint job but it does the job muhahaha

sal came over today and we went down to a couple of scrappies, spotted a mk4 and mk6 polo both baseish models, golf mk3 estate and gl. couple of mk2 and mk3 gtis spotted some g60 calipers, and a fair few rear disc conversions :D

might go back for some...

got my timing set up properly with a light gun, it was only out by a couple of degrees but its bang on now. one of my exhaust manifold bolts has snapped off someone elses pikey attempt at getting it off...

gonna phone my mate martin tomorrow whos an abosl*te beast, I'm sure he'll be able to rock it out :D

also the vacuum pipe that comes from teh rocker cover was just attached to nothingness so i went to a fishing shop to get a tee piece connecter. the guy there pulled up this random crack box with odds and sods in and was looking for ages , he coudnt find it so i went into the car and he comes runnig out, gives me one...

me: legend mate, want a quid for it?

him: f**k offfffff!

nice one got it for free schaweet, so its now connected via a teepiece from my dizzy vacuum which is also connected to the TB. werd

anyway fitted new injectors, fuel hoses that arent frayed and a cold start valve, the old injectors were dirty as and the seals were absolutely shot!

i was thinking it could be a wheel bearing too, I'm pure para about wheel bearings especially on cars that have been stood for a while so i usually change them out of matter of course

anyway had a bit of a busy day today...

cut the old exhaust manifold off the car, it was going to be salvagable but then i just got pissed off *sighs*

twas a right mission trying to get the old manifold out the car once disconnected, had to come out the top of the bay, was comtemplating takign a driveshaft off but i perserved yanking the c**t out and it was done. thankfully it was miles easier to get the new one in from below the car. woot.

cleaned up the block, stuck the new headgasket on then stuck the head on and slightly tightened up the bolts to hold it in place

fitted the new exhaust mani with all new gaskets and nuts, it was a right pain to get the inlet manifold in with the strut brace in place but i perserved again cos i wasnt taking it off.

i had painted up the inlet manifold, water outlet and throttle body in matt black.

did some other stuff too but I'm bored now so cant be arsed going in detail, so my jobs tomorrow

pick up these from vag:-
inlet manifold bolt and washer x 1
throttle body gasket
cold start valve gasket
injector inserts x 4
1/2" drive to 3/8" drive adaptor from motor factors

then tomorrows jobs are

connect ht leads to dizzy
fit cambelt tensioner
torque headbolts up
fit injector inserts
plug fuel injectors in
fit the 2 gaskets (throttle body/cold start valve)
find the jubilee clip for one water hose
connect oil breather hoses/vacuums
connect throttle cable
refit battery

turn over car by hand see if its all good

turn car over, sh!t pants, watch engine explode!

if all is good then i can drive to the garage to get the exhaust fitted with a flexi and then were reet.

couple of pictures

Well where to begin...

firstly

COCKNUGGETS

ARSEBANDITS

FANNYtwitS

FUDGEPACKERS

CUMQUAT

...

well. ahem. That pretty much sums up the last few weeks in a nutshell.

Since the manchester leg of pikeytech tnt tour began back on the 19th september, my big gay purple bellend of a car has been off the road.

She was taken off due to a snapped manifold stud, so i thought oh yeh ill fit my new stainless steel manifold now, and you know I'm there ill just change the headgasket too...

hmmm sounds alreet in theory, but bearing in mind I've never done anything like this before and I'm probably like for it go to arse over tit, i thought id do it anyway.

So as you have possibly read in previous entries that i fitted the new exhaust manifold and refitted the head with a new gasket, but in my inabilities to time the car and being a general twit i managed to snap the camshaft...

so whilst waiting for a 2nd std cam to arrive in the post i went a bit mental and on a bit of a spending spree and bought the car lots of presents.

also did loads of bibs and bobs to her while she was off the road

baffled aluminum sump and windage tray
new sump gasket
16v servo
22mm master cylinder
polished ported inlet manifold
ported and polished 1600 head
piper 285 cam
all new gaskets and seals have been fitted where neccessary.

got some pictures as she stands at the minute

jobs left to do before mot

setup static timing - hoppygti and co will be arriving tomorrow hopefully to give me a hand
bleed brakes
get manifold to centre pipe flexi made

then i can mot that son of a beech!!!

more jobs to do

Leaks - Change OS 1/4 light seal, Clean Sunroof draining channels
sunroof - take apart, regrease, refit
Plug for Wiper Hole
1/4 lite seal OS
Oil Cooler Braided Hoses
2 x rear bumper clips / 1 x Front Bumper Black

monday -

took the 280mm brakes off the car as they have now been sold, everything was sweet taking them off bar the fact i cant get the braided hoses out for the life of me from the caliper, so disconnected at the rigid pipe end and ill just have to get new std front brake pipes for the time being as thats all funds will allow

so fitted the brakes on the passenger side, everything was hunky dory, about 15 minutes later and jobs a good un

just need to fit flexi pipe (ordered from gsf)

get round to the drivers side, go to mount the carrier and realise that the mountin holes on the wheel bearing housing have been dethreaded... the housing came part of my 280mm kit and the bracket mounts on the opposite side, negating the need for thread...

BUT they could have f**king left it there, god damn mofos...

would have put the 280mm kit back on but id already disconnected the flexi pipes and didnt fancy bleeding the brakes just to have to do it in 2 days again!!!

so thats where we end today, a brakeless drivers hub...

thursday

well after i posted that i saw a glimmer of sun appear so i shot out to do some work on the car

changed the lower rad hose for a new GSF, note to self, samcos are fully gay dont ever buy them again, so much shorter than the GSF jobbie, no wonder it leaked

gsf price like 2.50 bargaaaaaain

had to tighten up a few of the brake union connections that were going into the t-pieces as they were leaking slighty and fitted a new throttle cable

drivers side  front - now stripped the hub and wheel bearing housing off the car in preparation for a replacement that actually has threaded holes for teh brake carriers... stupid brake factory who gave me the last hubs are complete gayors

so its all looking a bit sparce haha

replacement wheel bearing housing(with hub and wheel bearing) is on route,  i was hoping it would be here today, but i thought i might as well get this job out the way so when it arrives i can build it up in the house and just go outside and bolt everything up in not very long at all...

wooooooop, bit of time not doing uni work is time well spent... now back to the slog :(

hopefully arranging collection for project muppet this weekend but im struggling to get hold of a trailer in the walsall area as a friend who lives locally to their has offered to drive it up to manchester for free!

just off out to whip the short shift kit and front arb off, the water inside the car was from a leaky heater matrix, which sods law dictated i only changed six months ago. morale there is, if it aint broke dont fix it.

Does anyone know if the hubs are the same for small block mk1s, ie can i use my gti hubs and wishbones on project muppet, it means i can just take the complete coilover strut/hub/brakes and wishbone off in one go for swapping over :-D

also after a spare rear axle to get shot blasted and powdercoated, want to build it up with mk4 rear discs and a proportion valve.

got some stuff to get shot off here if anyones interested
Do you have the carpeted floor from the red Mk1 still?
yep,

woke up late today, walshie dropped by to get chop happy on the nova loons springs.

anyway fitted the fks onto the rear of muppet and the jamex springs/shocks onto beena.

rear shocks coming off
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b12/yousafn/more%20pics/DSC01001.jpg)

coilies on rear
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b12/yousafn/more%20pics/DSC01002.jpg)

whipped front hub assembly, coilover strut and 256mm G60s off beena

whipped the same off the muppet

but was faced with a gayored outer cv, (this is why it was a pain to push the car onto the drive)

so whipped off the driveshaft,

got a couple in the house so will measure them up later tonight, hopefully one will be reet! gotta clean up the two drivers side hub assemblies and spin the adjuster rings down a bit, then tomorrow can finish swapping over the coilies/brakes.

probably wont bother bleeding the brakes just yet, as i may be fitting a 22mm mc and servo, might need to fit a gti brake linkage bar.

loads more jobs to do but plenty of time. woo

good news, found a matching driveshaft in me batcave

found out today the engine is a JB which is a 1.5 70bhp lump.

have sourced a weber 32/36 DTML, k&n filter and EZ inlet manifold to run a 4 pin carb. If the weber turns out to be too expensive i have a pooberg 2e2 which i can put on...

although looking at the current inlet manifold it was made by satan himself with the two most inaccessible bolts holding it to the head.....

anyway got the rear interior fitted today and some of the speaker wiring laid down, also fitted the harness pre-tensioners, still got to wire them up, but ive got a 4 way power distribution block for the stereo, central locking, amp etc.

anyway some pics of the interiay

undecided as to cover the suspension turrents in carpet or leave them green, ill also be getting a rear strut brace to ideas as to colour code it or paint it black please?!

could even go white to match the wheels when they are painted and the white headlining (which is already fitted)

also turns out the engine mount is that of the large block engine so my gti engine will drop straight in, the 5 speed box will need a small bit of modifying to fit along with the complete gti gear linkages, however ive got a full missinglinks short shift kit for that job :)

on a trip to derby today or tomorrow to see chaz and pick up some 14 inch mini g60 steels, crystal cross-hairs and some m3 rear lights (not for the muppet, for beena, but mainly to sell, swapping std rears for ebaylicious goodies :P )

twas chucking it down in manchester today so didnt bother messing about with the carb, instead i camped out in the car and wired up my stereo and central locking, still got the electric window motors to do tomorrow and fit the lower dash trays after hiding the wiring.

also got the front door cards to fit after getting some rubble sacks and duck tape to make door skins before putting the door cards on.

also popped the front and rear lights on the cars.

Goodridge Braided Hoses - GSF 99580
Bushing Kit - GSF 71709

got a few things done at the weekend, harnesses are all wired up and door cards all fitted.

removed the g60 brakes and packaged them all up and put my 239mm setup back on, only to then win a 270mm tsr conversion on ebay  so they will be coming off again, but its got a set of new pads, braided hoses and calipers, i dont need the calipers so ill make up a VWII G40 239mm setup for sale complete with grooved/drilled discs and new pads

also got 2 mk2 rear disc stub axles and caliper carriers ready for some mk4 ally calipers :-D

so i still need the following things for that

Rear Disc Shopping Conversion -

Golf Mk4 Calipers
Mk2 Rear Discs x 2 - GSF60340 - 15.95
Mk2 Rear Pads Pagid ( 1 Set ) - GSF64601A - 14.90
Mk2 Rocco 16v HB Cable x 2 - GSF73132 - 9.50
Mk2 Rear Wheel Bearings x 2 - GSF41311K - 5.95
Mk4 Caliper Hoses from TSR

was on a bit of a spending spree  bagged this for 15 quid, debadged twin spot grille, I'm not a fan of quad lights on mk1s but cant beat that for a bit of cheapness

The Carbs arrived in the post today, so i had a nosey around to see how complete they were and what i still needed to get, trial fitted them on a spare head and found out i need longer manifold studs 50mm is too small, measured it up and i need 80mm studs so will have a gander for them.

Also needed to get a 2-1 adaptor block for the throttle cables and a 3 way t-peice adaptor for the fuel line to the carbs, got these for 14 quid through eurocarb.

anyway some pictures of the carbs, trial fitted to the spare head and car to check out any fitment issues and clearance issues especially around the MC, its tight but perfectly do-able. Ill be fitting a 22mm master cylinder I've got in the house so ill route the brake pipes accordingly.

I've decided to mount the fuel pump and reg on the scuttle panel next to the coil, it'll just make for easing routing than having it go aruond the front. Does anyway know what i do with the mechanical fuel pump on the block? do i just leave it disconnected?

trial fitting on spare head

inlet manifold

not sure of make, holes are correctly ported for the inlet holes on the head however it could seriously do with some polishing internally

a couple of randoms

them trial fitted on the car

MC clearance, good enough :D

sorry for loads of pics but I'm sure someone out there will apprieciate them :D

oh and i still need to pick up a backbox, bushing kit and brake fluid before i get anywhere!

boooooo today has been a  good and bad day,

got the passenger side brakes and wishbones off, got the new wishbone fitted and got the 270mm brakes and braided hoses hooked up on that side,

got round to doing the drivers side, got the old wishbone off and brakes off, fitted the new wishbone but went to tighten up the front wishbone nut (where the strut brace would attach but the bolt wouldnt tighten up for love nor money!

so whipped off the new wishbone to ensure that the bolt was actually screwing into the chassis (as it just bolt sits in the bush and tightens up into the chassis) but low and behold its not!

so im kinda stuck, pissed off and knackered!

i may attempt it one day this week but im not really sure of what can actually be done, grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! could this be the end of the muppet?!   i sincerely hope not!

next day -

got a tap and die set this morning and managed to sort the wishbone thread out woohoo!

so got the wishbone and carrier on, and tie rod and hub attached

disc and caliper attached

needed 3mm spacers to clear the calipay but job done, centre caps in the house

then decided to strip all the gear linkages

cleaned them up with de-gunk and a wire drill

painting them up

once theyve had a few coats ill re-fit it all with new bushes and the short shift kit
Title: Re: grungeisdead - "project muppet another mk1 joins the flock"
Post by: grungeisdead on 20 April 2008, 02:17
got the shift rod linkages all painted up and sorted, just awaiting a goodie pack from missing linkz with a teflon accelerator pedal push, shift rod bush, headlight wiring relay and weighted shift rod that just takes the place

Shift rod linkages painted, all new bushes and tsr linkage

The top golden bar is being replaced with a weighted shift rod from missing linkz, also coming is a teflon shift rod bush and accelerator pedal bushing, and an uprated headlight wiring loom.

some shiney bits - top radiator cover, coil cover and brand new fuel pump (it wont be used on the engine but will just look nice and shiney on the block)

Some odds n sods, service related parts (all new bar the leads - coil, 22.2 passat mc, sparks, gaskets, tie rod ends and belts)

new water pump and 90a alternator (needs cleaning up)

Stuff to do

Stuft to get - Pre MOT

* Backbox

Brakes - Pre MOT

* Enlarge Bulkhead Hole
* Fit 22.2mm Master Cylinder
* Plumb Brake lines and brake switch
* Bleed Brakes

Other Pre MOT Jobs to fit

* Refit Gearlinkage
* Fit Coil/Sparks/Belts/Leads
* Plug Expansion Tank Hole
* Fit Facet Pump & Filter
* Fit new mech pump and block off outlets
* Fit Inlet Manifold
* Fit Carbs
* Plumb fuel lines
* Fit throttle linkages
* Mount Oil Cooler
* Change Oil
* Fit Front Splitter

turns out the new master cylinder isnt really suitable for my application and without a servo will make it harder to stamp on the brakes so teh std one just went back on.

re-fitted the gear linkage, but its super stiff now, too stiff for my liking, its coming off again, gotta do a few tweeks and rebuild teh shifter base and drill out the rivits that hold the shift rod bush in place

fitted new sparks, leads, dizzy cap, rotor arm, clutch cable, and chucked 3 litres of fresh oil in there (previously put half a litre in the new filter when that was fitted and drained the oil the other day

chopped down some manifold studs to mount the inlet manifold but two were bent and by that time i was bored so gonna chop some more up and test fit on the head in the house and have the carbs on for tuesday/wednesday. need to get some aluminium sheeting cos i want to make a bracket mounts the bulkhead where the coil resides to mount the pump/reg and coil

and the recaros came, subframes are gettin welded in the next week or so, gotta pass them on to a mate

got pally with mr hacksaw again today and cut down some more manifold bolts that werent bent this time   fookers

bolted it up to the head in the house to check it all fitted ok, jobs a good un

you can just see to the right that I've blocked off the vacuum take off, ill be pluggin two vacuum lines into this for the vacuum guage in the car and one to the dizzy

stuck the carbs on so i could get the fuel lines measured up, the one of the left is a bit short so ill be sorting that oot.

spent a while working out where i wanted to mount the filter king for neatness of the plumbing in the bay and noticed too coincedentally placed holes, so ill be cutting the mounting plate that came with it and drilling some new holes in it to mount it to the carb, should look pretty cool when its all fitted.

means i can also retain the original coils placement and just mount the fuel pump on the bulkhead next to it.

when i get round to doing the bay I'm either going to chop out the rain tray completely or thinking of louvering the panel so its open in front of the carbs, and incorate vents in the sides of the wings to vent air into the rain tray and into the path of the carbs. not sure out much air would be sucked in from the vents being placed so far up the wing (right next to the doors/windscreen) but will be interesting anyway if i do it

refit all the gear linkage
plug expansion tank hole
fit uprated wiring loom and smoked indis

also gotta get angle grinder happy on the short shift adaptor to shave a few mm off the edges to clear the block.

got a sheet of metal to make a bracket for the throttle cable holders, will cut that out tomorrow and drill holes for the throttle cable adjusters.

might mount the filter king and pump if i get round to it.

ordered a few more bits to finish the carb assembly, alot more bits were needed than i first anticipated but better doing it all now that fannying around later.

anyway quick list of those bits

fuel pump inertia switch
weber pedal block
heatwrap and stainless ties
2ms of overbraided fuel lines

and need to find a relay in the house to wire up the pump from the igntion, big thanks for mk1nath on the mk1 owners club for loads of advice and pictures and stuff while ive been gettin me head round this all.

well updates

managed to get the carbs spitting and stuttering but not firing up, fuel pressure guage was broken and i didnt have a balancer for hand but new FPG is  on the way and a friend is letting me try out his balancer that he picked up for setting up his twin 45s on a 2L 16v.

also will check timing is correct by whipping spark number one out, turning the head by hand and checking teh piston height with a screwdriver.

fuel pressure was at 2psi before the gauge broke so i dont want to mess about adjusting the fuel pressure without a working gauge to check and i dont want too much fuel pressure in the carbs. also got some fresh petrol today cos the car was left garaged for the last year so the petrol probably lost all its octane level

and went down to my local tyre fitters and got the yokos on the routays, got them balanced then stuck em on the car, bled the brakes while i changed the wheels for ease of convenience so i finally have a brake pedal that works woo!

some piccies cos the day was still warm (check out my 3.75 bhp grass cutting skillz)

so all that needs doing pre mot is getting the carbs up and running and once thats done i can set the gear linkage ensuring all gears are correctly selecting, refit backbox and get it down to pat the friendly mot man :D

errr driving to the mot station for 10, was running late due to a flat battery but my housemates girlfriend sorted me out with her getz, jump start it, get 5 minutes down the road and the idle creeped up to 3k, pull over in the park rather than going onto the main road, open the bonnet and was greeted with some flaming heatwrap.

my guess is the carbs didnt burn off all the fuel, some leaked out and caught fire. luckily i managed to get out unscathed but the car is rather poorly to say the least sad.gif

ahhh well win some lose some, and this was a massive fail.

edit: spare battery was in the passenger footwell, managed to grab the battery, my wallet and turn the fuel pump off before doing one sharpish

couple of updates,

I've managed to pick up an M-Tech Automotive Megasquirt V3 Ecu brand new for 175 quid, This comes with the following:

Megasquit V3 Ecu (With new case)
Wiring loom
Data cable
Software

The ECU is built to this Spec:

V3 ECU
4x COP Ignition drivers
GM Sensors
VR Crank Pickup

This is ideal for a Throttle bodies transplant for 8 Valve or 16 Valve non Turbo.

It can run any 4 Cylinder by wasted spark/ or any 4 cylinder COP engine such as GTi6 if it uses a trigger wheel (either 36-1 for 60-2) so pretty much any VW, Ford, Vauxhall, Pug, Citroen etc etc

I know the lupo has a 60-2 wheel so thats all good, will just need to go lop off all the connectors from a crash damaged loop or polo gti.

also managed to get some schroth harnesses with pre-tensioners for 82 squiddlers that shall be finding there way into the car, would take pics but cant be arsed. they are similar in colour for the first blue which makes me sex wee everytime.

and my potential colour choices

Got a few things done today,

Cut out the notchy bit on the transmission tunnel, so i can make a shifter template to make a base to attach it all up, nearly went deaf using the angle grinder in the car, ear muffs needed!

Got the Hocks off and popped the OZs on, temporarily as i want to put the hocks on my mk1 golf shell which ive sold, and put the black lorbers with near new 195/45/15 eagle f1s on the loop while i find some 14 inch tyres or sell the routes.

Also got a good gander at the hub setup, noticed there was an awful lot of play in the bearings inside the hub, it may be due to the fact theres no driveshaft in there, but im going to check the mk1 golf hubs tomorrow to check for thier movement inside the carrier. The mk1 Golf hubs will fit the lupo driveshafts, lupo struts and the wishbone ball joint. It will also allow me the hub carrier spacing to fit VWII Calipers, and a brand new vag mk1 polo master cylinder. Although i will only have 239mm brakes for the time being it means i can get the car running and mot'd and then find out if there is enough room to fit the mk1 golf servo and linkage with the engine installed.

If not i will have to invest in a remote servo before i can run the 256mm brakes as the larger pistoned calipers means the pedal would hit the floor long before your brakes had any real bit without the use of a servo

The balljoints look at a skewif angle which is in part due to it being jacked up at the time and i think with the engine installed more weight will be applied on them which will allow to sit true. hopefully :)

also while having a wee smoke i made a list of some things to do but theres loads ive probably missed out.

Had a bit of a chiller day at the unit, Rob was changing the hub over on his cabby for one from my red shell, which solved his humming niose thats plagued him for the last week or two.

I stuck the lorbers on the polo and while the wheels were off sprayed the arches with metal ready.

Plan for this week is to prep the interior, wire brushing it all and then getting some metal ready on it and lashing it all with por 15.

then nnce thats done i can get the inner arches and engine bay sprayed up, Robs trying to tempt me to spray the whole car there while we have the whole car stripped so i reckon i  could be tempted now to save fannying about later.

Zee polo also met its younger sister too :)

And hoppys mini adventure collecting my new car, danke dude
Right, the task was simple..........go to a local town 25 miles away, collect a car & drive it home................How hard could it be?????

The ride Mk1 Polo, T reg with 895cc's of fury under the bonnet, full MOT & Tax.

I was on time to collect the motor, made another Dub friend as we discussed the details of the deal, handed over some dollar for the car & drove away.

I added £10 worth of Shell's finest petroleum distilate and ..............................................

This is where it all went wrong.

Seems as though the old girl wanted to suck up it's own faecal matter through the fuel line, causing much jumpyness & lack of power.

After getting one tow from a friendly MK2 Golf Driver (with a full leather interior I add) and being towed to a garage I though every thing was fine.

But another 2 miles on & things were serious.  The lack of power & sudden engine dying made it impossible to be safe on the road without some one pile driving me up the ass  So i took the decision it was too dangerous to continue, so pulled on over.

So it was down to this;

(Check out the AA man's face  )

yesterday we went down t hoppys go to pick up the wee polo, armed with some spare leads, a new fuel filter and some odd tools we were all set.

got there and the old fuel filter was pure jank man so whipped that off and the rubber gasket that sits inbetween the airbox and the carb was slightly perished so we just bodged it back in place as best as we could.

the wee beasty fired up after that, took it for a wee spin adn bar a knocking from a cv joint all was absolutely sweet. couldnt help but do my first bit of modding and ripped all the badges off the front.

woke up well late today and couldnt really be arsed but after tommy made me a killer steak sammich i was ready to roll

painted the hood satin black, and underside with por15

painted the front panel in por15 and decided to poke at some holes... bad idea!

holy moly

gearbox mount

or this way

and there are two types of clutch operations for the lupo engines i assume, cable and hydraulic.

is this setup the cable
(http://i16.photobucket.com/albums/b12/yousafn/DSC00587-1.jpg)

and this the hydraulic?

(which connects to another cylinder operated by the clutch pedal
if so ill stick with the cable as it minimises the amount of plumbing, pedal box and bulkhead modifications, it just means i cant use the regular lupo gearbox mount in conjunction with this one unless i get one off a 1.4s that fits differently to the gti one it seems (after examining the one on charlies to the mounts i got with this engine)

Well today i managed to angle grind away alot of rust and a stupid amount of filler on the rear bootlid, etch primed it then just slapped on 2 cans of satin black after keying it all.

Could do with another couple of cans, so i will finish that at some point this week.

The 4x4 look is comical but bar the tracking being out it still handles sweet as fook, however

when the left front wheel hits a bump, rut or pothole the steering goes all over the shop so i suspect a worn balljoint, and i think the arb rubbers could do with replacing, ive not checked it but there is no doubt some excess play in it. If i can get some g-ladersiete bushes cheap ill do it. The steering rack on the other hand is tighter than a [ insert gary glitter joke here ] so thats schawibbady, just need to get rid of the wafer thin steering wheel.

wooo, well not much has happened on lupolo in the time being, we painted up the rear panel in silver, and the front wings, going to paint the rear number plate surround in satin black ala derby cls style and i need to top coat the por 15'd front panel with primer and some satin black or diamond silver as the por15 is UV reactive so wont be too good for a long period of time!

got all the engine mounts i need now so happy days, just need to get up to the unit and get it stuck in there :)

As for the crashbot thats changed a fair bit since the last time it was pictured.

had Charlie on the go working her magic doing some graffiti on the sides of his daily  ..  8-)
Took a good shot of mine and his and got a few of Charlies superb artwork ..

The car went form this ...

anyway we had some carb troubles and in the process of trying to fix it i got bored and stuck from 40mm springs on the front and bodged a GTI front splitter on to it and took a wet flat to the bonnet and left it to rust.

and then i spotted a lonely looking GT lying in the corner of the unit so off out with the engine which is now sitting in the crashbots engine bay.

got a few jobs left to do on it, well a few more than i expected anyway

put running gear back on
jubilee clip the new fuel lines
fit new camshaft pulley and woodruff key
set static timing
recheck and tighten head bolts
bolt up water pump
bolt up thermo housing
connect lower rad hose
finish connecting up and splicing gts engine wiring and fusebox loom to the cars interior loom

muchos appriciation to giorgio and char for thier help getting it in, fingers crossed we may have it running for the end of the weekend :)

also managed to swap the early rear bumper for a brand new chrome late bumper and i know a friend who has a nos rear trim and end caps which i shall be having woop

well progress has been slow recently, hampered by the lack of a runnign motor to get me back and forth to the units.

just a lil runaround but going to stick the OZ routes on there and a brand new remus exhaust thats for the lupolo but itll go back on when its ready

fitted the lupo engine today, was on my own but still managed it mainly thanks for a trusty 3 tonne low loader jack that managed to beast the car into the air. probably slightly unsafe with the lack of axle stands but job was a good un

Still need to bolt the rear gearbox mount, just needs jacking up from the back now the car is back on all wheels.

Next job is to assess if i can use a mk3 alternator with the gti alternator pulley.

fit new brake lines throughout
refit calipers and discs
check clearance for mk1 golf rad
fit oil catch tank
fit lights, bumpers and grill

thatll keep me busy while i start to dechipher the lupo loom and make my new megasquirt loom up and find someone who can weld me some box section to my recaro mounts and harness mounting point.

also on the agenda for the crashbot

fit 256mm conversion
refit mk1 polo engine loom and use part of the GT engine loom (weve already wired up the fuel pump)
source and fit a new/good used drivers side tie rod arm
drop engine, drill out rounded intermediary pulley bolt and fit new bolts, cambelt and waterpump

i need an engine crane, its decided. this fliping agro bottom pulley bolt is fliping me off and im going to have to lift the engine out the bay to attack it with a drill! or just drop it out the bottom but after the pia we had getting the rear gearbox mount lined up i cba arggggggh

anyway stuck the chrome bumpers on the lupolo just to please me after a day of agro!

rear panel and the sides of the rear 1/4 and front wings have been sprayed, ive also noticed a spot of por15 i forgot to get on the front panel, its well annoying me and my por15 has set harder than a mofo

Comments:

Bought this car off Lucy as a daily runaboutu while i finished the engine conversion on my previous daily which failed on me =[ . The car was previously owned by Manked Out now Blug on the forums, a good friend of mine and he was pleased to see the car coming back to manchester. Previous owner to that was a gentleman named Ade, who now has a scooby powered T4 bus =D

Anyway the little Coupe S is on 115k,   The Car runs sweet as a nut, as was absolutely faultless bar misfiring and loss of power on sporadic random occasions. I decided the best course of action was a mini service, new Spark Plugs / Leads / Oil Change / Oil & Air Filter, still didnt solve it. So next step was to rule out the Hall Sender. Got a known working MH dizzy off Manked Out and still the misfire would rear its head. I could always get to my destination as 2 minutes idle time and we were good to go again.

After taking the airbox off, we cleaned out the oil breather pod, replaced a few vacuums and reinstalled the previously missing exhaust heatsheild, as the current ducting just wasnt feeding enough warm air into the carb. After getting the heatsheield on thanks to Karl all is good, its a mk1 polo one at the moment, will stick a mk2 one soon as the outlet hole is the same diamter as m y current tubing but it seems like the problems resolved.

I've done about 2k miles in it since I've owned it and loving every minute

Fitting very soon.

Had a productive xmas/new years spell

- Tidied up Stereo Wiring and got the power ariel working on a switch
- Tidied up harness pre tensionier wiring
- Ordered HnR Cup Kit 70/60 and G-Ladersiete Outer TCA Polybushes
- Got a new glovebox as my ones fubarred
- Got 2 bare mk3 struts which im going to wire-brush, paint and get new vag bearings pressed in
- Went on a 300 mile round trip for pick up a full custom exhaust that was fitted on a mk2 loon for 60 miles and fitted that with the help of friends, chopped down the tailpipe as it stuck out miles. not decided on where i want the final chop to be and if im going for an upswept. But its a straight-through mid section with single silencer and sounds amazing =]

we picked up the banded steelies too, they are proper nice and were welded by a qualified engineer and welder, happy days.

they will be coming to a very special vw, not one of mine however but on loan to a very good friend

Well with the help of Karl and Yeti, we managed to get the following fitted over the last couple of days.

PPS Subframe/Wishbone Conversion
HnR Cup Kit 60/60
10mm Lowering Top Caps
G40 Track Control Arms with G-Ladersiete Bushes
G40 Steering Rack Bracket, Steering Arms & Damper

I'll get to feel the real benefits when i get it tracked up tomorrow and I'm not used to the steering damper, it makes the steering feel far lighter, tis like power steering *bleurgh* I'm sure alot of that lightness will be removed when the tracking is set bang on, and ill just have to get used to it, but i think i might take it off in a month or so and see the difference it makes on its own.

Right pictures time, unfortunatly as i ran out of battery i didnt take any of the subframe fitted from underneath, or during the fitting of the steering arms and damper (as its not very interesting )

one bare mk3 underside

yeti man showing us one of the 1001 uses of a vice =D

front strut built up with g40 tca

karl and me had to enlarge two of the holes on the passenger side arb mounting point as it was about 2.5mm. We first had the worlds smallest file, then moved on to a big f**king drill and an even bigger drill bit and that was soon elongated enough in the right direction

old rear shocks

new shocks and springs fitted

Its a good job this lot was replaced as the existing suspension setup was pooned, every shock was buggered and both tca arb bushes were well past thier bests, also to say my brake pads and discs were a little thin was the understatement of 2009  Charamon let me borrow the use of her pads from dennis (her derby) and steve refaced some discs for me, until i can get new bleed nipples for the 256mm brakes as they are pretty much siezed to fook

beruit

i will take piccies tomorrow of the car lowered in zee daylight, may even wash it hahaha

but heres one for now, with prescillas lil red relative

also a note for anyone interested, the banded steels are for sale now, pm me if interested

Well I've had a little coupe s as a daily runner for the last few months, its done me nearly 6k faultless miles and gone through many changes

from this

to this

with this rather nice list of goodies

HnR Cup Kit - 60/60
PPS Subframe & Wishbone Conversion
10mm Lowering Top Caps
G40 Steering Damper
G40 Tie Rods
G40 TCAs
G-Laderseite TCA Polybushes
14 x 7 OZ Routes + 195/45/14 Pirelli's
Homebrew Rear Light Tints similar to Late Mk3 Spec
Removed Rub Strips
Custom S/S Exhaust - Single silencer system with straight through centre section, built by Custom Exhausts in Cymbran.
Cat 2 Alarm / Immobiliser

But then someone decided to put a mk1 golf gti small light up for swaps, so hes having the coupe s with std interior so i get to keep my bucket seats, harnesses and pretensioners and the subframe/wishbone conversion, straight swap but I'm putting 6 months tax on it

its a bit rotten in places but I've got all the neccessary repair panels and its taxed and tested for a year nearly so ill be able to drive it to me welder woop woop

well this weekend was a bit of an epic one.

down to d-town after work friday for a chiller sesh with chazbots, karl and steve.

Saturday was fuelled by the best chilli bean, cheese and beans jacket potato, me and karl stripped the wee coupe of the subframe, stuck the old anti roll bar on and put the std interior back in, was a very chilled out affair and despite  it being freezing after 5 minutes of working we were well toasty

so all was good and we set off home for a beast of a lasagne and some motherflipin 51st state =D

soo sunday morning and the mission commenced

part1 was the trip down to wiltshire, 140 miles, epic amounts of snow, some huge hills, ice made driving on non main roads interesting to say the least and karl had to push us as we got beached at one point.

last night saw the golf get some attention

fresh oil/filter
throttle cable
clutch cable
320mm wheel and snap-off boss
polished filler cap

this weekend I've got a few jobs to do

4 branch and ss exhaust
missing linkz short sh!t kit and rebuild gear linkage
change gearbox oil
coolant flush and change
polished coil and top rad cover
replace windscreen
replace throttle pedal rubber
good wash and polish

saturday

Woke up at 12 and met Jimsiss and his mate at the unit at 1.

sorted out james a megasquirt (an ecu not a shady spunkface in the corner) and then proceed to whip off the exhaust system and inlet manifold off the golf, ready for a 4 branch and magnex stainless steel system that would be arriving with the new mk1 golf.

That was a f**king mission and a half and in the end i ended up making it meet mr angle grinder.

the mk1 golf was collected at 3 =O lazy bastards i thought they were gonna get it at 10 grrrrrrrrr so it came to me at 7.

got the 4 branch on (eventually, one bolt was being a reet can't), inlet manifold unfortunatly when i took it off the inlet manifold gasket was goosed and i had no spare, or any hermatite! ghey, bodged anyway. rest of the exhaust system fitted, the middle section was easy, and all the rubbers went on a treat after some kettle action, but the rear was a twit as its a golf and its over teh axle! gheyors.

after f**king about for time i just did some rather precarious uber jacking and it was one, hurrah.

good to go then to the gangsters ball hurrah, pack everything up, lock everythign way, put sh!t in the car, get changed, get in the car, start her up. wont idle and tappety like a mother nice person when revving. grrrrrrrrr beruity inlet manifold gasket =[

my phone battery ran out at like 7 o clock so fitted the 4 branch, inlet manifold, exhaust, anti roll bar was all done in near enough darkness under the car so it took me aaaages grrr, probably why i missed the fact the gasket was so fooked.

so thought f**k it if i cant get to d-towns then I'm not sleeping over night at the unit cos i cant phone anyone for help, so ill try and get back home, hoping i didnt break down on one of the country lanes! finally got in at ten to 1.

baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaastards. one a plus note the exhaust looks the bollocks and sounds sweet.

hope gsfs open tomorrow or i have an inlet manifold gasket in the house.

gayors

sunday

went to the unit and got an inlet manifold off a spare dx engine in the unit, car will idle fine now, but still tapping on idle and acceleration. going to retard? the engine a bit to see if i can stop the pinking (if it is that) otherwise i may have to suspect that the tappets need replacing, or are being starved of oil?

so the impending plans are the following, probably this weekend

new oil pump
new cambelt
new cambelt tensioner

and still need a replacement windscreen (anyone?)

got pictures of the grot spots, sent them to a few friends to see if they can help out asap. if your a mobile welder and fancy a go gimme a shout =]

Well its been an interesting week to say the least.

Thursday Hoppy came down to the unit and we began to sift through the spares we amassed from the project acquastion. Then come eleven o clock at night after both being throughly shattered, rich was insistant that we sorted out my exhaust manifold, as it was blowing. This turned out to be an epic mission and we were at it till 1 int morning. The cause of my incessant ticking?! an exhaust manifold gasket on the wrong way round, i had fitted it incorrectly when i fitted the 4 branch and exhaust last weekend but considering my phone ran out of battery and i was working with no light, the fact i actually managed to fit a 4 branch and exhaust is a wonder in itself haha =D

We also fitted my lorbers and sorted the fuel guage out, as the car has been sat for some time the float has siezed in position. Sorted with a bit of wd40!

So come friday, the mission was work in the morning, then off to hyde road tyres to have the wheels tracked, and off to an exhaust place to have a c clamp put on the exhaust, one rubber an it alinging properly, after enquiring at hyde road tyres about a decent exhaust place, a mechanic offered to do it for me, and for a tenner he disassembled the exhaust, putteyed all the joins, put 2 new c clamps on and the new rubber. happy days

After that i went over to GSF to pick up some goodies

Gearbox Oil
Gearbox Shift Repair Kit
Timing Belt
Timing Belt Tensioner
Oil Pump
G12 Coolant
Injector Seals

So off to Derby I went, got to the unit to see Karl & Yeti man.

Fitted the Injector Seals & Cleaned up the injectors, should have checked the spray pattern really but ill get round to it when i get some jars to measure the fuel volume to ensure its within specification.

Dropped part of the coolant to top it with G12, i say part of the coolant, because i was too baked and forgot about dropping the thermostate to get rid of the other 3 litres of water hahaha! doh job for another day then, but at least theres some fresh g12 in there anyhoo

and that ensued the days missions to a close.

Saturday we met up with Schneil & Rach to go to the unit and fit a new bootlid on neils GT. I decided it would be a perfect time to fit my missing linkz short sh!t kit off the deceased muppet along with the gsf shifter rebuild kit. Did the front half rebuild, leaving the gearstick side till the sunday. Didnt manage to get the gearbox oil done as the pikey'd tool for the job got merked under my hands of steel hahaha.

not to worry thats a job for this week, as ive got the proper gearbox drain tool from GSF a while back when i dropped teh oil  on beena.

anyway some piccies from the first wash and semi arsed wax after 750 miles of driving. Came up well, better than i thought it would be. There are obivioulsy a few points on attenion rust wise, underneath thte car is remarkably solid, i made a point of poking aroun everywhere when it was up on the ramps, the rear beam mounting points are perfect, the jacking points could do with more underseal as some looks like its chipped off recently and i think the passengers inner sill section requires a small patch. the front valance where the chin splitter fits on the passanger side has rotted under the trailing edge which is also where the bottom 10mm self tapped holds the bottom of the wing in place. should be too difficult a job to replace and teh rest of the front panel is solid.

Im happy enough with it anyway, its never going to be a show car, and thats not what i want either, i just wanted a sweet daily, and i do love my mk1 gtis.

anyway some piccies

Removed teh precarious ariel and just routed it internally as the itrip thing still works with it inside

Fitted blanks on the ariel and wiper holes

removed the crazy led purple brake light that was connected and it would flash and was distracting me let alone other drivers

fitted a polished top rad cover and nearly set the car on fire as i forgot to remove the postive from the battery and short circuited the rad cowling off the power lead to the starter haha, its amply insulated now

fitted a new earth wire on the alternator to block as it was broken =/

set up the static and ignition timing to tdc.

Also got a 610 quid tax rebate this week = WIN

a cool rolling shot char got
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q104/winter_snowball/DSC01047.jpg)

also getting hold of some the silver gti lower side decals as mine as missing w00t which will tidy up the outside appearance a bit, especially after i swap the bonnet over for another black one we have in stock thats in far better nick paintwise (both are free of rust) and its had a good polish with some g3.

oh and last but not least, new windscreen should be fitted wednesday, ive enquired about green glass adn im just waiting for them to get back to me about it =]

Phew! Just a bit then! hahahaha

Picked up a new engine off a friend, we both assumed it was a 1.6 GTI EG block, but upon stripping it down, I came across a few concerns. First off, is that it is actually an FP lump, which was a 1.6 Carb engine fitted to 75-77 golfs, so proper early beasts. The Head cannot be used with the GTI injection setup as its for a carb, it has no injector holes.

The main reason I picked up the engine was because my own EG gti head is due a rebuild as the tappets are noisy and I suspect the valve stem seals need replacing as a matter of course. However as I now cannot use the rebuilt head, I will have to purchase another.

That leaves me at a quandry. Does anyone know the Bore stroke and compression ratio of the FP block. Will an EG 1.6 GTI head fit on the 1.6 FP block, and still produce the same power of around 113bhp. If I cannot use the block, can I at least use the pistons in an EG block.

So the rebuilt LS 1.6 head is for sale, and the bottom end complete with brand new pistons may well be if i cannot use it for my own application.

Taino & Jamesface picked up my new interior for me from cheltenham and me and chazbot embarked on an epic journey on saturday night to collect it from evesham, fuelled by pot, the worlds best fish and chip supper, ridiculous amounts of munchies, mad mooney mobster and some rude tunes, we were set! Got back early sunday morning, had a dope sleep and fitted the interior the next day.

Drivers Full Rear Arch Repair Panel

I need to get hold of the following and then its ready to get weldamathoned

Front panel, either lower valance or complete
Rear Panel, either lower valance or complete
Passenger Rear Arch Repair Panel

anyway thats all for now, jobs for this week include fitting the following

Me and Karlie had a productive day on saturday.

Fitted the Front Coilies and changed the discs and pads for some black diamond x drilled and pagids to make stopping less trouser explosive.

Snapped a camber eccentric top bolt grrr but found a suitable temporary replacement.

While i was fitting the front coilies and brakes, karlos set about sorting out a few loose ends here and there, sorting out a broken white clip on the passenger seat to stop it rocking, reattached my front splitter, straighted the gti badge and fixed the wing properly into place.

sunday, i washed and polished the car and re-adjusted the bonnet so it sits proper flush.

got nufty stuff done on zee loonamon too, was a productive weekend.

nice one hopstar - ive got a few too.

Well hopwana came up to visit in the cadster on tuesday (i think) haha was good to catch up wi him.

was an interesting day down the unit shall we say! got the fan belt off, loosened the intermediate pulley and water pump pulley bolts fannied about getting the lower timing cover off, got the tensioner off, fitted a new one which was desperatly needed as the old one was rubbing against the belt =[

aaaaaaaaaaanyway, went to fit my new cambelt, and its only the wrong it, its about 1 1/2 times the width and same for length, so i had to reuse my old belt! grrr, oh well cest la vie, new one is ordered from vw by rachy so shes a star!

anyway some pics from the evening
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q104/winter_snowball/dsc01633.jpg)

so on to saturday, i had grand visions of fitting my new 4 branch and new exhaust studs but i put the plans on hold, mainly because i overslept till 5 hahaha but also because i couldnt be arsed with it going wrong and if im getting the exhaust and inlet manifold off i might as well change the headgasket while im at it, turns out i think its due as ive noticed a bit of sludge collecting on my expansion cap =[ ive got a new headgasket and ill get the cambelt next weekend, so i think its definatly a job for the bank holiday weekend! All i need to get a some new head bolts and im set. oh forgot to add i got a new water pump. I would like to use the block ive got with brand new pistons but using the original bottom end and gearbox means less faffing about as i need it to be ready for reliable daily driving by the end of the weekend

So onto saturdays stuff i did do.

my drivers rear coilie is set too low and is scrubbing on most bumps, all the others are fine on any road surfaces bar mchoosive potholes but even standard cars aint safe on them.

passenger arch rear
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q104/winter_snowball/dsc01665.jpg)

drivers arch rear
(http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q104/winter_snowball/dsc01667.jpg)

unfortunatly my coilies seem to be a bit siezed grr and i didnt want to put any proper stress on it for fear of snapping an adjusting ring, the c spanner or merking my hands on some delightful inner arch! so i left that as a job for sunday and fitted my locking wheel bolts that id finally got out of the crashbot.

saturday night we were meant to go to a rave in worsley but as the only person who hadnt drank i was the designated driver although we were going nowhere with 3 up and that arch gap so we didnt botther in the end =[

so sunday it was fooooooookin baking and try as id like i couldnt sleep past midday cos the sun was beaming in so i set off to halfords to get some plusgas to unsieze the coilies although i completly forgot about it when i was there and came out with hermatite blue and silcion copper gasket sealent, autoglym polishing kit, clay bar kit and a machine polisher. ffs!!!

so after a burger king flex, i set out getting all 3.5 mighty raging horses in motion to help me cut my grass which was like a wee mini jungle! and set about cleaning, claybarring and polishing the car, which didnt come out too bad, the only problem is it makes you spot all the other imperfections more =[ paint imperfections i dont care about really but noticing bodged repairs and other things make me grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! i may have to offer defeat and buy a temporary daily while i do some bits and pieces on here, or at least get teh hole welded up haha! just finding time is a bastard working all week, if i could weld i would have done it as the first thing when i got her... meeshka!

anyway some piccies =]

you can see the oil patchs that have been left from a leaky oil filter housing and oil cooler take off jobbie, i took it apart cleaned it up and used a silicion copper gasket stuff on it, so tomorrow is the acid test to see if its done the job!

and two karile took just as we'd finished fitting the coilies
