Title: 2ltr 16v 9a engine more info please!
Post by: ...joe on 18 March 2006, 10:55
so this is out of a passat i've been told, is a 2litre 16 valve, but has milder cams than a kr, right? is it a tall block or was that the abf lumps? if not a tall block whats the deal with these? any good? also been told that its a good idea to use the kr cams to get a bit more ooomph out of it?

any info, advice etc welcome!

yep 9a is the short block, abf the tall block. i think its just the inlet cam that needs swapping over

I have been told to use the 1.8 mk2 head and cams on the 9A lump as it breathes better than the mk3 head. As I understand it the 9a is near identical to the 1.8 kr in many ways,  it's the same height as the kr so the exhaust mounts match up, all the mount points are the same, the gasket set is the same.
I think it's just the drive for the dizzy which needs swapping over and maybe a breather blanking off. It's on my list of things to do I just need to source a good block to rebuild now.

Yes with 9a when built mine gasket set is same apart from h/gasket so just buy 9a gasket set. Every thing from kr swops straight over dizzy, breathers and as said above use kr inlet cam. If best find one from automatic car dont seem to be as thrashed as manual car. My opinion anyway, You cant imagine the difference when swopped from kr to 9a. The low down torque and power just excellent, Even better with not to wild cams and 4branch.

If it helps you find the right block the code on my 2.0 16v 6a is 2J, not 6A as I'd expected
This confused me when i was looking for mine and i went and bought a 2.0 8v 2E block in error as the dude at the scrappy couldnt find 9A written on it anywhere...

Which block is the 6a mk2litre16v? is that the mk3 block as I thought the 9a came in audi 80 sport 16vs? anybody know the cars these blocks came from to make it easier to source and in case a bargain is to be found in a scrappy somewhere?

about the heads, ive seen pics of 9a and kr heads and on the kr the inlet ports are better and on the 9a the exhaust ports are better, so id be inclined to go with the kr head if you are leaving it standard, as you already have the added torque of 2l, might as well make the top end better

6A is audi block, got to change sump and oil pump over from kr. If i remember right!! Short block like 9a, abf and agg are tall blocks from golf, 9a from passat and corrado.

cheers for all that, but you'd say they are solid engines? i was looking through an old pvw where they had a 16v group thrash and most of the big power cars had 9a's. thats got to be a good sign right?! :P

Seems to be a fair few people all starting at once which can only be a good thing, unless we start fighting in scrapyards over old engines

My head has been ported and polished on my kr engine so it's getting whipped off and rehoned revalved and tappets etc. then going onto a self rebuilt lightened balanced and poss rebored 16v 9a or 6a block. check out my post in the mk2 section for the started list

Are all the senders etc in the same places on the 2l blocks?

9a blocks are usualy bullet proof, 16v heads need overhaul after 100k miles or so. If fitting in new block best to get head done while its all out saves taking head back of later, when puffing out blue smoke.

Audi 80 16v (mine was a '91) is a 6a, Passat 2.0 16v and Corrado 2.0 16v are 9a.
Earlier Passats and 'Rados had the 1.8 KR 16v so check the block for a big '2.0'

I looked for Passats for ages- go for an Audi as your far more llikely to find one!

Both same just one in audi put in long ways and other in vw's put in transverse hence sump and oil pump different.

Can i also add that there are also 2.0 blocks out there with 11J stamped on them that work a treat. I know cos my car has one. Beats me if i know what its off though!

edit: It turns out its acutally a 9a but you cannot see the 9a stamp till you remove the oil cooler and clean the block. It also has a big 11J cast into the block. Might help you all out if your looking through scrappys for this block.

Mine was a 9a and I was told it was from a Corrado. That was some engine, bullet proof and very tunable.

Should have kept it really......................................................  you know mate! lol

Is it just drop the engine in or do you need to do some mods get it to fit?
