IIRC, any other box is a fatherless son to fit, yeah?

Eh?

that's what I thought!

thank you for the info DH - very useful :)

I have been offered £600 as it is, very tempted as this will no doubt happen again, unless, as it sounds I go for a whole engine change to one with an 020 box?? would they be hard to get hold of due to being in saloons ect?

such a dilemma!

If you can get a cheap 085 replacement, do that.  I dropped one out in about an hour in a scrapyard.

Hook the box out, find a reputable specialist and stick it in to have the bearing replaced.  The one in the good sub-100k Polo was worn through the bearing surface and wouldn't have lasted much longer - it does seem the achilles heel of these boxes.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Holiday cottages on the Isle of Wight for 2-10 people? PM me.

Have managed to find a 085 (its from a 1.0l) for £45 so that has been chucked in the Polo - there was no time to have anything on it replaced, getting it back later - so we will see how long it lasts  but at least this one was cheaper then the last one!

Just so fricking happy to have my olop back!
cheers for the help though DH
