As far as i am aware you can't.  I asked a main vw dealer about it 4 years ago, and they told me the gti system was too large in diameter, or something to that effect.  However that was for a 1990 1.6 driver, i presume yours is a 1991/2 model so the result may be different.  If not i suggest a nice discreet DTM twin pipe conversion, suits the looks of the mk2 almost as well as the gti system, and will be nice and throaty to boot!

Yes you can very easily.  ( The below advice is not for 1.6 engine as bore is smaller )

the last bracket on the exhaust ( near rear bumper ) simply turn 180 degrees and hey presto an GTI8v exhaust backbox will fit.

Your zorst bore is 2.5 inches ( standard as 8v ) and 16v bore is 2 3/4 inches.

I actually have a 16v box on mine mated with a coupler all put together by Powerflow. This includes an additional holding bracket but it depends on what type of backbox you want.

If you just want a standard perfomance backbox, just buy any 8v GTI section, swivel the bracket and you will have it fitted in minutes.

( you may need to cut out some of your rear valance if fitting twin pipes )
