Doors frozen shut
« on: 12 December 2017, 15:04 »
This morning I couldn't get into my Polo as the doors were frozen shut, nearly broke a nail trying

How can I stop it from happening?

I'm not suggesting that this might work for you, but coming into winter, I give all my door seals a good clean and once they are completely dry, I rub a light smear of vaseline on them....a small dab of the stuff on the index finger goes a very long way. Works on both my cars and we get temps down around minus 20C.

Lock frozen or door frozen to frame?

If lock frozen, put your hand on the lock. This should thaw it (take your gloves off if wearing).
Use lithium grease to lubricate lock, no WD40 won't work.

If door is frozen to seals/frame then clean up and use silicone oil to lightly cover the rubber seals. Vaseline might do the same.

Only one way to find out. I've been using it for 11 harsh Bulgarian winters now, no problems. I was told about it after an old chap saw me struggling with my doors during my first winter over here. Rarely have a problem with a frozen lock, but when I do, this works for me....lean my arse against the lock and have a smoke for a few minutes...problem vanishes.
