Castrol Magnetec used by main dealer
« on: 11 October 2018, 13:41 »
I'm on fixed annual servicing and just had my second service carried out at 17K, surprised to see on invoice they used Castrol Magnetec, don't know exact spec , just states Synthetic.
Not overly concerned, but just wondered why they wouldn't use Quantum.
This is the second and last service on the service plan that was included (due to taking finance, which i paid straight off) so it was effectively free.
Next change will be in 12 months and around 6-7K.

Any thoughts on why Castrol? or concerns?

Ta.

They used to use Castrol a few years ago at my local dealer group. As long as it's VW approved then it makes no difference.
TCR, Pure Grey, DCC, Dynaudio and Climate Screen.

I thought Castrol was the right oil anyway, that's what they sell at my dealer and when I used to get my top up oil from Audi. But as mcmaddy says, so long as the oil meets the VW specification then it'll be fine.

Cheers all.

As i said i'm not concerned, more surprised is wasn't Quantum.

However I guess the reality is we have no idea what all they actually use, just what they say they use.

Quantum was made by castrol for VW for over a decade. Last year Fuchs started making quantum for them.

Also be careful with the term 'meets'. I always think of it  similar to ebay speak 'style'.
Meets simply meens its not being tested by vw approved labratories to their standard but also meens you have to take the makers word for it that it does actually meet the standard. Imo always look for the word approved and not the word meets on any oil you buy.
