ive found i have to control my urge to just shoot anything and everything and slow down a little and think about what i want to acheive
This is something I think is very important. For those who have started off taking photos on film, it's easier, because you always had a limit of 24 or 36 shots before your film ran out. So you had to think about it before firing the shutter.
Use the viewfinder, it does show you more or less what you're shooting. Put your eye to the viewfinder, and move the camera left, right, up, down, change your angle, crouch, step to the side, zoom in or out until you get a good shot.
You can of course (with no limits on shots) just take a photo from every position, but you need to understand what makes a shot good and why one angle on something is better than another angle on the same thing.
