Ben having a play about again this evening. Mainly messing about with shutter speeds and ISO settings so I can understand them a bit better.

for better results (IQ) over expose high ISO shots buy around 1/3 of a stop then pull the exposure back in camera raw, also check out exposing to the right (and left) to exploit the way the digital sensor captures a scene.

Lowering my ISO will help reduce noise right? And only really needs to be bumped up in low light conditions?

as a rule of thumb yes, but if you starting playing with camera raw then it's not always true

In terms of the f stop, increasing this will bring more into focus.

here's the pitfall with aperture, the larger the number the smaller the aperture, so when someone says a bigger aperture they normally mean a lower f number e.g. f/2 instead of f/4

a smaller aperture (smaller opening / bigger number) will bring more into focus / give you a greater depth of field

Whoa there tiger, youll need to go a bit slower than that!

I wasn't joking when i said I was a beginner :embarassed:!

everyone starts somewhere!

lowering the f stop will allow more light in so you can use a lower iso.

differnt cameras handle high iso differntly, for example my old d2h is a joke at anything over 800 iso

at the end of the day if its too dark for you to capture the image how you want it without using a tripod then you need to be using flash

Had a wander around Ventnor this evening.

Came home and went through the photos and went 'more of everything and double it', just for the hell

Don't think I touched this one

Thanks Shep / Ridge,

Im gonna try a similar shot again tonight with a lower ISO (400) and a lower f stop and see what I can come up with.

Thanks for the link too Shep - just what I am after. There is a group on Flickr too which meet up in my local area who are trying to organise a bit of a begginers course, so I am hoping to join in with them once I am back from my honeymoon and have some free time.

I love the challenges associated with shooting into the sun - it's a piece of p1ss to shoot away from it, but shooting into it, to capture the stunning views you get is quite tough
