Does anyone recognise these headlights ?
« on: 10 October 2018, 14:54 »
Hi,

New to forum, love the Golf GTi and will be a proud owner Saturday of a Carbon Steel Grey Golf GTi MK6. First GTi I have owned.

One thing I noticed when I went to look at it was the headlights were different to stock

Could someone tell me if these look OEM or Aftermarket

I want the light chaning back to the standard look, DRLs don't interest me

Would anyone be willing to swap for some stock halogen headlights

Thanks,

Lee

They are most certainly aftermarket. It's unusual the the previous owner changes the headlights, but not the tail lights.

Red Mk6 gone replaced with a white Mk7 which has gone too. Green Mk2 here to stay.

That's what I thought, unless they did change them and sold the LED tail lights ??

Previous owner was a woman with a small child, she had it 2 years. Could have been previous owner before her.

I want to replace them with standard lights, are they hard to get hold of ?

Thanks,

Lee

Two grey paint colours were the mk6 GTI/GTD;

- Carbon Grey (exclusive to the GTI and GTD)
- Steel Grey.

Colours are on page 24 in the brochure at the link below;

https://www.volkswagen.co.uk/assets/common/pdf/brochures/golf-vi-brochure.pdf

The car you’re buying is Steel Grey; Carbon Grey is a much darker colour. Steel Grey is quite a rare colour on a GTI - nice colour though, and the car looks very tidy.

It’s worth checking if the timing chain tensioner has been changed to the latest version as early versions are prone to failure, resulting in expensive repairs. Worth having a look at the ‘Timing Chain Tensioner Failure’ ‘sticky’ at the top of the mk6 forum board.

2020 Polo GTI Plus; Pure White, DSG (because they all are)
Gone but not forgotten;
2016 Polo GTI; Blue Silk
2011 mk6 Golf GTD; Carbon Grey
2007 mk5 Golf GT (2.0 170bhp TDI version); Deep Black Pearl
2002  mk4 Golf GTI (the 150 bhp diesel version); Deep Black Pearl

Thanks for that SRGTD

I've already had a look at the sticky as it is something I have considered

The amount that have failed at under 50k is concerning

The car was manufactured 5th May 2010 so should have the revised tensioner, I stayed away from any 09 models and did some research on this forum first

Dealer said chain needs changing at 120k or 10 years, whichever comes first. I thought it was 100k myself.

Either way replacing them aftermarket lights and getting the chain done is my main priority

I have had a 2005 1.2 Vauxhall Corsa for 10 years so obviously driving this car is luxury to me  :grin:

I had a bad experience with a timing chain on that so i have learnt my lesson

How much is it to get timing chain done with water pump and tensioner etc. at VW v Indi ?

I used an Indi to replace my chain on my  Corsa earlier than it should because the tensioner started to fail at 50k, but the mechanic broke the water pump, he tightened the bolt too hard and cracked it. Then he filled it with bathroom silicone and eventually this got into the cylinder head and killed it.

If VW charge say £500 i'd get it done there but if it's £1000 i'll go Indi

I think there were three versions of the timing chain tensioner during the life of the mk6 GTI, which suggests there were still issues with the second version/first revision. Post #527 (page 53) in the sticky gives the approximate dates that the revised versions were fitted. If these dates are accurate, your car may have the first generation tensioner fitted.

There are some tensioner failures on 2010 GTI’s that have been reported in the ‘sticky’ (a quick scan of the later pages in the sticky and there’s a couple of posts of failures on 2010 cars on page 59).

Forum member seabrook132 has theirs changed at an independent VW specialist in December last year. In post no. 608 in the sticky (on page 61 of the sticky), they’ve itemised the parts and labour costs, which should give you a fairly good indication of current cost as this was less than a year ago. .

Info on revisions and what happens is on page 1 of the thread in my post. No one seems to read before asking the same questions time and again page after page in that thread.

Thank you for your recent contact to Volkswagen UK.

I have spoken to our Technical Support Team regarding your enquiry. They have advised that due to your vehicle having a timing chain as opposed to a timing belt, no service replacement is required.

The timing belt is a vital and hard-working engine component. It regulates the opening and closing of the engine inlet and outlet valves. Air intake, fuel injection, compression, ignition and exhaust must occur within a precise sequence in each cylinder to ensure smooth running of the engine. The timing belt is instrumental in making this happen. Timing chains are used in the same way as timing belts. They drive the camshafts and synchronise the opening and closing of the valves in the cylinders.

Most cars have timing belts fitted instead of chains. Belts are generally quieter, smoother, lighter and do not need to be lubricated. Timing chains are considered more durable and are maintenance free. The timing belt is one of the hardest working parts in your engine. The timing belt is made from a rubber based compound that deteriorates over time. As a result, Volkswagen UK recommends that it should be replaced at the required time/distance interval to protect the engine against serious damage. Unlike timing belts, there are no change intervals for timing chains, which are expected to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

I hope this information proves useful.

Thank you for contacting Volkswagen UK.

Kind regards
