Took off the wheels, cleaned and protected, also calipers. Fitted red alloy valve caps and aligned VW caps. Used homemade jack adapter which worked very well with no danger of bending or slipping. A hockey puck with a slot cut in it screwed to two squares of ply. The lower one with a hole cut in it for the jack pad. Found the front gaiters are hanging loose.

And could you reattached the gaiters yourself? Pictures?

The bottom of the gaiter bellows has a square channel that looks like it's for some kind of clip. If the bellows is pulled down it pops sweetly over the flange in the picture but for the life of me I can't see how one would fasten it. I tried to cable tie the bellows below the bright metal bit on the leg in the picture but couldn't  tighten it. It would have been an awful bodge anyway. I'm taking it back to the dealer. I'm wondering what VW's procedure is and whether it says to re-fix it? All sorts of crap will get into the shock absorber if not!

Got caught doing 58 in a 40 (100m into a 40 zone from a 60)... 3 points & fine (I know its a fair cop!)

But on the plus side the journey after was the first time I passed 50mpg (GTD)

On looking closer the flange should unclip from the channel in the leg, push up, fasten bellows and push back down into channel. I'm not doing it in case I break it!
