Title: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: DanChave on 15 July 2012, 22:36
It's about time I introduced my new car :)

It's a 1996, three door MK3 Golf GTI 16V in Flash Red! I bought it a little while back, but I have waiting until I had put my own stamp on it a bit!

When I first go her back!

Me too! I have the alloys to refurb and a pair of Recaro fronts to re-trim next, then it will be a decent stainless exhaust :)

It's coming along nicely that's for sure. Good to see the hot air trick worked for you too, did you use any bumper afterwards? I found it just helps it pop that little bit more.

I haven't yet! Not sure I will either, because a lot of bumper care products have silicones in and I wouldn't want anything effecting my paintwork on customers cars :/ silicone reactions are horrible!

Loved my Mk3 16v, to bits actually. Have a lot still lying around so PM me if you need a s/s magnex or some deep dish wheels etc

Looks like a good basis and it's far easier to look after something than to restore it.

Finally finished the E30 I have been working on for the past month!

How it started

Now its all finished :)

And a small update on the 16v, I removed the Golf GTI and 16v badges from the rear lamp finisher and gave the quarter panel a flat and polish whilst I was at it!

Today I also picked up an alternator, belt, bracket and bolts from a GTI 8v so I can delete the roller tensioner to clean up the bay a little bit! It also mounts the alternator lower allowing for ITB clearance at a later date ;)

Next weekend I will be changing the cam belt and tensioner and getting the timing done, so I will change the alternator at the same time! More updates to follow....................

Excellent job on the E30! Currently helping my friend restore an alpine white 316 but the going is slow due to the golf's getting our attention.

Cheers man, I do love an e30, the cab was the 325i. The only thing letting it down in my eyes is its an auto, but that's personal preference I guess! Ahh, you picked up on that eh ;) it a dream at the moment, but I se no harm in doing things to make it more of a reality in the future :)

I started thinking about when I change the cam belt, tensioner and the alternator at the weekend and decided I should clean up and paint a few items along the way.

So yesterday I started removing stuff to begin cleaning, and I got a bit carried away :) I removed both inlet manifold sections and throttle body, removed the rocker cover, the air box and associated hoses, the PCV valve and the ISV and block connector bracket :) I then started giving everything a good clean before I headed up to Exeter TPS to pic up my new cam belt and tensioner. Whilst I was there I ordered up new inlet manifold gaskets, throttle body gasket spark lead separator clips and a new dipstick.

When I got back I chucked all the parts I had removed in the dishwasher cos my parents are away for the week ;) Didn't help overly though lol!

Some pics of my progress!

Hopefully the weather will be good tomorrow and I can drain the oil and coolant, strip off the heat shield and manifold brackets, remove the coolant housing and the sump :) Then all the fixings will be sent off to LMR to get matched up with polished counterparts!

The question then will be what colour to paint everything?!

Feel free to give suggestions or if anyone knows of anything that can be deleted, moved or modified to clean the 'bay up whilst I am at this stage, let me know.

Dan

Cheers mate! I am toying with the idea of everything black apart from the head (just cleaned) with the manifold and sump either white or red.

OR

as before but rocker cover white as well as inlet and sump

OR

as before but rocker cover BBS gold, inlet, alternator and bracket and sump white...........................

Decisions decisions lol

Also, where can I acquire one of those battery bags....

What would you do red and what would you do black? The battery bags are genuine items so The Dealership or TPS I guess :)

On a side note, I have bought a new splitter.......

Black inlet manifold going over the engine with black VW badge, with 'DOHC 16V' and the VW badge depressed areas red to highlight them.
Red rocker cover, the black manifold partially covering it will tone it down and make it less 'in ya face', having 3 clean red strips peeping up at you between each inlet.
Obviously keep all black plastics black and treated...I wouldn't go too mad with the red or it'll be overpowering (bear in mind your entire bay is red).
I think that would look fresh and crisp.

You could also throw some polishing into the mix perhaps, though again, less is more! But I'm quite conservative when it comes to modding.
Thanks for the info on the bag, I'll keep my eye out.

That does sound sweet! I'll have to have a real good think about it. All the bolts will be polished, but that's about it I reckon.

Yesterday I got a lot more of the engine bay stripped and the bolts bagged up ready to be sent off :)

I removed the front bumper, grill and the slam panel, removed the oil cooler and the oil filter housing, removed all the wiring etc from the drivers side chassis leg, cleaned and degreased everything on that side and then refitted it again :)

A few progress pics.

Today I will get the sump, fly wheel bracket, power steering pump and the front engine mount/starter motor off and all the bolts bagged up and sent off :)

This morning I also picked up my VHT paint for the main block and the paint for the rocker cover, inlet gasket and ancillaries ;)

So, on Saturday I got the rest of the engine components off and all the bolts bagged up and ready for posting today :) I also checked the oil feed in the sump, cleaned all the crap out of it and refitted it.

Whilst stripping everything down I noticed there was a hairline crack in my exhaust manifold :/ Luckily I found a second hand stainless 4-2-1 selling on EBay, and I'm glad to say that at 3am this morning I won it :) I also bought some heat wrap so I can do away with the heat shield, I bought enough to wrap the whole system so as I replace the sections with stainless, decat etc I will remove any heat shields and wrap those parts to! May not be for a while though, I have already spent twice as much as I wanted to lol!

Progress pics!

New Cam Belt and Tensioner fitted.

I am going to delete the carbon canister and pump and relocate the powersteering bottle as well.

My mission today is to get the exhaust manifold off, wish me luck lol!

Good luck with that mate! If you remove the downpipe at the bottom, you should be able to tilt the engine forward, and create a bit more space for yourself to take the mani off.

Cheers for the tip Sean! I wanna get it off now, but the engine is only on two engine mounts as it is lol! I'm gonna have to wait for a week or so until all my bolts arrive back :( Off to TPS in a minute to order the rest of the 'o' rings and gaskets I need :)

Once the engine is all back together, I will be looking to take the gearbox out, clean, paint, replace bolts etc so I guess it makes sense to lighten the flywheel at the same time :) I have heard of people doing this, but what exactly is the benefit?

Less inertia, so quicker revving basically. Some say you loose torque, but I've never seen any evidence to suggest this. I had it done on my mk3 8v, and I thought it was great! People wouldn't do it unless it was benificial. Worth renewing the clutch seeing as the GB is off, and flywheel out too mate.

Cool, when the gearbox comes off I'll do that then! I am going to consentrate on getting the engine back together and the car back on the road, let my funds build back up again and then tackle the gearbox :)

Cant remember exactly, but standard weight is around 11kg. Mine came back at just over 6kg iirc. You dont need to ask him for a specific weight, he will bring it down to what he considers a safe weight which from what Ive heard is usually between 5.5 & 6.5 kg.

So, after loading up the exhaust manifold bolts up with WD40 for a couple of days, and managed to crack them all off apart from one! The remaining one you can only reach with a 12mm spanner, and out of my set, that is the one I have lost

On a good note, I managed to get the block prep'd and painted today :)

Prep'd and Kurust'd

Sure :)

I would have liked to strip it right down and paint the whole block but that was going to far for my first engine strip and paint. The front and gearbox side is all you really see so I figured that would do for now.

Now you see i'm a bit funny about gold and what it goes with, I had a green mk1 once and detailed in green but quickly regretted it..

I'm not convinced yet but when it's all fitted you may sway me.

Don't worry bud, if it turns out bad I'll just keep the bonnet shut ;)

There is method in my madness though, and I'm usually pretty good with colour schemes and what goes with what. Gold on red can look awful but I think how I'm gonna do it should look great :)

Plus, the engine will eventually be making its way into a MK1 of some description so all the paintwork is also done with that in mind.......

So, after waiting for just over three weeks, my stainless manifold finally turned up!

I will be wrapping it all up in heat wrap so I can ditch all the oem heat proofing :) Is it wrong that I want to polish it all up before I fit it??

A pic of the FK AK Streets I picked up for a bargain price

I reckon they should clean up really well, I'm tempted to paint up the springs...........

More bargain hunting ensued today. I took a four hour round trip this morning, down to Perranporth in Cornwall to have a look at a Highline VR! Needless to say, I came away with the whole leather interior, including leather seats, door cards and rear quarter cards, the black ABC pillars, a full set of colour coded side moulding, the ABS warning light loom and the ABS ECU for a very handsome price :)

Pics to follow.....

Cheers bud! I believe they are denser to cope with the extra weight of the VR, which makes them a great OEM performance upgrade for 8v's and 16v's :) I will be replacing all the bushes with VR6 counterparts!

Post 95(?) cars all use vr6 spec top mounts. ETKA parts numbers are all the same for the later cars. Found this out when I did my suspension as I bought my top mounts from a dealer.

Bit of an update!

Yesterday I managed to get my VR Highline Leather doorcards,

rear bench

and black ABC pillars fitted and have a general tidy up of the inside!

I also fitted my colour coded and delocked handles at the same time ;)

The car was starting to look like a parts bin lol.....

Doorcards

Before

After

Although I have had a few sets of leather seats, I have never had a set of leather doorcards fitted! So this upgrade makes me really happy! I finally have a full leather interior :)

Handles fitted

Before

After

I really think this mod cleans everything up really nicely.

Hopefully if the weather holds out, I can finally crack on with painting the sump, oil filter housing, Alternator and bracket and the lower and top manifold!

The last of my new bolts finally arrived at TPS today! Typically, the last to arrive were the front engine mount/starter bolts, which are the first to go back on!

New bolts all bagged up and ready to go :)

Front engine mount and starter motor refitted.

I also refitted the Crank/Speed sensor, Knock and anti Knock sensors, main block loom bracket, side of head coolant flange and front of head coolant flange. All were torqued up to the VW Tech Manual specification, all with stainless steel mirror polished bolts and new genuine gaskets.

Hopefully more in the next few days :)

Indeed man! It's well worth it. I have been after an ABF engine for a long time, so I intend to look after it :)

Looking good. Noticed you have the shifter tower apart. Would be a good opportunity to swap it out for an 02j setup.

That's the mk4 shifter etc correct? I intend to do that in the new year when the gearbox comes out to have bolts replaced, clutch checked, flywheel lightened and balanced and give the gearbox housing a lick of paint :)

UPDATE!

I'm struggling with getting the exhaust manifold off at the moment, so I left that before I just set fire to the damn car and set about painting the few engine pieces still left to be painted!

I took the alternator to Bill Richards in Newton Abbot to split it down and give it the once over. In the mean time I painted up the pulley and casings :)

Degreased

Super stoked to get that lot out of the way!

Hopefully, this week I will get my Alternator back from being rebuilt and get everything else fitted and some fluids in her. Fingers crossed, she should be back on the road by next weekend :D :D :D

Oh, and a cheeky test fit of how the Inlet Manifold will look..............

Got a bit more done today :)

First I got the Vain Pump and brackets, plus the lower cambelt cover and the bottom pulley fitted.

Got a fair bit more done today! Didn't get any pics, it got dark before I had time to do so. However, if anyone has any idea where these earths go....

And what, if anything, goes into the hole located just above the coolant flange..........

Help would be great as I hope to get the thing started tomorrow!

The hole should have a plug in it with a copper washer.

Earths should bolt to the block. Behind coolant flange.

Right, so! I have finally had time to carry on with the beast :) After trying in vain to get the car to idle, I thought I would check all the wiring in the engine bay! Thanks to Mike_25th on SWdubs.co.uk, he sent me a copy of the Autodata info for my car so I had values to check against! after checking everything else, I checked the loom section going round the back on the block to the Throttle Potentiometer Switch, Throttle Closed Switch and the unused heater plug. To put it simply, the three wires on the TPS plug are literally falling apart lol! How I missed that the first time I checked the loom I have NO idea!

Now if that doesn't sort the idle problem then I don't know what will!

I have been recommended an auto electrician called John Harrop, based in Exeter, so he is booked in to come and sort the wiring out 9:00am on Thursday morning! :D

I'm off to go and wash the car in the rain!

Oh it really isn't at the moment bud! I took some pics the other day and the content is just shameful! I was gonna give the poor thing a wash today, only to find out our builder had nicked my bucket to mix cement! I did go out to Asda and pic up another bucket, but by then it was too late to get on it.

Tomorrow I'm off to TPS to pic up an oil sensor and some new bolts for the shifter tower, then when I get back I will refit the slam panel properly and refit the bonnet catch, give it a thorough wash and give the insides a good clean before the auto electrician arrives sometime after 2:00pm! Providing the car is fixed, I'm hoping to get it along to its first meet under my ownership tomorrow evening for the SOS meet in Newton Abbot :)

Didn't make it off the driveway :( after repairing the loom section, the auto electrician put it on his fault code reader and it threw up code 00519 which is MAP sensor no signal/ no positive pressure. Now I know that all the vacuum lines are in good condition and not blocked, because they were all replaced with 3m I'D silicone lines, there can't be an air leak from the manifolds because all the gaskets were replaced and everything was torqued down to vw spec, which means the MAP sensor its self needs checking. Seeing as at sensor is in the ECU housing and soldered to the motherboard, its looking like I need to get the ECU checked and fixed!

Finally got all the paperwork, x-rays and scans from the hospital when I had the accident though, and sent it all off to the company that is dealing with my accident. I also finally have my appointment with the specialist next Friday too, so fingers crossed I will have a bit of spare cash before Spring!
I'm either gonna get a v.good condition Corrado VR6, and if I have money spare I'll supercharge it. Or buy one as a non runner, and do an R32 conversion.

So, I was just about to take my ecu to get checked when Dan from Devon Dub Shack messaged me back about having an ecu I could have :) I managed to pick one up today for £20! Now I just need to find someone with VCDS as I only have the lite version and mine won't let me save the adaption :( had a bit of a panic when.I discovered it was series 1 immob as you need the skc code from the plastic tags that come with the keys from the dealership and I had never noticed anything like that when I bought the car! Low and behold, both the original tags are with the spare key :) so, one step forward, and hopefully not two steps back lol!

That was lucky!

Hopefully you can get it sorted now mate. Does Dan not have VCDS then?

The accident I'm referring to is the one where my Corrado 16v was written off thanks to a nice fellow in a Range Rover deciding he doesn't do stopping for traffic lights on Outland/Tavistock road. We were waiting at the lights, and he ploughed into the back of the bloke behind me, who hit me, I hit the bloke in front, and he hit a woman in front of him! It was a pretty big shunt tbf! He was travelling in excess of 40mph in that great big car! As a result, I have chips to two vertebrae, and an acute fracture of one. Still have trouble with it now, and I'm not exaggerating it for a claim either!
I sold the car on to Dan at DDS for stripping. It still drove ok, but front and rear end were smashed in, and quarter panels were buckled so it was beyond saving.

Anyway, onwards and upwards and all that!

It is indeed all back together! No pics as of yet as half the loom is unwrapped and I won't be wrapping it back up until the engine is properly running. There is plenty to do still, the gearbox is next, I have already started collecting all the bolts to replace the old ones, and whilst its out I will be getting the flywheel lightened and balanced :) there is also loads of other smaller jobs that I may do in between, like relocating the PAS fluid bottle, battery, etc, deleting the carbon canister and pump, ripping out the ABS, loom tuck, subframe, front support and wishbones refurbished, the list goes on.......... But for now I just want to get it back on the road and enjoy it for a bit and do some little bits! But yeah, pics soon I hope :)

So, got the new ECU coded to the immobilizer, the engine still won't idle, but at least I don't have a MAP sensor fault anymore! There is now voltage at the ISV plug and BOTH the ISVs show 4ohms resistance, which should mean they work. However, neither make any difference to the running if the car. If I slightly pul out the ISV from the bung, and manually control the amount of air going into the inlet I can get the car to idle, so I'm back down to DDS tomorrow to get a handfull of ISVs to try!

Did car run ok before stripdown?

Post by: DanChave on 11 January 2013, 22:52
All vac line have been replaced with silicone 3mm ID lines, plus I have checked the small section inside the ECU. Basically, I turn the ignition and the engine fires up but then will stall straight away unless I keep the throttle open. Then it's fine and free revving until I take my foot off the accelerator pedal, then the engine cuts out again!

The engine didn't do this prior to being stripped down, however it did suffer with stuttering and stalling when reaching temp. From what I have read, both these problems are symptomatic of a stuck ISV either stuck closed (not enough air = stalling when cold) or stuck open (too much air = stalling when hot) what do you think man?
Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: tshirt2k on 12 January 2013, 00:12
Not necessarily. Have you checked temp sender? Clean the isv with carb cleaner. It should buzz with ignition on I think. When warming up coolant temp sender controls mixture and it should add more fuel to aid cold running.
Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: DanChave on 12 January 2013, 08:48
The temp sensor has also been replaced, albeit with a GSF item. (Before I knew of TPS) I have used GSF temp sensors on previous mk3's and they have been fine. The oringinal ISV used to buzz, however, thinking it was stuck open and causing the stalling at high temp, I ran a live and earth straight from the battery, try and free it, and I could hear it clicking in and out, but it never buzzed since, so I think I fried that one :/ the second one was bought from eBay and has never buzzed either. I have read though, it doesn't necessarily have to make a buzzing you can hear to be working, and ISVs taken straight from working cars won't necessarily work either! One guy I spoke to said he tried FOUR different ISVs, all supposedly working, and only one worked in his car even though two worked in another car he tried them in!
Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: tshirt2k on 12 January 2013, 11:26
The ISVs are pwm controlled so you shouldn't be just connecting power to them like that.

You can check there's power to them by testing voltage between the black wire and earth. That wire is fused at the fuseboard. The white wire goes to the ecu to use as the control.

If the isv was stuck open, you would have a very high idle. Have you checked the operation of the idle switch on the TB? Are the wires going to the TPS in good nick?
Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: DanChave on 12 January 2013, 17:04
Yeah well I know that now  :lipsrsealed: there is voltage at the ISV plug, checked the throttle switch and TPS wires, all three of the TPS wires were knackered and I had new sections soldered in. Picked up another ISV today, fitted it and still no difference. Then we adjusted the throttle cable so the it was as tight as it could be with it still depressing the switch, and we got it to idle, although now it hunts between 400 and 1000 before settling on 900 rpm on start up and it will dip down to 400rpm when you take your foot off the accelerator until the engine is over 2000rpm then it is quite stable. As soon as youare moving slowely and there is heavy braking will it start hunting again and occasionally enough to stall!

Is there air leaks or blocked pipes somewhere?

What's the throttle body like? Clean?

Is all the carbon canister still there? Pull an air pipe off and see how it runs then. Should idle stupidly high but try it.

Just seen the last post. If you are adjusting the cable so it idles it's only masking the issue. It should idle with no throttle cable.

I'll have a look at the carbon canister tomorrow. I know adjusting the cable will mask the problem, but at least it is now drivable! I have a pair of ISVs soaking in petrol overnight, I will try them both tomorrow as I'm pretty sure it is an ISV problem. Once the car was up to temp it would idle fine, and pulling the breather hose off from the ISV to the airbox and blocking it would starve the engine, which the other two wouldn't do. I guess they are both stuck closed whereas this one is a little bit open but stuck.

TB is clean as a whistle and all the breather pipes have been checked for splits and blockages and all the vac lines have Been replaced with 3mm ID silicone hoses.

Is the distributor timing bang on? Unlikely but could be possible.

Try pull the vaccuum pipe off the carbon canister. Should idle high.

So, the temperature dropped to 8deg last night and the car wouldn't fire up. Tried again this morning, with both the ISVs that had been soaking in petrol all night and still wouldn't fire up! I have Lloyds TSB Platinum membership with the AA which includes Home Start, so they'll be hear in an hour and a half. Let's see what they say.............

It sounds like its something you have done in the strip down if it ran before, be it that it ran like a dog. Id triple check everything make sure all your earths are good cables are all in good condition with no wires hanging on to plugs for dear life behind the rubber boots. Seems ashame after all the work you have put in. Wouldnt hold much faith in the AA but you never know! Also all the ISv's iv seen all buzz. Good luck

Have you checked the fuses? I know it sounds silly but I had a crank sensor crack it's wiring from old age which stopped the car idling, and it blew the engine management fuse. It still wouldn't run properly after I fitted a new crank sensor and I tried 3 different ISVs with no difference - turned out after hours of chin scratching and swearing to be the engine management fuse!

Post by: DanChave on 13 January 2013, 12:48
Well the AA guy turned up, and turns out he is a BIG VW fan, albeit of the aircooled variety lol! He diagnosed it as a faulty coil pack, as the spark was intermittent at best straight from the coil and would struggle to get a spark at the plugs, but the dizzy cap would show spark. I'll be on the phone to TPS first thing in the morning!

I have checked all the fuses, all the wiring has been checked and the wiring that needed it was repaired.

You can prove the coil is faulty be measuring resistances.
Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: DanChave on 13 January 2013, 20:06
The resistances from the coil pack its self is pins 1-2 is
03.8, 1-3 is 01.5 and pins 2-3 is 04.4............. Does this sound right? I have some autodata but I don't have the resistance values for the coil pack.

They have to be above 2500Ω to be any good. I have tested nearly new ones that were that low.

I didn't know about those hidden pins! Resistance between 1 and 15 is 00.0 and resistance between 1 or 15 and high tension pin is 03.4. That's all on the 200k ohms setting. Pretty buggered then?
Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: tshirt2k on 13 January 2013, 20:48
200k range is too high. try a lower one like 20k

3.4k looks good. use a much lower on between 1 & 15
Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: DanChave on 13 January 2013, 20:59
Ok, so pin 1and 15 show 00.7 on the 200 (beeping) setting. And 03.4 on the 20k setting for high tension and 1or 15. This would seem to suggest the coil was ok? Thing is, you could say the sane about my 3 ISVs I have, yet none of them buzz or appear to work :(

So, I grabbed an ISV from Dan at DDS and soaked the other two in petrol over night. The ISV from DDS didn't seem to make any difference until the car was up to temp, then it would idle so we adjusted the throttle cable to leave the throttle body open a tiny bit to aid cold starting until I find a fully working ISV and TAX'd the thing!

I enjoyed a few hours driving the beast around and was fully stoked to have it back on the road, until I went to drive the car that evening. The damn thing wouldn't fire up! Just DA DA DA DA DA and wouldn't catch. I was gutted. I left it until the morning and had another try and a bit of a look around. Nothing :(

I have AA with home start linked to my LLoyds account so I gave them a ring to get a guy out. Short of the long being he diagnosed a duff amplifier on the coil pack. Great. Today I picked up a coil pack from the scrap yard in newton and headed back to Dan's and picked up another two coil packs, two fuel pump relays and an ECU relay. Tried them all when I got home and none of them made any difference!

Tomorrow once I finish work, I'll try the coil pack out of my dads MK3 just to make sure, but I think the chance that I have picked up three coil packs, all with resistances within tolerances, and all three being broken is pretty unlikely.

the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel, which is taking the MK3 to the Mega Meet on the 27th, is starting to fade :(

Finally some real progress made! The car is now idling, turns out dickhead here was counting the fuses from the wrong side so when I checked fuse 15 it wasn't actually 15! lol, 15 was blown, ISV started working again, hey presto! Idling again! Now though, I'm back to having juddering around 2500-4000 RPM :/ however, this time, with the Crank Sensor replaced and everything else I have done to the engine, I'm pretty sure its down to the crappy HT leads fitted by the previous owner! Hopefully a mate will pop down in the next few days to let me try the leads from his car so I know for sure before buying a set for myself :)

I also fitted my Joey Modded CL headlights I kept from my old MK3.

Haha, yeah man! I'll get him running right eventually. At the moment I can only use him on short journeys around town etc with no heavy revving else he throws a hissy fit at me and starts bucking all over the place lol! Its a sensor or wiring fault, as the timing is bang on and the coil and leads all have great resistance. VagCom threw up a 00513 Engine Speed Sensor Fault (G28) Inplausable Signal, which relates to the Crank/Speed Sensor I have already replaced with a genuine item. It is possible that it has come loose, however, so the engine mount needs to come back off so I can check out what's going on with that.

Yet another set back for getting my coilovers and different set of alloys on there lol!

It's all good fun though, and I'm learning a lot all the time :)

Engine bay pretty much looks like this at the moment.

Then this happened......

Which resulted in this!

That's all for today, I have left the front top mount bolts soaking in WD40 and gave the rear calliper carrier bolts a good squirt as well! Hopefully tomorrow I can get the  front coilovers on and have a look at the rear camber situation! I will be using washers for the meantime so I can work out exactly how many degrees I want to run. Then I will get some camber shims for when the beam is stripped down, powdercoated and re bushed :)

Title: Re: DanChave's Flash Red GTI 16V. Engine strip, clean and paint!
Post by: DanChave on 17 August 2013, 18:19
So, I have been cracking on with a few bits. I have test fitted the splits, played about with camber and started cleaning up the engine bay a bit more in preparation for what's to come over the Winter ;)

On test fitting the wheels, I found out they poked around 20mm all round :/ although they were built for a Mk3, the car had rolled and pulled arches to fit the wheels! I want to keep the original swage lines of the arches and just heavily roll the lips, so some nice stretch and lots of camber is on the cards :D

Next was to start to work out exactly how much camber I will need to run! Starting with the rear, the rear hub assembly was stripped and washers used to mock up the amount of camber to get the lips in line with the arch. In the end, I used 5 washers on the front Lower stub axle bolt and four washers on the rear lower bolt. I have ordered a camber measurement tool so I can work out exactly how many degrees of negative camber I have and weather I will get a plate made up or use camber shims.

Next was to have a play with the front and it soon became clear that the natural camber adjustment on the front hub wasn't going to be enough, so I have ordered up a pair of camber top mounts and front camber bolts :)

Then, as there was nothing more I could do fitment wise, I started removing any unnecessary objects in the engine bay! I binned the carbon canister, associate pump and pipework, followed the clear vent pipe back to the fuel tank and cut it back just after the closest clip leaving it to vent to air like on the mk2's. I also started removing the ABS system and unwrapping the engine bay loom :) a few pics to follow when I get the time!

As they were built for a car with rolled and pulled arches, they poked about 20mm all round. Originally I had planned to face mount them to push them the 20mm back into the arch, but when they arrived I fell in love with the amount of dish and decided to make them fit with a combination of camber and arch rolling :)

The rear with 4/5 washers

Im just using the washers to get an idea of how much camber I need to add, when I have it how I want it I'll get a plate machined that accounts for the toe as well :)

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0221_zpsd9f29989.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0221_zpsd9f29989.jpg.html)

The most I could achieve was about -1.25, hopefully the top mounts will take care of the rest!

Then I started getting rid of all the unsightly nonsense in the engine bay!

I have ripped out this lot so far

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0195_zpsa868fe1b.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0195_zpsa868fe1b.jpg.html)

Leaving me with this

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0191_zps11a2fa9b.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0191_zps11a2fa9b.jpg.html)

Then this turned up!

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0189_zps5beefed2.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0189_zps5beefed2.jpg.html)

Fitted.

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0189_zps5beefed2.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0189_zps5beefed2.jpg.html)

Then finally to bring everything up to date, I started cleaning the splits up as the insides of the barrels looked like they had never been cleaned by the previous owner! Why you wouldn't look after a set of over £1200 worth of wheels not including tyres, I don't know! But saying that, I they had of been looked after, I wouldn't have got them for the price that I did

The barrels looked like this

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0244_zps8203682f.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0244_zps8203682f.jpg.html)

And then after six rinses with alloy wheel cleaner and scrubbing for about two hours  I ended up with this!

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0252_zpsbcb61895.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0252_zpsbcb61895.jpg.html)

I cant decide weather to get the barrels chrome powdercoated or mirror polished like they originally were..........

Anyways, that's the latest! The top mounts have arrived so next on the agenda will be to get a pair of flat top caps made for the front coilovers and see weather I can get the lip to touch the arch.......

I have been playing around with tyre profiles this morning and swapped the 195/45 Avon's on the fronts for 19/40 Pirelli's and chucked out the Federal 205/40's in favour for some Nankang 195/45's for a bit more stretch. I'm going to fit them to the car some time after Edition and see how I feel, but I might end up going for 165/45's on the front and 195/40's out back as I want to build the shell to sit on the lips :)

Bit of an update:

engine bay currently looks like this!

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0194_zps8f6689fd.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0194_zps8f6689fd.jpg.html)

Then I changed the ISV filter from this that came with the RamAir kit

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0253_zpsd42d1a52.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0253_zpsd42d1a52.jpg.html)

To one that looks a bit nicer :)

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0254_zps6aa62171.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0254_zps6aa62171.jpg.html)

Also these turned up!

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0255_zps870972f0.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0255_zps870972f0.jpg.html)

The quality is fantastic, I cant wait to fit them :D

Update time!

First this happened:

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0518_zps88fc7097.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0518_zps88fc7097.jpg.html)

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0517_zpsb9137a1d.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0517_zpsb9137a1d.jpg.html)

And then I fitted the Dibed Camber Top Mounts :)

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0521_zpsef96a321.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0521_zpsef96a321.jpg.html)

At the same time I took the front helper springs out and wound them right up so I have 100mm of thread to drop :)

(http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/aa457/DanChave/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0526_zps5bb3864d.jpg) (http://s1198.photobucket.com/user/DanChave/media/Flash%20Red%20MK3%20Golf%20GTI%2016V/DSC_0526_zps5bb3864d.jpg.html)

Hopefully next time, I'll get the rear beam correction plates on, and then I'm pretty much ready to start arch work :)

In the meantime, the poor GTI is sat like this lol :/
