Title: Summer Tyres for the GTI
Post by: am1w on 10 March 2011, 22:48
Summer tyres are designed for use during Spring, Summer and Autumn. Approximately March to October when temperatures are above 7 degrees C.
Thought I'd go hell-for-rubber with this thread.
So here goes, all you rubber lovers.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres have just been realeased and are the ones to purchase for 18" and 17" wheels, for now.

Review and write-up on the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres:

If you have 19" wheels then the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres should be considered.

Price 225/35 ZR19 88Y XL from Tyre Traders

Either size is suitable and won't affect the gearing. They have different Load Indices (LI) though this should not be an issue either. The narrower tyre will possibly be slightly quieter and is also slightly cheaper.

Some write-ups on the Michelin Pilot Super Sport tyres:

http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/The-Michelin-Pilot-Super-Sport-has-arrived.htm

Lesser tyres are only about £30 less per corner, so not worth it IMO.
I would also have a look at the Continental ContiSport 5P and the new Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 (when available) tyres. Might be a bit cheaper but probably not as good.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Another important feature to consider is the tyre's Rim Protection.
Some of the tyre companies are pretty poor with this. Continental comes to mind. We have these as summer tyres on our Mercedes. It is a good tyre which sadly happens not to protect the wheel rims suffeciently.

The Bridgestones have excellent rim protection. However, they are lousy in the wet, noisy and have a rough ride.

I have nearly decided to purchase the Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 2 tyres for my 18" Monza Shadows. At present it is shod with Bridgestone Potenza 050A tyres which I don't like for the reasons above. I've only done 3.2k miles and want to be rid of them.

My winter tyres are the Michelin Pilot Sport PA3s which are 'W' rated and cost an arm and a leg, about £246 per corner.

I will stay clear of Pirellis as I have no intention of aquaplaning in the wet. Every car I had with these caused this to happen. It was quite unnerving at the time.

It therefore seems to me that one can't go far wrong with tyres from Michelin, Goodyear and Continental, all of which are Premium Brands.

As an aside, there are 6 Premium Brands: Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Michelin and Pirelli (in alphabetical order).

In order of market share: Bridgestone, Michelin, Goodyear/Dunlop, Continental and Pirelli.

Continental have just launched the new ContiSportContact 5 and ContiSportContact 5 SUV, which replace the ContiSportContact 3. The ContiSportContact 5 sits just below the max performance SportContact 5P in the range.

Thanks Jim, Gilly for the positive comments.
Tyres make such a significant difference to the overall feel of the car and the safety of the drive especially in the wet.

Good right up Asker,

For those who are interested in "Summer Tyres for the GTI" then you're at the right place.

For those fed up of Asker sharing reviews of tyres for any season guess what... you shouldn't have clicked this topic.

Great write up Asker.

Some people don't realise how important good tyres are...

I'm not a great fan of my summer bridgestones but they are wearing well. 14K and about half worn. Contis when the time comes.

Nice one Asker

When do you get your new tyres fitted?

What are you doing with your old ones? They'll be "as new" won't they?

Thank you for all the positive reactions/comments.

There are just two little hurdles to overcome.
(1) Continental are revising their entire range of tyres soon, so I might just wait a couple of months for this.
(2) Really worried that changing tyres might involve damage to the Monza Shadows.

My Bridgestones have tread depths of 6.5mm front, 7.5mm rear. Evenly worn. I'll probably advertise them on ebay or on one of the forums. Don't know for how much yet, but they'll be attractively priced.

(1) Agreed

(2)If you're worried take date stamped photos. Or simply show the wheels to the tyre fitters beforehand.

Kwik fit have changed mine twice now, summer to winter and winter to summer.

They were most gentle.

Was going to change my winters over to the summer Bridges but noticed the weather forecast for the weekend is not great over in Cumbria which is where I am headed, so guess I will stick with them for the next week and decide on change over when I return home.

Noticed a huge great gouge in my monza tonight, don't remember feeling doing that, bit of a bummer anyone know of a decent fixer in North Yorkshire area?

Easily done. Where exactly is it? Along the rim? On the flat surface?
I am sure someone will come along with the info.

No rush Gizzy.
The Contis are excellent winter tyres, the main difference you'll notice is when cornering, the summer bridgestones are a bit sharper as you'd expect. Keep them on until Spring is official.

Sorry about the gouge, probably need a specialist wheel outfit.

Yeah I am sick about it as it is on the rim going down onto the flat so will be a pig of a job to get looking decent again.  God knows when it was done as you can normally feel something like that.

Thanks, yeah must admit I do like these tyres for the winter, so glad I got them and was able to make good use of them.  My car has only done 8,500 so plenty of tread on the Bridgestones yet, probably get them back on in time for Easter, surely the weather will be better by then.

Amanda:
There are a couple of companies that will be able to repair a machine finished alloy. They collect and deliver. Painted ones are easily repairable, Monza Shadows are not as they have a machined surface.
There are a couple of threads on the forum about this.
I'll try tomorrow to fish them out if I can.
Exonian might know a company and there are other persons on the forum in the know who have been in a similar situation to you.

Oh Amanda what have you done?
Did the same myself the other week and still sulking about it now!

I had a set of Monza IIs (so nearly identical in finish to the Shadows) refurbished on my first mk5. Damaged by previous owner I'll have you know!
I was advised at the time to get both wheels on the same axle done at the same time as the factory diamond cut rim was very had to match. At that time (probably 5 years ago now) there weren't many refurbishers who would touch polished faced alloys. Mine were done by Pristine, and they were very good. However the finish was not 100% like the original. I had all four done as they all had at least stone chips.
Things have moved on since then and Lepsons seem to be popular. Give gossa a shout if he's still dropping by occasionally as I seem to recall he had his Shadows done by Lepsons last year.

There's snow lying here right now, and last year we had 18 inches on 30th March.  I'm seeing temperatures above 7oC sometimes, but not by a lot and not every day by a long chalk.

It seems to me that the performance of winter tyres up to 10 or even 12 degrees isn't going to fall off by much, compared to the catastrophic fall-off of performance of the summer tyres when it's freezing.  I was very very glad I still had the winters on when I was driving home on Thursday - snow lying on ungritted roads, though to be fair a gritter did show up and I followed him for quite a few miles.

I'm waiting till after 1st April before I go back to summer tyres.

Rolfe.

Glad you are happy.

Today I saw a brand new Ford C Max Titanium at work. Sat in it and was very impressed by the fit and finish of the interior, the superb panel fit + paint finish. Though I must admit it: the interior was a touch bling. I liked it!

But what really impressed me were the Continental ContiSport 3 tyres. I have never ever seen such massive rim protection. Double than that on my Bridgestones. These Contis were on 17" wheels. These Conti 3s are most probably Ford specific, as the Conti 3s on our Mercedes C class has really very miserable rim protection. Very annoying I must admit.

Snoops:
It gets more embarrassing.
I went back to the C-Max again in my break to do some extra rim measurement (rimming??). +
Well, even though the Contis have this really massive rim protection, it is fundamentally flawed. The protection is too far away from the actual wheel rim. Not as effective as I first thought

Here are some pictures of Conti rim protection on the C-MAX. :nerd:

That does not look too bad to me. It would work if you brushed a kerb for example.
How low a profile are those as the wall protection may change with profile. If i ever go to 18s i would want as much protection as i could get.
Title: Re: Summer Tyres for the GTI
Post by: Exonian on 18 March 2011, 04:58
Asker, you are quite correct in your assumption that Conti 3s have varying rim protectors.
The ones I had on my mk5 GTI (and briefly on my mk6 too on my old 18'' BBSs) had mahoosive rim protectors.

If you look at this picture and your eyes are good enough or you've got a biggish screen to view them you can see the difference between the flush sitting Conti 2s on the rear and the tractor tyre like Conti 3s on the front axle.

The ones I've just fitted to my 19'' BBSs have much smaller rim protectors, and I mean MUCH smaller.
Title: Re: Summer Tyres for the GTI
Post by: am1w on 18 March 2011, 09:18
I see that Andy.
The pictures I took were of 50 profile rubber (tyres are 215/50 ZR17) on the C-Max and the Contis on our C class are 40 profile. The higher aspect ratios seem to have better rim protection. This is probably because, and I am guessing, there is not enough sidewall to accomodate this without affecting the tyre performance especially when a tyre wall squirms with hard cornering forces.

Rim protection will only do so much, you can still catch the alloy on a high curb if your not carefull.

If you're running 19s you can catch your alloy on a very low kerb whilst being careful. That was me 3 weeks ago and I wasn't even parking (white van man avoidance)

Hi guys
Quick question on Tyres.
I currently have the Continental Sport Contact 2 225/40 R18 92Y tyres on my Gti, but need to replace the front two.
I've seen the Sport Contact 3s at Kwik-fit for £135 fitted. Does this sound like a good deal?
Also, it says they're "Homologated for fitment to certain Mercedes cars." Does this mean they're only for Mercedes car or are they suitable for me?
Also, they say they'll charge extra for nitrogen refill and wheel alignment. Would I need these done at the same time?
Thanks

A bit of patience needed.
Thanks
Already read that thread, but did see that they're a bit cheaper at tyre traders with a mobile fitting which is probably better for me
How about my other questions?

Pity the thread is hidden away now and difficult to access!
Why not go for another make for the front like the Goodyear Eagle FI Asymmetric 2 tyres which have just been released and have had a good response from the press. Tyre Traders seem to be the cheapest. Unfortunately, they are temporarily out of stock at present.
Continental are bringing out a raft of new tyres. But when, is anyone's guess. Don't bother with the Conti 2 tyres as they are an old design, and the 3 is about to be replaced. The Conti 3s that you are talking about are MO labelled, which are Mercedes approved tyres. We've got these on our C Class. Your Golf could also wear them. But I'd go for the Goodyears instead.
All the best.

Here is another interesting Summer tyre review.
Still no comparative review for the Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 tyres.
Trust the Russians to measure rim protection.
I was right all along that the Bridgestones have the best at 5.5 mm, closely followed by the Continental 5P tyres at 5 mm.
Note also the tyre weights. The lightest being the Continental followed by the Pirelli.
Overall, the Continental 5P gets the nod here.

Reading some bumph from Continental earlier and an artical in Car which more or less confirmed my thoughts on Winter Tyre use in the summer and therefore all year round. Continental recommend Winter Tyres should be used in this country from October to April which makes it 7 months of the year. They also suggest that it is better to use Winter Tyres in the summer than Summer Tyres in the winter. Under such conditions, Winter Tyres wear less than Summer Tyres. On average, Winter Tyres perform better than Summer tyres for all year use.

Why is that cat chasing that pidgeon?

The new Continental SportContact 5 in 225/40 18 92Y XL is now available from mytyres. Could be a good one. Approximately £129.

Unfortunately, they are more often than not, out of stock.

Let's play devil's advocate.

The Continental SportContact 5 MO 225/40 R18 92Y is available now for £113.21 from Tyre Traders.
MO means Mercedes approved. It is the same as the non MO version and is approx £11 cheaper than that one.

Non MO version:

The Goodyear F1 Asymmetric 2 in 225/40 R18 92Y is available from Tyre Traders for £114.50 .

From my various contacts in the tyre industry, the Continental is the better tyre overall and is quieter than the Goodyear.

my 197 had sportcontact3 XL fitted and they're a great tyre.

haven't had a chance to test the bridgestones my car came from the factory with yet though.

only thing with continental is they don't seem to last as long as michelin etc but they're a brilliant summer tyre.

old thread revival but....

this months EVO has a tyre test and the sport contact 3 comes out the winner again.

he bridgesotne did well having best lap time, dry handling but wet handling was average and high road noise and rolling resistance let it down

the hankook came 2nd which was  surprise and goodyear 3rd.

when I'm due new rubber i will go for the conti's again unless i can get the bridgestones cheap.

I wonder why they tested the older Conti 3 as the Conti 5 has been out for a while now.

I am going to need tyres once I take the winters off, probably going to stick to Michelin as they have always worked well for me.
