HOW TO: Weighted shift rod
« on: 25 September 2005, 22:23 »
This has to be one of the easiest mods to do to a mk2 and can greatly improve the 'feel' of the gearchange.

all you need is a weighted shift rod from a mk3 golf or various SEAT's you may find in a scrap yard. there are plenty about so don't bother getting one from ebay as they only cost £11 plus vat from the main dealer so if you can't find one, or just want a new one it is part number 1H0 711 183.

it looks like this:

all you have to do is look down on top and to the rear of your gear box and you'll see a rod the same length but of a continuous diameter. it is held in place by two p-clips pushed through the ends. take these out then remove from the nylon bushes. replace with weighted mk3 item and push clips back on. simple as that!

one small thing to note, if you have a short shift kit you will have to bend the ends of the rod downwards to give clearance to other parts of the gearshift linkage.
