****.......FUEL PUMP PROBLEM HELP!!!.......****
« on: 08 October 2005, 23:57 »
(1982 Yplate GTi)

the problem is as above,

i have got the later fuse box and at the minute there is a cable which leads directly from the fuel pump straight to the box where it is touching the top pin of the fuel pump relay. so, the pump kicks in and "hums" on the 2nd turn of the key and then fires up.

the problem is though is because it is bridged it keeps pumping the petrol through which makes it run rich (it stinks!!!) and it drinks the juice. then after 20 to 30 minutes it starts to "pop" and dies. then it takes about 5 to 6 hours to settle before it will start again.

keep in mind i bought this car with that bridge not noticing it. a VW "specialist" (self claimed!) told me i needed a new fuel pump relay and fusebox. but when i came to fit this i still had/have no idea where the cable that is bridged is supposed to go!!!

ANY and i mean ANY help will be more than welcome.

thanks

Bren

Is it a 1600 GTi - I used to have one and the fuel pump always gave me trouble. Often on the 1600 models the fuel pump relay was bypassed - so the link might be a bypass link - which means that the fuel pump turns on on key position 2. Normally it should turn on when you crank the crank.

I dunno if its the same but when I was fault finding mine I found that the relay timer is driven by a black wire coming from distributor. This supply from this black wire was found to be intermitent. So I by passed it the relay - should not cause a problem.

Have u changed the relay? My relay had dry solder-joints. So I re-flowed the joints.

This POP - could it be described as a bang that sounds like its coming out of the airbox???

If so I had a similar problem which I traced back to the D.I.S. unit, it would run perfectly then bang a puff of smoke and the car wouldn't start, i'd disconnect the DIS and connect a spare one, turn the car over a couple of times then reconnect the proper DIS and the car worked fine, i never did work out why???

That cars gone now (RIP YDF700Y 12.8.1982 to 16.7.2003) and the problem went with it but i do still have the DIS if you're local and want to give it a try. (i'm just inside M25 nr dartford)

DIS unit? Excuse my ignorance but what does that stand for? Never heard of a DIS unit

Fuel pump running all the time is not a problem, its a constant pressure system so all surplus fuel should return to the tank. That alone should not make the car run rich. You have another problem that is causing it to run so rich that you can smell fuel all the time. Might even be a fuel leak from the return line :undecided:

DIS = Digital Idle Stabilisation, its a little black thing usually on the right side of the scuttle panel with a big connector that goes to the coil/dizzy

Is that not on later models? Thought the earlier K-Jets didn't have that, purely electro-mechanical...........I may be wrong, always willing to learn :undecided:

No its definately part of the k-jet set up , i dont know exactly how it works or what it really does but the name is quite suggestive

If you're going to be working on you car yourself i'd serioulsy recommend a haynes manual, they're only £10-£15 and theres loads of usefull stuff in there including really handy trouble shooter sections, torque wrench settings, details of any specialist tools needed to do any given job and lots of pictures & diagrams.  I always study mine well before tackling any job and have read it cover to cover, knowledge is power!!!

I dont think there is DIS unit on the 1600 GTi. I used to have one and I dont remeber seeing the DIS unit.

I have got a 1800 GTi now and it has got a DIS unit.

 Its there trust me!!! i've had 4 1600cc Gti's myself and have worked on several for mates  the difference between a Mk1 1800cc and a 1600cc is the stroke of the pistons, the injection system is exactly the same.  check the haynes manual

Are you sure you're not on about the ignition control unit? I think your terminology may be misleading me a little, but I think you're on about this little box (Mk2 I know but I think its the same thing):-
