1.34L Carb Wont idle at startup
« on: 12 March 2015, 11:23 »
When I first start my 1.3L Carbed Golf on a chilly morning the car wont hold revs and will stall if I dont give it any gas. I dont know if this is normal or I'm just being an idiot as this is my first carbed car. Is it time for a new carb?
Cheers 'en

The carb on your engine has a semi-automatic choke system.
To 'prime' it, push the accelerator pedal slowly to the floor and release it, before you try to start the engine.

Okay so I tried it and it didnt stall but it's still really rough and almost chokes. Would it be a case of turning up the idle flow on the carb?

Buy a can of carb cleaner and a pair of safety glasses.  Warm the engine up to full temperature, and maybe recruit an assistant to sit with his/her foot on the accelerator pedal to give it a boost if/when it bogs down. Then, with the lid off the airbox, give the carb a good hosing all over the top surface, and down the primary barrel (the one that has the choke flap at the top of it).

In case you're wondering about the safety glasses; carb cleaner bounced into eyeballs is extremely painful and potentially seriously damaging. Wonder how I know?

Decided to just get a new carb. Its just generally a bit sh!t as someone previously broke the spring the opens and closes the choke. Cheers anyway :)
