Newbie armrest retrofit in the GTI...help?
« on: 21 November 2010, 12:31 »
Hello everyone,

Obviously, this is my first post here, i am Addy located away in the middle east, Qatar, yes, a lot of English fellas here!

Recently got my GTI and enjoying it to the limit! here is a pic just as a Hi!

So far i have ordered white license lights from p2spec along with ultra white luminics bulbs for low and fogs, waiting for them to arrive!

The topic

Mine didn't come with an armrest or MDI, i am going to install only the arm rest for now and might do the MDI later.

This is what i have currently:

Where can i get the armrest for cheap? preferably with leather top, but i might do it locally otherwise.

Is there different versions with MDI and no MDI or are they all the same with AUX on front and MDI inside with the coin compartment thing?

Thank you and sorry for the long read!

Why would VW not provide these basic things (esp armrest) in a GTi spec vehicle?
I don't think which market/continent you're in would make a difference regarding an armrest !

Yes, it's really odd that they don't provide such a simple thing in Qatar..

Though it has everything from rear and front sensors, camera, ect..just missing this and MDI..

So far i have found it for 120 uk pounds at shopvolkswagen in UK.

I found out that all these have empty compartment where MDI should go with AUX inside.

I want to retrofit MDI as i am at it, but still use AUX, still looking o well..

Volkswagen Genuine Centre armrest
This practical central armrest between the driver’s

more comfortable. With integrated fold-up storage
compartment.
Additional parts may be required dependant on model, please speak to
a member of staff for full details.
Part number 5K0 061 123 82V £236.50

Expensive!

Jeez, thats alot.
I would take it back to VW and insist they fit one for free as its an intergral part of any basic vehicle, let alone a new GTi costing approx £25k.

Surely all their advertised GTi's have the armrest pictured in their mags etc, surely if you took it back they would fit one in and admit that they 'forgot' to install one..?

It seems a basic error and not something they would omit on purpose (i.e. an adidtional extra)?

It simply beggars belief that they can sell such a high priced car without something so essential for driver/passanger comfort.

Just had an idea.
Maybe the Arabs don't want to be separated from their mates by the centre armrest. They hold hands when they walk together, so they might want to hold hands (?) whilst driving. I am serious. :embarassed:

All golfs before 2011 in Qatar came without an arm rest,

Interesting comments haha

If anything, they should install a rocket launcher in place for the arab customers.
