Mk3 GTi starting fault
« on: 16 January 2018, 21:07 »
Hi Everyone! Just joined the forum. I have recently restored my wife's 1996 GTi which we have owned for nearly 12 years. For many of those years it has had an intermittent fault which I am struggling to nail down. It always fires first turn of the key, but occasionally it does not run for more than a couple of seconds. Sometimes it will start after 4 or 5 attempts, other times I have to leave it for maybe 10 minutes and then it starts first time. It does this mostly after being run, but sometimes from cold. Once started the car runs fine, never stalls or misfires. Fuel consumption is normal. I have just had the OBD checked and no faults are recorded. The car has had the crank sensor replaced, but it had the fault before and since. It is a 2L 8v ADY engine with 140K miles. Has anyone had this fault and cured it?
