GTI 150 turbo - Cam belt prices...
« on: 01 November 2009, 19:38 »
Hi,

I have been quoted both £325 + £400 for a new cambelt / tensioners / water pump for my 2003 Mk4...

Does anyone else think this is steep? I know there is a lot of labour involved but I have seen prices quoted on here of circa £250...

I am in Surrey so has anyone got any suggestions for decent garages in the area?

Need to know if that is inc parts or not and if it is, are they genuine or non gen parts?

£325 was a belt kit inc all parts - tensioners & water pump etc. Not VW parts but the garage said it was the same manufacturer - I have used him before and have no reason to doubt this.

£400 was (I think) genuine parts from a VW / Audi speacialist. Does it matter that much ? I know its an important part but a non-genuine part must be up to the job?

Any advice welcomed..

all parts on mine were non gen and cost about £180. It can take a good few hours to replace everything so I would say the £325 price is good

Hmmmm, Well I will have a look around for the genuine parts - at least that will probably save some money.

Unfortunately I don't know any mechanics who are up to changing the cambelt so I will just have to pay up then!

I went to see the guy in Bexleyheath that was recommended on the good guys page, and he quoted me £260 for the cambelt and waterpump incl. labour. He didnt say if these were genuine parts or not (I didnt ask mind u, duh). Does it really matter if it is not?

Buy cheap, buy twice. Unless the repro belt fails, then you buy a whole new engine. Don't d!ck about with non-genuine parts when it's something as critical as timing belts/tensioners.
