Heated seats problem
« on: 13 September 2004, 20:55 »
I have the M3 colour concept with heated seats in it and am getting juice to the actual seats but no warm bum?
Does anyone know if there are any std problems with heated seats like burnt out elements etc??.. might go towards solving this problem and with winter coming.. I would rather a tosted backside than a cold one.
Many thanks,

It is fairly common for the elements in the seats to fail on mk3s.
A friend of mine was a vw technition throughout the 90s and he remembers doing loads of replacement elements.

Unfortunately it will cost a lot to have repaired, unless you can do a diy job.

Sorry i can only give bad news and not help you more.  I will talk to my friend and ask how hard it is to replace the parts.

Saw my mate over the weekend.  He says the job is actually quite straight forward.

Remove the seat from the car

Seperate the backrest from the seat base

Remove the seat cover and foam to leave the bare seat frame

replace the heater elements and reasemble

The only difficult bit is replacing the seat cover (especially leather)  He says it is a nightmare trying to get it back on exactly right.

He says a DIY job is possible but allow lots of time for getting the covers back on and be prepared for lots of unsuccsessful attempts, frustration, finger injuries, general rage and of course lots of swearing :D
