i'd try clearing it and see if it comes back

can mean a faulty controller but most of the time its just a communication error between vagcom and the controller, so not important

I think when he says clearing it he means clear the fault on VAGCOM.

Is this the first time you have used Vagcom on this car?

A Vagcom ROM errom can be down to wrong software on the ECU Chip?

If you can read all the other controllers with vagcom and the ROM error keeps comming back then your remap software can be incorrect or currupt.  But dont take my word 100% yet.

I am 99.9% sure you have the wrong software in your ECU  :undecided:

The 1.8t ECUs have a few variants of hardware numbers and each hardware version has a few different software revisions. If you put the wrong software vervision on the ecu you will get a ROM error  "READ ONLY MEMORY" which is fixed inside a eeprom chip. The car will run and work but not 100% as the map areas will be wrong.

Whats your ECU HW number?  It should start with 0261********
