Title: Short shift mod Audi S3/TTS
Post by: mkviken on 15 October 2011, 18:14
Fitted my Audi s3 shifter arm today.

£27 from main dealer. Really pleased with it.

I hated the 1st-2nd and 2nd-3rd on my golf but now it's so much more precise and the 'clunky' feel has gone.

It took an hour to fit taking my time (mainly due to losing the circlip and having to remove the undertray and search for it inside the bumper!)

Otherwise it's very straight forward - airbox off, shift arm off, new one on and then reset the cables by putting the stick and box in service position etc.

This shows the old and new. The pivot point is about 10pm further in compared to standard GTI

I might try this one.

A step by step fitting guide would be good.

I modded the one on my Leon Cupra 1.8T just by drilling a hole closer in to the pivot point then fitted a nut and bolt. Also uprated the rubbish bush in the linkage to a copper one. Absolutely solid with around 2 inches of throw between gear changes.

Although didn't relise this is in Mk6 section so ignore me lol!!

I may move this to the maintenance and info section after a week or so so it does not get lost in the forum traffic.

Sounds an interesting mod.

yes the OEM bushes have lots of movement in them unfortunately so a better mod would be for solid bushings but as a quick fix this is a great mod

Did the same mod on my MK4 and it helped sharpen up the gear change a little

I was wondering if there was a mod for the newer cars so thanks :afro:

...

What do you mean put the box and stick in service position, I was wondering how to check the cables on my GTD? as the gear change is horrid now.

put the gearstick in between 2nd and neutral and lock in place with a 5.5mm drill bit and to lock the gearbox push down slightly on the shift arm and push the little locking rod (an L shaped type thing) into the gearbox

this locks the transmit ion in service position.

then pull back and twist the locking cable ends a few times to re set the cables and then take out of service position and it should be much better

I tout the Golf R and Rocco R had this so wondered if anyone had the VW part number, fancy OEM rather than putting my VWR one on for a change

Not sure what you meant wit the 5,5mm drill piece.

I locked my gearstick in with a drill bit, but it seemed to be in the wrong place as it was nowhere near a neutral position and after adjusting the cables at the box end, I coudn't get gears 1,3 and 5.

I removed the drill and faffed a bit with the cables. Seems pretty good, although I was doing a bit of enthusiastic driving and it made 3rd and 5th a bit hard to select under braking and a bit of cornering. I was trying out my xds after switching onto the highest setting.

It transformed the car, a bit like a fwd rally car I used to have with a proper lsd fitted.
