a mk IV with just leather and 18inch wheels is only £1k less that an basic S3......looking at both and not sure what to do. Currently got a 05 GTI .....both have their pros/cons.....time for some thinking! :smiley:

If it were me I'd be going for the Golf.
I used to drool over the S3 and it is a gorgeous looking car and no doubts performs beautifully too.
That was until the most obnoxious twit I've ever come across at my work got one. That has totally soured the car for me and I wouldn't have one in case I was in anyway associated with him. I'm not jumping on the Clarkson 'Audi drivers are cocks' bandwagon or suggesting he's representative of all S3 drivers but I cant help looking at an S3 and thinking about this tit :sad:
From what I've heard from other GTI to S3 drivers the S3 is in many ways more accomplished but doesn't have any fun about it. Never driven one so couldn't say myself.

Personally Id take the S3 just for the sake of a but of a change as MK6 is very similar.
Best advice I can give is to take both of them for a test drive. Some people have commented that the S3 can be a bit "boring" to drive compared to the GTI. How they came to this conclusion I dont know as I'm yet to have the pleasure of driving a newer shape S3. I think they are lovely cars and would love one after the GTI (need to wait for them to come down in price).
I wouldn't take power into account as for ROUGHLY 1ks worth of mods a GTI will keep up with an S3 (but then the S3 has "4WD").

If it were me I would have the GTi. My parents have a Sportback 2.0T S-Line and to be honest it's a bit too grown up for my liking. The GTi appeals to the younger set but the S3 and S-Line Audis seem to be driven by the 40's and over... (trying not to offend anyone!!).
The build quality of the Audi though is flawless. From what I have seen of the Mk6 it is now at the same build quality level.
The old S3 holds it's money well though over the Golf but whether the new models will follow suit is anyones guess!

yea, I' m waiting for a manual mk IV to come into my dealer so I can try it. The S3 was pretty impressive, if a little laggy compared to my GTI up to 3k revs...but then I guess that's the bigger turbo. The interior is lovely though..a little nicer than the new GTI's.

I don't think a new S3 is about to come out. The current A3 line up has only just been facelifted which means it will be around for another couple of years as you say...

There is a new A3 model due next year - which probably means like VW and the Golf - it will be another 9+ months until they bring out their sports model. My Audi dealer told me the first part of that!
I test drove the S3 a few weeks ago, and was dead keen on getting one. To be honest, I don't think its that nice a looking car, but the power and 4wd swayed me. I'm still waiting for my written off ED30 to get sorted, so I'm still holding off just now... until I saw the Scirocco R in the magazines - and immediately put a deposit down on one!!
I also drove a TTS - which was more fun that the S3, and the Golf GTI mk6 which was also decent enough.
If you read the mk6 opinions, you'll see that most people agree that there isn't much between the mk5 v mk6... or certainly enough to upgrade just now.

I used to own the current S3 and have driven the MK6.
Its a tough call. If you look at it from a price perspective, when you add any spec to the GTI it is very close price wise to the S3 and you can get a decent discount on the S3.
In truth they are both a bit souless IMHO. Performance wise the S3 is a league ahead and on our wet roads it can put down the power all the time. Audi also have their sh!t together when it comes to things such as bluetooth. Against the S3 is the fact that its shape is old and it misses the nice flared wheel arches of the first S3.
I think the GTI looks nicer and the interior is a little fresher.
The car that will be the perfect mix will be the R20. Hopefully VW will give it some soul.

I love my mk V, but it's time to change it..

adw555, I am in a similar position to you. I love my 06 GTI but now having it for 3 years I want something new. I have booked a test drive in a S3 at the weekend. I have already taken out the new GTI and a scirocco but still cannot decide what I want.
I think I am gonna love the power and AWD in the S3 but I know that I wont be impressed with the interior, even more so considering I have seen the new GTI.
The only issues I have with the GTI is that its very much like what I have already got. I like my car but I think I might be bored after having a new GTI for another 3 years

..yea, the S3 list price is £27,480...but with discounts they will do it for £25,900....I'd sell the GTI privately.

Its funny you should say that, because I was looking at second hand ones a couple of weeks ago - and the cheapest S3 I could find (in the newest shape) was still about £20k for an '07 plate! If you want one with a 'few' thousand on the clock in an '08 plate or so, you're looking at £23-£24k. It makes a new one seem more realistic as they were facelifted at the beginning of this year and have a few new bits - and better wheels! :laugh:

You're still looking at 19k ish for any of them - with a decent 2008 one being about 24k. Seem to hold their second hand value pretty well by the look of it!

For speed there is no contest, the S3 wins hands down. - but where can you drive at 155mph excluding motorways ? And if you drive at 155mph on a motorway your likely to get your balls felt by the fuzz. Ok, the S3 is limited in its 155mph, but the mk6 GTI aint no slouch either and at a conservative 149mph top speed, its hardly that much slower. S3 is up with an STi in standing start speed but suffers turbo lag I hear too. The GTI is as smooth as the fonz.
S3 is much more thirstier, more expensive to insure, and for each standard car its almost £6k more to buy, running costs are higher and supposedly is very uninspiring to drive.
The GTI all the way, its a no brainer. Although I'm gonna test drive the S3 next weekend just for fun.

I share your dilemma. But for me, the Golf is the clear winner at this time.
Audi A3 is due to replaced for model year 2011. Next version will be built on new platform to be used across Golf, SEAT and Skoda ranges in addition to Audi models. Audi is focusing on developing a much lighter body shell that incorporate 30% weight savings. Both Autocar and Auto Express have shown renderings of what the car will look like. It looks fantastic. Audi is also apparently developing an RS3 which will get TT-RS's 5-cylinder engine and a new 7-speed DSG box. This will be the car that eats the Ford Focus RS for breakfast.
I imagine that RS3 won't arrive before 2012, but the S3 may be in showrooms by end of 2011. I certainly wouldn't by a current S3, because soon it will be obsolete and out of production - so you'll suffer greater depreciation when new model arrives - and, secondly, the new GTI-R will soon be out and is likely to be quicker than S3. If you can wait, you won't be disappointed by the next gen S3. But the Mark 6 Golf GTI is here now and the Golf R / GTI-R will be here around Christmas.

Why is the GTI and GTI-R mentioned as being a direct update of the GTI ? Its a bit unfair. The GTI is a GTI nothing more, mothing less. The GTI-R is not the GTI's newer faster brother, its an update of the R32. It also keeps getting mentioned as though they are going to cost the same too and will be the same to run.

lol the RS3 will be around £40k mate, the RS is £30k. You are better off comparing it against an evo fq400 which it will fail against. I seriously doubt the S3 will be launched the same year as the A3 (2011 isnt even confirmed) so expect a 2012 release date. The gti-r will also be FWD, better off with a mapped ed30, will beat the S3 on price and is a better car than the mk6

whilst the S3 is faster, has 4wd, the better brand and arguably better build quality... sorry but its does looks really really boring. much as every M Sport BMW has cheapened the look of the M-series, the S-Line Audis have cheapened the look of the S3.
the mk vi gti just looks so much more up to date. i was shocked whilst in the vw dealersship that when i walked between the mkv and mkvi golfs, how much the mkv seemed to have dated.

Its only when you spend time in the MK6 that you do realise that the MK5 is a little dated. My brother had one of the first MK5 Golfs when they were first out... and that was some time ago. At the time I hated the look of the MK5 and thought that the MK4 was a much more attractive option. The reason I mention this is that in a year or two's time you will be wishing you had a new shape A3 as opposed to an old shape one.
Its just a matter of time before you start to see the MK6's around alot more, after which they grow on you. As for the S3, they have just been around for so long that they have killed that shape to death. Plus for me the deciding factor would be that the S3 would be std and the Golf would be fully kitted out. That being the deciding factor I would go for the Golf everyday!!

The S3 was lovely, but with the discount I got on the Golf, it ended up over £2.5 cheaper than the S3 with the same spec....got my final couple of weeks with my mk 5 GTI...will be sad to see it go...still feels as good as it did when it was new 4 1/2 years ago...but looking forward to the new one :smiley:

The current S3 looks awesome - until you get to the rear, which looks plain and ugly IMO.
