Hey guys,
Right, as some may have seen, I got some RS6 rims a few weeks ago that have some pretty gnarly curbing on all of them (:(), but they were a good price, and I needed 4 wheels to put tyres on for my MOT last week.
So basically, I am trying to find out what stuff I need to refurb them! I have been looking at guides etc.. however I am struggling with what products to use, so if anyone can advise, that would be awesome :).
This is what I was thinking:
- Sand Paper: Halfords Project Pack (has various grades of sandpaper, but would 1200 be high enough? (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_181893_langId_-1_categoryId_165610)
- Halfords Filler Primer 500ml (not sure how many would be needed for 3 coats? on 4 wheels) (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_155241_langId_-1_categoryId_165495#dtab)
- Clear Lacquer 500ml (again, probably more than 1 can...) (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_203865_langId_-1_categoryId_165495)
Do these bits look ok? Or am I way off mark?, or can anyone recommend anything better? I am stuck for what to use to fill the curbing in though.. Guy in the thread I have linked below used some kind of filler, but then on page 2, someone commented saying Chemical metal is better.. I want something I can lay on and then sand back to get it nice and smooth! Any ideas?

I think that the general gist of a refurb is..
- Sand down/paint stripper all old paint/lacquer
- Lay some kind of filler on, wait to dry
- Sand filler down - what grade sand papers?!
- 3 coats of primer, sanding after coat 2 and after coat 3 with DRY 800 grit?
- lay on 3 coats of paint, sanding after coats 2 and 3 again? With 1200 grit WET?
- lay on 3 coats of lacquer
- Leave for at least 24 hours to dry properly
Think thats right? If not could someone advise?
Also seen that its a good idea to heat up the metal a bit with a hairdryer, and also put the spray cans in warm water before using them..
Will I have any problems doing this with tyres fitted? They are stretched a bit so masking them up will be piss easy, just wondered if any part of this process will damage/weaken the tyre, as I dont really want to mess about getting them removed and then put back on again!
Thanks for any additional advice/guidance that can be provided! I will likely give it a go on my old mk2's Steel wheel that I have sat in the shed first, or maybe do my standard audi wheels in a crazy colour to try it out :laugh:

Go to a scrappy and buy the worst piece of sh*t alloy you can and practice on that with the filling, sanding and priming etc

Sounds like a brill little project doing your own wheels.
How long would you have to wait between the coats of primer and spray our of interest?
Just trying to understand how long the whole process would take you.

Yes its very easy to use... its like working with plasticine :smiley: very easy to sand too. Plenty of other brands that do the same thing.

I think I mentioned to Dec about some other guides i had, here's one i found on my work Laptop.. This is good for repairs whilst still on the car rather than a full refurb but to be honest it applies to both and is a good write up with pics.

Went ok saying i did it on the street but still need a fue nice coats when i can get in to my works area were we vinyl up vans so wont be any wind ill be happy lol

Yeah when I do mine im going to chuck my standard wheels on as they still have enough tread on them. Hopefully I will be able to prep them in the evenings after work, then get the majority of the spraying done, if not all of it done over a weekend or two! Got my grans garage to use (long as I cover her car up :lipsrsealed:) So will give it a go!

Couple are just scuffs on the outer bit of the lip, couple have bits further in.
The paint overall is pretty pants, so will need to strip all the paint off I think. If I use paint stripper, will it damage either the alloy or the tyre? (Will be masking the tyres up, but just incase..)

I used way, way, way more paint than I thought I would, so maybe factor that in - buy more than you think you need! But yeah, it was a mix of the wet+dry sandpapers, then the usual primer, colour, lacquer and that was all there really was to it - I didn't attempt any curbing repair though.
Patience is probably the number one thing, a rushed job will show through especially if you hurry through some steps especially prep! But it's so rewarding when it's done and they're on the car, so I'd say go for it :cool:

Your refurb looks great! I just worry far too much about everything, and this is one of those things!
The bit that I'm going to worry about most is the masking up, paint removal (should i rub down, or paint stripper btw?) then the curbing repair. If I fook up the spraying, then I can always just keep trying it till I get it right! But the initial stripping is whats going to make me panic, as usually I wouldn't bother doing anything about them :embarassed: but I want to get them sorted out to look smarter!
Thanks for all the tips/guidance/help so far guys! Might go to halfords at the weekend and get a few of the bits I need to give it a go on my spare wheel :cool:

Just reading this post.
If it helps i didn't use any paint stripper on mine. I started with 60 grit sandpaper to cut through the lacquer and do most of the work, i then worked my way down until the primer on the wheel was nice and smooth. After this and making sure you clean every and i mean every bit of dust off, triple check this part, you then want to acid etch prime the wheels (Halfords £10.99 in the large metallic red tin) so the paint keys to the wheel properly. You can then paint normal primer over the top and carry on with the flatting process.
Any scuffs,dents or chips in the wheel were flattened (gently with a hammer) to remove any burrs and then filled with a metal filler (also in Halfords), then sanded to a flat finish before the etch primer went on.

Awesome! Thanks dude! From the looks of these wheels, they have had paint over paint, as they are a slightly darker silver/greyish than standard (which I like) but nowhere near as dark as anthracite :undecided: So I think it is going to take a lot of rubbing to get them down to the right level to be able to patch the curbing :sad:
Suppose all I can do now is give it a go! Tbh they are probably the easiest wheel to do this on as it is such a simple design :tongue:

For what it's worth I've never re-furbed a wheel in my life, this was my first go, no practice runs just straight onto the wheel, if I can make a half arsed job on the fiddley RA's you'll be fine. :cool:

mine are foobards mix of curbing (previous owner) and lacquer pealing very old pics not even lowered so the lacquer peal is much worse

i am leaving my tyers on as well trying to do it cheap as i can for now, so well just cost me for balancing when i have done them, what's best way to remove the weights on the wheels? can you just pull them off?

should look tidy mate, i am only doing myn black because . .black car going for the stealth look on the out side plus don't see as many black tt comps as you see Chromed

Well having the face and half way inside of the alloy black them the last half on the inside red so taking the weights off place round corner its £5 a tyre for balancing

i've got some ats cups i'm refurbing at the moment, the dish is coming up alright with wet and try but there's a few nasty scratches around the very edge of the lip. what sort of filler can i use for this that i can sand down afterwards but leave bare? some sort of liquid metal ?

Right, so just taken some close ups of the curbing. Having looked at them again (and while they are dry and clean :lipsrsealed:) I don't think that the curbing will be too hard to fill on the most part, and will only need a small about (or I don't think they will need much except some patches).

They don't look too hard to do tbh, i'd set about flatting the whole wheel down until you have a nice smooth surface overall and so the filler has a nice key. Filler over all the scuffs and flat them back down again. It's always worth spraying a bit of primer over to see if they have been sanded smoothly. Don't do what i did and forget there was a hammer on the shelf above where i was painting as after i had finished the lacquering the damn hammer fell onto the wheel face and put three small dints in it :) Good job i'm changing the colour.

What grade sand paper would you recommend to use to get a smooth enough but still keyed finish? :smiley:
Knowing me I would go up to 1200 or something and I dont think the primer would stick to that? So guessing around 600?

1200-1500 is exactly what you want to finish off with, the acid etch primer will adhere fine to a smoothed surface.
I started off with 80 grit to get into the top layerr of lacquer/paint and then progressively worked my way upto 1200 to finish off.
What i would say is once i had a decent finish the 1200 was done as a wet and dry process, it helps get the perfectly flat finish. This is where nearly all of the prep time is spent and you need to keep checking the finish is spot on. After you've finished flatting/wet and dry sanding the final primer coat there's no going back when you put the first colour coat on, it'll show up any scratch surfaces that you didn't smooth out properly.
Just take you're time and if you start to think you rushing the job, walk away and leave it a little while.

Works out much cheaper than halfords (you get 1500ml for £14.10 whereas halfords you get 1000ml for £13.98)!
My dad has bought and used this on his car, whereas I used halfords lacquer on mine, little difference between them, if anything the eBay stuff applied better!

Ah awesome! Thanks dude! Im in no hurry, don't think I will get a chance to properly tackle all 4 at the same time till sometime in November, however I might give it a go on a spare wheel first so will just get the halfords stuff for quickness :)
How does wet and dry work? Is it better to use it wet? Or should you use it dry first then wet etc..?
Also I read that you shouldnt use wet on primer as primer absorbs moisture?

Told you i hadn't done this before.
When i wet sanded the final primer coat i had two containers with water in, one to wet the sandpaper and the other one the dip to rinse residue.
Because of the time i was wet sanding (early hours of the morning) I had all four wheels in the house (heating on) overnight so I would hazard an educated guess and say that this was sufficient to dry them out properly.

Hi all,
Just as a note, once I had lacquered mine I was unsure about the best way to put a shine on the finished wheel as the lacquered finish was a bit rough and had a nice fine orange peel. I didn't want to wet sand the lacquer just in case it went wrong so I used a cutting compound to start with and finished off with a resin polish and the lacquer came up a treat, all the roughness completely gone, orange peel gone and left it with a very smooth shiney surface.
Once there on the car i'll post a picture, should be going on Friday once the new BBS centre caps arrive :)

I used what i had lying around so it was just some Autoglym but it did the job fine with a few goes round followed by a normal polish.
Thumbs up for being different on the wheels.

The first Autoglym stuff i used was a t-cut / cutting polish then followed by a normal resin polish. I'm sure something like G4 compound would be faster but i used what i had as Halfords was closed at midnight :smiley:.
Did you read the post i put up about re-furbing the RA's, be really careful when you apply the lacquer as it is very easy to over egg it and get yourself a load of runs. Make the first coat a very light one and leave it 15 mins before applying the second. I used a hairdryer to put some heat onto the paint before i applied the lacquer, not that i know what i'm doing but the theory was that it might help the lacquer adhere better and reduce the chance of flaking at a later stage.

Tbh mate, not sure, they have been satin blacked before and it hadn't lasted long so thought I would try and seal it???
But may try with out for a while!!!

Yeah i get what you're saying, it would just take that semi gloss effect away.

Well just had a play, and water started taking the splashes of paint off, with it only being acrylic!!
So will start the lacquering tomoz, no desperatly after a satin look, but it's a good base!

i ve sprayed my bonnet with matt black and i am going to be lacquering it as soon as i get the last coat on for protection, well still look a bit matt but really takes the matt look away which i am a bit :undecided: about but it well match my wing mirrors as there matt black and lacquered.

Quick update on mine, did lacquer the wheel, went really well, has made a beautiful colour of the satin black and purple!
Unfortunately my hut collapsed and has scratched the paint down to primer :(
But ya can't tell too much so I'll sort that later!
Need to get the tyre pumped up and onto the car it goes!!
As far as the experience goes - the spraying is a technique ya get used too,
Make a safe hut lol
And take your time with the prep, it's all worth it!!!

I am going to do myn in the garage making a temp "Hut" :grin: in there going to use my weight bench, table, extractor for the dust/spray and PVC sheat and tarpolin. jobs a good one . . . . . lol

Yeah, landlord still has lots of sh!t in my shed, so making do so I can get 2 wheels done for the calendar!

As soon as i can get some Steele or some cheap alloys[£30 lol] going to start going to take my time on prep and sorting out the curbing etc . going to do something a bit different not just black now. i got a idea in my head think ill keep it under my hat so its a nice surprise for all lol
involves black red or cream and a patten.
Need the diameter of the inside of a tt completion alloy :smug:

Made me laugh about your hut, easy to repair though. I did something similar on mine, didn't realise there was a pin hammer on the shelf above and the sodding thing dropped onto the rim whilst i was waiting for the lacquer to dry. Plus on top of this my 2 year old daughter decided to bang a key on another of the wheels and dented the paint in three places :grin:
