Okay, here we go chaps.
First mod was to move to NGK BKR7EIX plugs that Revo recommend.
Secondly, as I did a hard run in of the piston rings instead of the softly softly approach that VW always recommend I ditched the 5w30 oil and put in some Mobil 1 0W40 oil. If the rumours about the oil being a little too thin for the engine, then the 40 rating should help.
Next up was the stock and Stage 1 REVO mapping dyno runs, done back to back on the same day on the same dyno to give a clear representation of the gains available.
Stock run is bang on at 178.7bhp - VW quote 180ps=178.5bhp. Torque was a little down as VW quote 185lbft and the dyno read 178.3lbft. This isn't unusual as the gearbox was trying to kickdown at lower revs and so the pedal had to be kept away from the kickdown part of the throttle until the revs were well over 4.5krpm, which was passed the torque peak of the engine.
REVO stage 1 came out at 212.6bhp and 222.8lbft - true peak gains of 33.9bhp and 44.3lbft.
Stage 2 should be done before the end of the month with the additions of the Milltek TBE and ITG intake. These will also be done on the same dyno for a true comparison.
Also just ordered and to be fitted in the next 3 weeks will be a full front brake upgrade.
This will be a TAROX 6 pot brake upgrade with single piece 323mm discs, corsa pads, braided lines and upgraded brake fluid. I will also get a full weight comparison between the OEM and TAROX set-ups to see if there is any benefit on unsprung mass.
Finally, just ordered these too....Bilstein B16 PSS10's

Madness

This is going be mad if the golf 5 is anything to go by
Cant wait    :afro:
-
You really do not mess around
Going to be a beast!
-
That's a lot of BHP for a Polo  Looking forward to seeing more :afro:
-
^^^ Thats nothing..wait till he's finished
You dont hang around much with the mods do you. Will be a mental build!!!
-
Cheers guys,
No I don't tend to mess about now. I waited and slowly built up the Edition 30, but on reflection wished I'd done the mods as soon as possible, so that is the way this one will go. Some more mods over the winter period along with some show mods and it should all be set to use at the tracks and shows for next season.
Hybrid turbo or Garrett turbo upgrade will be my next decision to toil over. The existing injectors seem to run out of puff around the 290-300bhp and the DSG box may well give up before that. If things don't go to plan then maybe I will be looking at sticking an S3 engine in her and start again and aim a little higher. i wonder if a 4WD 400+bhp Polo is a good idea?

Good start - Ace car - change them alloys soon PLEASE
-
Is it brand new?
-
Awesome work so far and a nice little car..
-
Good start - Ace car - change them alloys soon PLEASE
Alloys should be changed by the end of the month Doc
The alloys going on should save between 3 and 4kgs a corner too.....bonus
-
Is it brand new?
Yep, it was a brand new car delivered a week ago. Remap went on after the first day run in to make sure all was well
-
defo dont hang around! how come more door's? :undecided:

Going to be epic :afro:
-
Sounds like a good project.......but why a Polo?
-
Very interesting....
Any chance of some seeds for that money tree you have.
-
nice Hurdy!
look forward to the updates on this one! :afro:

Sounds like a good project.......but why a Polo?
power to weight ratio??

power to weight ratio??
Really?? Edition30 with silly power to a lexus (I'm unsure if that was modded?) Come on John why a polo???
-
You sir, are nuts!
why not a Polo? These look much better than the MK6 GTI imo
-
Hurdy you're such a legend! I had to reply to this thread so it'll show up in my new replies

Elderly parents is the reason for more doors, otherwise it would've been a 3dr for sure.
-
Sounds like a good project.......but why a Polo?
power to weight ratio??
That's right. The Polo weighs in at under 1,200kg even in more door guise. The Golf GTI is over 1,400 kg. With very little effort the Polo will free up another 45kg and then with lighter alloys, battery, exhaust, brakes etc a sub 1,100kg car is easily possible. So even as the power on the car is now it would go over 200bhp/ton. A Golf GTI would have to be over 280bhp for the same power to weight ratio. A rough target of 240bhp at full stage 2 with the main weight reductions done would give 215bhp/ton and with a hybrid conversion that would be 290bhp and 260bhp/ton. A stage 2+ Edition 30 with full weight reductions would still need to have over 350bhp to make the same power to weight ratio. Then add to this the pure advantage of size and adjustability of a lighter car and it starts to make sense.

Another new project i've missed the start of.
Welcome back to what you do best. Great choice of car. Much closer to the original golf in some ways (size/weight). Was talking to a mate of mine recently about the fact that the closest, modern GTI to a MK1 had to be the current polo. If I wanted something like mine but new, this makes sense.
-
I was saying the other day that with cars seemingly getting bigger, the Polo is now more the size I would have expected a Golf to me.
-
Looking forward to watching this project evolve. Great choice of car.
-
Good stuff fella!

Ok, quick schedule of work to be done in the short term......
Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's - 7.5" X 17" ET36 in anthracite (OEM are 7" x 17" ET46) - due to arrive in two weeks.
Milltek full Stainless steel TBE. No middle box or pre-cat - again due in 2 weeks.
Bilstein B16 PSS10's - due at the end of the week.
Tarox 6 pots and 323mm discs (OEM are 288mm and single pot calipers) - One week for delivery as I ordered cherry red.......again!
ITG intake - imminent
Rear ARB - TBC
Intercooler - undecided on which one to get - Forge, APR or VWRacing (once developed), but may opt for Forge again as they have one which would fit with a little adaptation.
Lightweight battery - by the end of the month.
So it should be a quick change ready for winter, with plenty of protective grease etc going on to keep it looking pristine over those harsh winter months.
Over the winter I'll be looking at a few other bits for show and go too.
-
I really need to venture round Yorkshire more to see if I can spot this beast in the making
-
This is gonna be crazy! I have to keep my eye on this!
-
Hat tip to the man with deep pockets and good taste in modifications.
Why start from brand new? I'm confused.
I thought the idea with the Golf was that it had become too fierce for a daily.
Isn't this going to wind up the same (very quickly, too)?
I still think you should have gone 968 for a plaything and had a relatively sane daily, but it's your cash and I like what you do with it.
-
In the words of Alan Partridge, YES ! YES ! YES ! YES ! YES !

I'd debated other routes of cars/modifications, but the wife simply came home one day after a passenger ride in one of these and said "I've found OUR new car!" and that was it, I had no choice. Although I did vet the choice with a few extended test drives
My better half doesn't mind the mods, in fact she specifically asked about me putting the Bilstein coilovers on the Polo - but not in those words, it was more like. That ride on the Golf was lovely are you doing the same again? well.....I didn't want to disappoint her eh?
The only proviso is that I'm not allowed Nitrous injection on this one as the NOS in the Golf scared her sh!tless. and took up the boot space. So I guess that means water/meth through the screenwash bottle then
-
Because of the ED30, you kind of set yourself up for this. Most people that clicked this project EXPECTED something mad, that's what we got!
Good luck with this, i hope it turns out to be as mad as it sounds!
-
Just came across this Jon, looks absolutely mental. I'll be very interested to see what figures stage 2 brings you. All the best with it
-
I cannot wait to see this develop! If the ED30 was anything to go by this is going to be nothing less than spectacular
-
The Hurdy Gurdy man strikes again!
Tarox brakes? Hmmmmm now there's a thought!
-
Power to weight ratio's on that first phase are impressive, want to keep an eye on this for the girlfriends next car.....
-
ITG intake is delayed - self imposed though as they said I could have the existing intake or wait 3 weeks for their new polo GTI specific intake. The current intake is generic between the Ibiza Cupra/Fabia VRs and the Polo GTI, to account for the fact that the Cupra and VRs have their batteries in the engine compartment and space is at a premium. The Polo GTI has the battery in the boot and so there is loads of space for a full intake
-
Just spotted this! Looking forward to seeing how this one goes.... good choice with the polo I say! Had one as a courtesy car and apart from a few niggles it drove better than the MK6 golf i had and seemed much shaper to turn in.
Will be a great toy once done

These really are super little hatchbacks. Look at the PDF file below and it should give you an idea of what can be done with the Polo GTI. APR haven't gone anywhere as far with the one in the link as I want to and the APR car is already faster around a track than the Focus RS

Just read all of that looks good but they say the main problem was the DSG box.. has anyone got a map for the DSG box in your car ??
-
Normal Hurdy madness resumed - thought you had been quiet a bit too long
-

Already in development. Shark Motorsport should have something very soon ( next few weeks). Revo, who would be my first choice have plans, but nothing due for release until after the new year.
-
Normal Hurdy madness resumed - thought you had been quiet a bit too long
I was getting modding withdrawal symptoms JV.
Now I'm getting a steady daily dose, normal service has been resumed.

Well that will help you out no end actually having control over the bloody thing.. the only thing that annoys me with my dsg is it rnadomly kicks down when it doesnt need to lol

Yep, the kick down annoys me no end!
-
Awesome this Hurdy. Can't wait to see what you do. Loved your MK5, bloody beasty!
-
Looking forward to seeing this progress
I love the thought of all that power in a small, light car - a real pocket rocket
This months EVO mag has a small write up of their long term Polo GTi - driven hard on the Stelvio Pass - they seemed impressed. They also comment that it is also a good 120mph cruiser on the Autobahn - so best of both worlds.
-
I subscribe to EVO and have read that very same write up  They seem to like it more the more they drive it = hidden depths
Some more goodness arrived today.....
The Bilstein coilovers
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/DSC00322.jpg)
Team Dynamics pro Race 1.2 alloys and Yokohama Parada Spec 2 tyres, along with the lightweight race battery and underneath it all....The Milltek Turbo-back exhaust system and Whiteline Rear ARB.

seems my return is timed well, just had a quick catch up read and this is going to be awesome!!!!
hopefully get to catch up at some shows next year, possible elsecar to see the progress!
-
Hi there Han and welcome back  How's the Lady with the fantastic Tatoo doing these days? Are you feeling the Cabrio love again?
I'll definitely be at a few more shows next year and may even enter one or two show and shines :nerd: Definitely be at Elsecar at some point on the day.
-
rude not to go to elsecar living so close, i'm half an hour closer, moved to west yorks and 30mins further south! :D
(not to hijack, but i'm doing well, no new tattoo as of yet, but possible one at frith St tattoo next weekend. Would love a cabrio, but it seems i've bought another mk2, this time a gti - still a 5dr, but couldn't pass it up at the money! it's far better than the mk4 1.4!)
i totally love the polo by the way, think they're a really attractive car with lots of potential!

Me too as I only live 20 mins away. Just looked at your new Motor and it looks good and in the best colour
Don't call it attractive  That's only one step away from pretty!!!
It's meant to be going to look mean and moody
-
i've been told referring to "stealth" as "pretty" is not acceptable...
-
Well, I thought that I'd better see what stuff weighs before it goes on the car, so here we are...
OEM wheels with tyres weigh 20.0kg - lighter than I thought.
Team Dynamic Pro Race 1.2 alloys and tyres weigh in at 17.6kg - a saving of 2.4kg a corner.
Spare came out of the boot = another 14kg gone.
Bilstein B16 PSS10's weigh 20.5kg including the box!
Milltek Stainless steel Turbo-back exhaust system weighs 19.4kg including the box I laid it on.
Lightweight race battery weighs 7.3kg
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/DSC00325.jpg)
Once the OEM suspension and Exhaust is off I'll get a weight saving and post it up.

-
You're obsessed man.
Nice work though. Will be interesting to see how this compares to your Ed30.

Really jealous now! Wish I could lose a stone........... or two!
-
What's your secret? I'm currently on 15.5 stone and need to lose about 2 stone
-
It's relatively easy - reduce portion sizes. Eat less. Keep exercising. The weight WILL come off.
Don't view it as a mystery - it's a simple less in = need to remove fat to keep running.
Be prepared to feel a bit hungry and a touch wobbly at times though.
I lost 1 1/2 stone over the summer. Put nearly 3/4 of a stone back on in the last couple of months though. Took my eye off the ball and enjoy food too much. :undecided:
Weight's where it's at for human and vehicle performance.
-
Small forks.
-
I simply stopped eating chocolate, went to diet carbonated drinks, started using low calorie sugar and weight train for 20 mins a day on a multipurpose exercise machine. The only thing I miss is the chocolate!!!
-
i assume this is all fitted by now ??

-
i assume this is all fitted by now ??
Fitting on Wednesday when I have the day off. Popping the alloys on tomorrow before work. Pics to follow.
Weighed the car today on the works weighbridge with the spare in and half a tank of fuel. Weighed exactly 1,200kg. Target is to knock 100 kg off that.

-
Excellent, I was hoping you would weigh the whole car before you start the upgrades :)
-
Lower now, so here are a few pics

wow! well done you :D healthy is the way forward! you know mug of fat is just under a lb in weight i believe.... thats a lot you've lost!
Things you do for cars eh
-
Woohoo,
Stage 2 put on the car today and it feels much livelier.
Exhaust system sounds sublime with a sound that even Steve Jr at Statllers says sounds better than a 2.0TFSI and I have to agree.....of course. Lovely deep burble at idle and some nice "farts" from the car on gearchange and overrun crackle.
Brakes should be fitted tomorrow - front.......and back
Dark tints on this weekend for the windows (neglected to tick the B pillar tint option :sad1:), but should be VERY dark. Then next week the front end will get a face upgrade
and then water/meth.
Got to keep myself busy on my 10 days off.
-
Well I fetched my brakes today and they are brand new TAROX B30 - 6pots. The first set in the UK
OEM brake disc, caliper and carrier weigh-in = 13.5kg
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/IMAG0236.jpg)
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm shiny new things = 12.5kg, so bigger AND lighter = deep joy too.
Caliper comparison to OEM
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/IMAG0234.jpg)
Going on nicely.
Even got my hands dirty today!
The final money shots....
First impressions are excellent. The brake feel is superb and very progressive. There is more "feel" to the brakes and when used in anger are phenomenal at retarding speed. I'd even go as far as to say that they are better than the 10 pot TAROX's I had on the Golf - but the Golf is a heavier car. I can thoroughly recommend these if you have the money and there aren't many brake sets that look this good either.
-
Sex wee is starting to flow with this car now!
Looks mint mate.

If the carrier bolt holes are the same then yes they would fit as long as you roll on at least 17" alloys.

All I can say is it's already another insane no expense spared Hurdy motor.......

Nice car! Love it Hurdy!

b.t.w I don't think them brakes suit it.....but as I'm working in your area next week I can pop down and relieve you of them

Wasn't so sure on the 5 door at first but now I think it looks amazing
Can't wait to see more

hurdy you nutter  I like the mini splitter, it seems new cars are appearing with 'aero' features atm. A bit like the new ford closes its grilles when the engine doesn't need cooling, proper motorsport influence there!
-
nice project, lovin' the performance attitude.
-
Hmm, what does everyone think about a black and gold themed car?
-
Gold = Subaru
-
I reckon it would look sick if it was done right! ie, not to much gold :)
-
Hmm, what does everyone think about a black and gold themed car?
The old JPS colours were a fav of mine, not sure if you could pull it off on a Polo however.

Why are people even questioning you!
What ever you do is insane so i say go for it!

Had the Polo on the Rollers again today.
Firstly I'll start with an apology - the first dyno result was 213bhp UNCORRECTED and should have been 206bhp :embarassed: In my rush to post up I took a pic off the dyno before adjustment.
Never mind eh!
So onwards, and the dyno plots today are all comparative on setting 2 and the run today was on OEM intake and full turbo-back exhaust, whereas stage 1 was done with just NGK plugs and setting 2.
As you can see from the photo below there is a decent difference between stage 1 and stage 2.
Re-adjusted for my error.....
Stock to stage 1 gave an increase of 27.8bhp and 44.7lbft
Stage 1 to stage 2 gave an increase of 14bhp and 9.5lbft
Stock to stage 2 gives an increase of 41.8bhp and 54.2lbft = an increase of 23.4% in power and 30.4% in torque.
As you can see from the graphs it is a different beast to drive now, with stage 2 torque being higher than stock peak torque all the way from 2100rpm to 6000rpm
Also stage 2 power is greater than peak stock power all the way from 4100rpm to letting off at the pedal on the dyno at 6500rpm.
The downside is I need an intercooler and intake for sure as the car gets heatsoaked after just a few dyno runs.

Dark tints on this weekend for the windows (neglected to tick the B pillar tint option :sad1:), but should be VERY dark.
Just caught up with this. Surely tints only B-pillar back?

BT?
Yep, eventually, once I know the engine can cope then it will be full steam ahead looking for a decent Big Turbo upgrade and complimentary software.

Hmm, what does everyone think about a black and gold themed car?
there is one 2008 subaru impreza wrx on westcoastcustom.com gallery. I watched that built on custom my ride program and the car looked mint but it was with matt black colour with orange/gold theme.

A quick update....
Fitted the Lightweight race battery today
Standard battery and fittings were weighed out at 15.25kg
Lightweight race battery and fittings weighed in at 7.3kg
A saving of almost 8kg.
Looks like it was meant to fit there too!
-
looking good what else you got to fit ?
-
How come you didn't just put it in the front, wouldn't it have been easier?
-
How come you didn't just put it in the front, wouldn't it have been easier?
Makes room in the engine bay? Weight distribution? I guess there's a good reason behind it otherwise Hurdy wouldn't have done it :undecided:

Indeed, just curious what the reason is. I'm waaaaaay too lazy for that kind of modding
-
Good reason like that's where the stock battery is?
-
:afro: 8kg is a saving worth making.
-
looking good what else you got to fit ?
The modding market is still developing stuff and I'm jumping on the bandwagon.
My car will be used for the development fitting of the Forge Motorsport Polo GTI intercooler. It is similar to the VRS/Cupra, but the mountings are different.
ITG intake is in development now and being test fitted on SteveP's Polo GTI.
APR have a development ATB Limited slip diff on their Polo GTI, which I'll be getting....when they eventually release it.
A couple of companies have development big turbo conversions on the go and there is also a hybrid turbo in development testing on the APR Polo GTI. I don't know which one of these will be the best, but I'm keeping an ear to the ground as to how they go and the outputs they get.
I'm also waiting on information about Carbon fibre parts for the Polo too as these should help shed a few valuable kilo's.
I should have a Devil's own water/meth kit on the car before Christmas too.

The OEM battery is already located in the boot, so it was an easy mod to go for. It also free's up space in the engine compartment for a proper sized intake as the VRS and early Cupra's have their batteries in there and there's sweet f-all space left for the intake.
-
Ah makes sense then. I thought you had moved it to the boot too, and was thinking that surely the weight you would have been saving was banged back up by the cable run from front to back., you know what they say about assumption!
-
Hurdy gets a new car and mods the life out of it within a few weeks. John, you're a legend. I shall watch this with interest. :afro: As for black and gold, if you can do it tastefully go for it and do something different, you never gave a t0ss what others thought anyway.
-
weight saving at its best. very good build, look forward to more updates
-
was big fan of your mk5 and bet this will will be equally appreciated. very well done so far

Okay, well I bought some of the new gloss carbon fibre 3M wrap and thought I'd try it out on the front badge of the Polo.
Whaddya think?

Not a fan sorry, but the rest is awesome!

A bit dark, but more subtle than I thought too. Plus it will protect the badge from stones attacking it on track. 8-)

Quick 0-60mph video on a flat, damp uneven surface. Short shifted into 2nd and only used 5k rpm to avoid wheelspin on the damp surface. Video is only 6 seconds long and I stopwatched the video 0-60 as 5.6-5.7 seconds. With a dry even surface I reckon a sub 5 second 0-60mph dash could be achieved. Not bad for a little car. Enjoy

Woah! This car looks like a lot of fun
-
Ah well, I knew I wouldn't be able to resist for too long. Did some deeper investigation today about a hybrid turbo. New OEM turbo is £1100 +VAT and then looking like another £XXX for hybridising and then £XXX for custom software.
£XXX means basically I don't know how much yet.
With the rest of the planned hardware mods (intercooler, intake and water/meth) I'm looking at somewhere between 270bhp and 300bhp, but where between those figure is anyones guess
To put this into perspective 270bhp on a 1.4 is the equivalent of 385bhp on a 2.0 litre car and 300bhp on a 1.4 is the equivalent of 428bhp on a 2 litre car - without internals!!!!
-
Another little mod for today...
Wrapped the two front grey plastic sections with the carbon wrap to see what they look like. Not bad actually. Livens the front end up too.

Never sure on wrapped badges but loving the surrounds. Makes the OEM style look cheap.
Was unaware of the performance potential. Am almost convinced that I would prefer this over a golf to play with if I were ever in a position to have a modern toy hatch.

If I compared my ED30 to the Polo, I'd say that the Polo is faster day to day around town, and in the twisties it is definitely a smidge faster and more nimble, but on an open road the ED30 would have monstered it. Braking, I'd say the Polo on the 6 pots is better than the Golf ever was on the 10 pots, mainly due to the weight. On a Dragstrip the ED30 would be around 0.5 to 1.0 seconds faster as the Polo stands now, but give me another 4 months and the Polo will be just as fast to well over 100mph I reckon - and without having to strip out rear seats etc.

Okay, a couple of pics..
1st one is a daylight pic of how the car looks now.

Looking really menacing man  is it possible to carbon wrap the bit underneath the bumper grill? or the complete mesh surround?
-
car looks sweet mate, love what your doing with it, personally id keep the red bits in your grille, just my 2p's worth
-
I'm going to try the carbon on the red bit and if I don't like it then it will go back to red
-
Maybe carbon wrap the red bits on the grille, and just get a red GTI badge to break it up.

hurdy, step away from the carbon wrap!
in all honesty the badge and foglight surround would look better satin black
-
Indeed, don't go over board with the carbon, or you run the risk of making it look like it's owned by a 17 year old
-
hurdy, step away from the carbon wrap!
This.
It's not going to wrap up any faster, or lighter.

Red carbon wrap?
No just a red badge. I like the satin black instead of carbon wrap idea too. But do what you feel bud, its not like you follow the pack with your car and you seem to have done alright by yourself. :lipsrsealed:
-
The red badge is a good idea, especially if I black out the red strips. Satin black on the grey fog panels wouldn't work. I looked at gloss black first, but the panels aren't completely smooth ( they have a grainy effect to them ) and the grain shows through. The carbon wrap is slightly thicker and has an emboss type pattern with it to get the carbon effect, which covers the grainy surface well. Real carbon would be my personal favourite, but there are no parts at all out there, so it would have to be custom skinning with real carbon fibre and that would add more weight than the vinyl!!
Satin or gloss on the red strips would work
-
Personally I love the red strips! Maybe do the bottom grill surround red to match? and the small section that links the fog surrounds in carbon to match. Obviously, if you wanted to do the GTI badge red then maybe loose the red bars......
-
hurdy, step away from the carbon wrap!
Sticky back plastic FTL.

I'll be getting a red GTI badge for the front, so I thought the black would highlight that more instead

Red - it sets it off nicely (as it's supposed to).
It's also supposed to have 178 bhp.
I like the carbon, make it look meaner. Mean look for a mean car.
Any more carbon would be over the top imo, spot on as is.

+1 on this! If you weren't getting a red badge is say stick with the red bars but both is too much.

I prefer the red, it's the way GTI's are meant to be really, and it's a lovely contract to the black.

I like your idea with red badge as I suggested :lipsrsealed:  and black slats. Gives it a sort of murdered and mean look, but also some caracter with the red badge.

Will be ace with just the red badge for that hint of colour to break it up. Love the almost stealth look of it all black though.

Hurdy, hurry up and give us an update, ive just found this thread and i want to know whats going on :D

I'm with you on this one John. Looks good and away from the norm. If you were going to not do anything to it then you may as well leave everything standard. keep up the good work. :afro:

To me a GTI isn't a GTI without the red piping at the front...
... although your car is arguably no longer a GTI with what you're doing to it.
I like the black badge, but I think the black piping is lost somewhat on the all black front. Is there no other colours in your colour scheme you could incorporate? I think it was SteveP on here who wrapped his piping in orange to match his Porsche brakes a while ago.

I did but I recently put it back to the one I have now as it's one of my faves and was taken on it's first day out after 7 years.

viability at times is also an issue but at least cooling isn't.

Another mod completed....
RNS510 with Bluetooth. Looks like it was designed for the Polo GTI Fascia as well as the black gloss surround matches perfectly. Works perfectly with the MFSW and Park reverse sensors. Also has the speed camera locations and speed limits as POI's on screen. Lovely bit of kit.

Dropped in to Awesome GTI UKMKIV's dyno day this morning and thought it would be a pity to not pop it on.
225 bhp and 274lbft - not bad for a 1.4 with just a remap and an exhaust towards performance

Beast!

Just a mini mod for today. Changed the rear badge for a red GTI version.
Front badge will get the same treatment when it arrives.
Arrives in a template so you can't get the individual letters misaligned, which is a nice touch by the maker.

Had the car on the dyno at Statllers again today. The first dyno with the ITG intake on. Impressive is the key word here for the ITG.
The only mod between this and my last dyno run at Statllers and today's is the ITG
Stock airbox/filter - 220.5bhp and 232.5 lbft
ITG intake - 236.0bhp and 267.9lbft which is an increase of 15.5bhp and 34.4lbft
Getting there
-
That is bloody impressive!
Was it just once it was rollered? or did you do another just to be sure?
-
That torque curve is very nice.
So when you taking me for a spin?
-
 Was that on the same dyno?
-
That is bloody impressive!
Was it just once it was rollered? or did you do another just to be sure?
It was dyno'd 3 times and this was the best graph, with the others he was feathering the throttle too much so it didn't kick down (DSG) and missed the peak torque. Best power output was 240bhp, but had a dip in the torque curve. all runs made between 236bhp and 240bhp and 200whp. Not bad for a 1.4!
More to come though as I'll be doing the intercooler and hybrid turbo over into the new year and water meth after that.
Car is basically now just over 200bhp/ton.
-
 Was that on the same dyno?
Yep!
-
That's not half bad for the ITG. The horsepower increase would be impressive alone by most standards but the increase in torque is unreal. How restrictive must the factory box be?
Red badge looks good too. Although I'd have been tempted to leave it debadged. But looks great anyway.
Any chance of some running vids now that it's got a bit more?
-

LOL,
If you are available when I am I'll gladly take you for a spin sometime

Just picked this thread up Hurdy what happened to those simple days?

I was very happy with the extra output. The stock box is frankly pants and has a very restrictive front intake section and a very convoluted path into the turbo via a huuuuuge "swirlbox".
Getting the front badge done the same when it arrives.
I'll try and commandeer a mate for video duties and get one up over the next week or so (busy for 7 days as of tomorrow)

My god that's an impressive increase!
If only an intake kit would make the same difference on a 1.8t
-
Are you going to look at greabox mapping at all or just leave it as it is? I think I heard rumors that the DSG can be tinkered with to try and help maintain the torque curve a bit longer.

Yep, but there is no DSG map out yet. Revo and Shark Performance are both going to be developing maps after Christmas.
-
So, it is the return of the Performance box.
0-60mph runs on a flat surface and done each way. Surface was dry, but with some mud in parts. Tyres were normal road tyres (not semi slicks), the car had it's full interior minus the spare (aerosol onboard!) and a full tank of fuel. Runs were done in sport mode with the traction control off.
0-60mph in 5.1 second both ways
Here is a pic of the performance box screen.

Madness yes, but I love it. Remember I managed 4.4 with the ED30 and that was with nitrous and 440bhp, stripped out and on R888's.

Phenomenal! Well done fella, onwards and upward though! or downwards as the case may be!

Wow, seriously impressive

I need to set a few targets.
I'm looking for 0-60mph in under 5 seconds.
0-100mph in under 13.5 seconds and a sub 14 second 1/4 mile.
These times hopefully should be achievable with the mods I already have and would put the car on par with some modded ED30 times.
Also.....I think a sub 8 min 30 second B to G of the Nurburgring should be achievable too.
-
there is a guy called sam round my way with a white one and it goes like sh!t off a shovel not much keeps up with it until top end where evos' and skylines etc take off..
awesome car and awesome results keep up the good work all you need now is a dsg map as standard map so frustrating

Too right, Revo should be doing one of these early next year.

Whilst bored I knocked up some comparison graphs and separated torque from power. These were all done on the same dyno. The overall area under the graph is the important thing and shows how the power/torque delivery changes as the tuning progresses.
POWER
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/Dynocomparisons.jpg)
TORQUE
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/Dynocomparisonslbft.jpg)
The difference on power and torque delivery from stock to mapped is phenomenal, at some points the difference between mapped and stock is 70bhp on power and at other points up to 150lbft more on torque
-
 Simply AMAZING
-
Another performance box update. Done with the first half on the flat and then a kink to a slightly uphill second half. Brave pill swallowed, dry start with damp patches. Had to brake just before the 1/4 mile mark, otherwise I would have run out of available surface.
0-100mph with another consistent 0-60mph
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/IMAG0268.jpg)
1/4 mile time - this was only just achieved and I was braking before the end of it. Remember this wasn't a bang straight run and the whole of the second half was uphill. If I had the room then I reckon probably a 102mph terminal would have been about right and if it had all been straight and flat, who knows?
So, I guess I need to adjust my targets a little!!

LOL.
That's why I did them, stickers and visual mods add more than a remap definitely!
-
So, here is a bit of an explanation of why I ended up with the Polo GTI............
The graph below shows my acceleration curve in comparison with four other performance cars. The lower the line on the graph the faster it is.
As you can see it isn't until 130-140kph that even the 395bhp Golf would get to the same speed as my Polo GTI. However, because I would have accelerated faster up to that point my car would be further ahead of the Golf at the point they are at the same speed. The Focus doesn't even get to the same speed as my Polo until 160kph (100mph).

Yeah is pretty sh!t, Wank area we are living in for that, Doncaster Sheffield Rotherham all in top 10 worst car crime places in UK :S
Serious note though if you are local which i guess you are, You will have to let me know if your going to be running any track or 1/4 mile events next year, would enjoy coming down with you with mine

Yeah, I live in Stannington. I will be doing a fair few trackdays, shows and 1/4 mile events next year so hurry up and get stage 2+ on with Water/meth and that REVO extreme map I mentioned
-
is the water/meth expensive to setup?
Also im looking to add another THS intercooler and decat again along with a fuel pump and bigger injectors. However modding will be on back burner now till after the new year.
Feels quick now though. Although there's defo some flatspots in some of the gears where the power just drops then comes back. Very similiar to what used to spark my rants about revo on my MKVI GTI. Although the Stage 2 was brilliant

Water/meth is about £7-800.

To start with I'm going for the Loba270 hybrid turbo. If all looks okay with this then I'll look at a larger Garrett. Unfortunately with this engine and gearbox you have to take baby steps
-
The Audi A1 might offer you some competition:

252bhp, Quattro...
I've seen that and it will have the heavier engine and box plus AWD making it a good 150kg heavier. 5.7 seconds to 60mph and mine is already 5.1 before the rest of the mods go on. I still like it though!
-
I really don't like the look of the A1s. Polo looks the nuts tho!
-
Shame they never dropped the 2.0T block into the ibiza cupra's over wise I'd go out and buy one!
Plus audi have been banging on about that quattro A1 for ages, finally good to see it. Except I think the A1 is ugly especially the back end, I would choose a polo gti or ibiza for looks anyday.
-
Polo .:R is due out in the second quarter of 2012, so I reckon it will have the same set up as theA1 quattro with a little less power as normally happens
-
Maybe the headline should be "Audi fail to create Hurdy Polo beater"

What do you mean by this? You have to fit a smaller hybrid to let is get used to that then smash the monster one in? Can you not just bang it in and map it accordingly?

I guess its because the tolerances of the engine are fairly unknown. No point in sticking a whopping big turbo on if the bottom end is going to say no, small steps are taken to try & prevent this.
My guess anyway!
-
I've been on the phone with Carl at Revo today and they more or less confirmed what I thought. They will not supply a map over what I already have for the 1.4tsi engine. They think it is too fragile and so aren't doing any further development
Leaves me a bit in limbo unless I decide on an engine transplant
TTRS AWD transplant anyone?
-
Speak to some other tuners, I'm sure someone will have the bottle to go further if you sign a waiver letting them off the hook if it goes bang in spectacular fashion.
Nick

Brilliant engine, sounds the nuts, scary how quick they are. My mate owns a new TTRS and I remember the LCR mk2 he had, that was quick with stage 2+, but this is in a different league at how quick it climbs to 160, oh and the stopping distance is amazing.
I remember when we was driving back on essex and we slowed the m25 down in all 3lanes, the Cupra and TT left me looking like at a stand still (n a 1.8T mk4) as they flew off, then at was about 110mph the TTRS really shined and left the LCR mk2 left for dead. I miss them days.
-
My car is excellent in terms of acceleration up to 90mph, but after that it slows. Reasonably speaking I shouldn't need huge acceleration over 90mph as I'd only really need it on large power tracks, 1/4 mile runs and 30-130 days, but next year I'm doing all 3!!!
As you can see below the pace is lovely up to 70mph due to the lower weight of the car, up to 90 isn't too bad, but 90-100 is starting to slow.
-
Still really good mate I would be happy with that... What 1/4 mile time you hoping for ?
I might give you a race at pod next year I my starlet

I've done a 13.8 using the performance box. The last half of it was uphill!

Since the power's somewhat capped when will we start seeing carbon body parts coming on to lower that weight?
-
carbon bonnet
-
Yes, looking at dropping another 50kg+ off the car.
Bonnet should save 8-10kg
Seats should save 25-35kg
Lexan glass should save 10kg
Even lighter alloys should save 4-8kg
So even with minimum savings of each that is still 47kg and would get the car to 1100kg with half a tank of fuel. With the power improvements planned I should be getting 230-240bhp/ton which should be ample............................ for now!
-
do they make many carbon panels for this ?

Well,
Booked in on Monday for the Water/Meth system Fitted. Gone for a Devil's Own system as it is simple and effective. The bottle and pump will be located in the boot next to the battery and will mean that there will be little evidence that it is even fitted apart from the injection point under the bonnet.
a 50/50 mix should give around 20-25whp extra on Revo Stage 2 setting "C" - race fuel only.
Effectively bhp should be somewhere between 260-270bhp.....fingers crossed!!!!
With the planned weight reductions in place this would mean around 235-245bhp/ton, which is just shy of my 250bhp/ton target.
Daily the car will run with either just water or water/meth mix on setting B.
After this I'll be off to Autosport International to interrogate tyre manufacturers for a set of decent semi-slicks to get the power down effectively.
-
Some reading matter for water meth...

Errr, Water/meth nearly fitted, finishing it off tomorrow as I've been a bit finickety with where I want the intall to go and it's taken a bit more time than anticipated
Looking nice and neat so far though and Statllers have been brilliant again.

How can you get lighter alloys? Also is this your daily driver? Your talking about semi slicks...

There are several lightweight alloys out there that are suitable for the Polo GTI, Oz Alleggeritas and Volk CE28N to name a couple. The Volkswagen are just 5.6 kg in the size I'd want.
Yes it is my daily and my previous daily VW had semi slicks on - ToyoR1R's and they had much more grip than normal road tyres.....even in the wet!

Here is a quick photo of the rear install for the Polo GTI. The pump is gravity fed from the bottle and so has to have it's intake point below the bottle bottom. Luckily on the Polo the boot section is very deep and allows for this. Full credit to Statllers as they made a really neat job of the install and pipework.
Still not fully installed yet as I'm having a custom pipe fitted to house the injector and it has to be fabricated first.

Sweet  What else is there to actually upgrade? Hybrid turbo I assume? Any thing else you can do?
-
Don't believe you. Need a video  (from outside the car)
Done a vid in the past of the sound stood still. Only revs to 4krpm with the DSG, so imagine this at full throttle.

I don't know yet, but there is definitely the LSD to do.

Sweeeeet mate. You boosting often? Average MPG? Smoking many cars off the lights?

Sweeeeet mate. You boosting often? Average MPG? Smoking many cars off the lights?
Like to use the boost to the full whenever I can. 36mpg average at the moment, which is better than I thought it would be. Not lost a green light start yet.
Had a play with a 225 TT last week. Polo won

Now that would be a different league. They do 3.8 as stock for the 0-60 sprint. Mate has one mapped that does 3.2 to 60!
Now if that engine could fit in my Polo!!!

Them cars are in a different league mapped my mates got one as well above 110 they are silly quick and the braking buts loads of cars to shame. Noise is nuts with a miltek system too. Make that engine fit I'm sure it can be done

OMFG!!!!
The new controller arrived this afternoon and so Steve fitted it and put some distilled water in to test it. Worked perfectly and even giving it the beans for quite a while the oil temps stayed under 100oC, which is much better than the 110oC+ I was seeing on spirited runs. The car ran much smoother and felt better at the middle/top of the rev range. Then came the water/meth mix!.....
Holy sh*t!!! it was like sticking another small engine to help mine under the bonnet. With the roads dry in parts today, I was able to give it the full throttle and even at 70mph+ was still getting wheel spin. The middle and top end of the rev range is MUCH stronger than before and Steve says that after a few days it will feel even better.
To say I'm impressed is an understatement, even though we'd been out in the car for a 15 min blast, when I topped up the bottle it had only used 120ml of mixture, so I know the bottle will last a fair while as it is about 3 litres to the brim.
Logs should get done tomorrow and then the dyno may have to wait as Statllers have had a refurb and the electrics aren't plumbed back into the dyno yet
Steve's promised it will be plumbed back in before the end of the week.
Bum dyno says muchos extra bhp and torque. Should hopefully see around 15-17whp and 25-28lbft increase.
Steve calls it a "Black Ops" install as under the bonnet and in the boot you literally wouldn't spot the difference. In the cabin you definitely see the controller though When that light comes on green it's like KITT in Pursuit Mode.
The car is still on setting B on the REVO, so I haven't even thought about trying it on the aggressive race setting C, which it is designed for.
The really good sign is that there isn't even a sniff of clutch slip either.
Almost forgot to mention that the controller allows you to set the minimum boost level where the water/meth comes in and another to set where the water/meth is fully on. My car has only had a proprietary setting and i'm sure some fine tuning on the dyno will optimise the benefits. The nozzle on mine is good for up to a 450bhp car, so should never really be at full capacity for my baby motor.
Still cannot believe the improvement it has made to how the car runs.....it's just .....better, smoother, more eager to rev. Like a well set-up ED30 on a crisp cool morning, but all the time!

Some reading matter for water meth...

A few more pics of the water meth install.
View from the front...."looks normal"
Hidden at the back is a "T" piece boost tap that goes to the sensor on the controller
(http://i156.photobucket.com/albums/t8/hurdy_album/Meth2.jpg)
And just to the side of the boost tap is the tap in to the intake manifold - best shot I could get as it is that well tucked away!
An early pic I took of where the water meth pipe and the boost tap pipe go through the bulkhead (before the silicone was added to protect the pipes)
Another pic I took to try and get a pic of the tap that didn't quite work, but shows the in-line non-return valve for the water/meth mix (just see the red bit at the right hand side)
This pic shows the wired in fuses for safety overload protection of the pump.

Bottle!
Finished rear install - very neat and you can just make out the black custom bracket that was fitted and sprayed black to mount the bottle to.
The earth point and power for the controller were taken from under the gearbox section of the dash (unfortunately no pic)

Pics of the paddle shifters fitted. Slightly different design to what I thought, but these actually look better and suit the shape of the wheel.

Changed a couple of the settings in VCDS today, took the car for a spin and the difference is superb.
Changes made.....
In VCDS Select Control Module, go to 03 ABS Brakes, then 10 Adaptation, go to Channel:
Channel 09 Brake Assist
There are 3 settings for this
0-center (stock setting)
1-small
2-hard
I changed this from the stock 0 setting to 2 and this has made the brake pedal more responsive to smaller inputs. Feels more positive in use, especially under enthusiastic motoring.
Channel 36 XDS
There are 3 settings
0-center (stock setting)
1-weak
2-strong
Again I changed this from 0 to 2 and this one mod alone makes the Polo into a different/better beast under hard driving. It acts almost like my ED30 did with the Quaife and yet doesn't feel as fidgety. Seems more planted around bends and that much better to push through the corner on exit. This mod comes with a five thumbs up...
Also got a chance to look at the log blocks that can be done and FOOK ME there are over 400 of them for the Polo GTI!!!!!
Annoyingly the measuring blocks all have different units of measurement and so for me to fully understand them I've had to wikipedia all the conversions to allow me to see what is what.
As I haven't got the water/meth running at the moment (no meth left!!) I thought I'd get stage 2 logs up and after faffing with conversions got the following.....
Block 201 - engine torque - max 350.1nm = 259lbft @ 3497rpm
Block 196 - Mass flow through throttle valve - 691.7kg/s = 192.2g/s = through the 0.81 division approx 237.2bhp
Typical schoolboy error was not pressing the turbo button and only getting a sample every 2 seconds so may have missed peak mass flow and engine torque alltogether!!
-
That sort of tweaking is mad - why does this stuff exist? In what case would VW provide these changes for people, is it a regional market thing?
"Hi dealer, please set my XDS to 2"
"eh?"
-
because it's cheaper to switch software and use one controller for all applications. clever germans
trackday 19th feb at cadwell john?

Ooooh, tempted. My Federal 595RS-R's should be delivered today too.
Details please?

Brief update...
Off to JKM in Portsmouth tomorrow for a massive dyno day. over 40 cars in attendance and the dyno fully booked.
Water/meth is on and working, but I have deliberately held off dynoing it for this day.
Federal track tyres have arrived as has my shiny new footrest and next week the upgrade turbo should arrive and go on.
-
You mean SATURDAY surely?
Don't forget to be there by 9AM
-
I enjoy reading the updates here, sounds great with the tweaking you have done.
You read the latest PVW? I think I read in there some where about an uprated actuator for the 1.4 turbos like the polo/fablar etc. Is this an option? Help you get more boost from your turbo, esp if you're fitting an uprated next week...pictures please
-
The turbo will come with an uprated actuator.

Is there a chance you may have the quickest polo GTI after all this?! What else after the turbo...

+1
Did read somewhere that you were getting the turbo fitted or am I going crazy?
-
Hey John.. You got a pic of the paddle shifters before fitting?..Also a couple more of the rear view?..
-
Been a little busy of late. :embarassed:
The car is booked in for an upgrade intercooler (35% larger), an upgrade radiator (78% volume increase) and the hybrid turbo fitting on the 8th March. The front of the car has to come off to get to the turbo anyway, so it made sense to have the others fitted at the same time. They are being made now, so the delay is for the I/c and rad.
Thanks to Gulfstream I also have a nice new shiny footrest to put my tootsies on too

The car is in Today (Thursday) for the turbo conversion and decat.
Another person is having the turbo conversion done at the moment and it looks like the Loba turbo flows a LOT more than anyone thought!!!!
More power than initially thought is always welcome

bet you cant wait to have it all finished (if u ever stop modding it)

Your having it totally de catted? I guess in 3 years time when you need an MOT you'll pop it back? What about wasted money with the sports cat?
You going to have many pictures of the install? I cannot wait to see this beast on a dyno!
-
The turbo is on and running.
0-60mph is now 4.9 seconds and 0-100mph is 12.3 seconds - down from 5.0 and 12.9. and this is still on the same Revo mapping.
1/4 mile is 13.6 @ 104.7mph.
done with the last half slightly uphill
Live logged the intake temps and the water meth is really doing the business. 30oC pre-throttle valve temps and yet when the wmi is on the manifold intake temps drop below 19oC from the same as the throttle valve temps. Not sure I even need the Pace i/c and rad! :surprised:
Also the boost is running okay at 0.1bar over requested, so no way out over-boosting.
Could do with a DSG map though to make things just how I want.

Glad its all worked out mate!! Guess you won't know about the HP/torque figures until on a dyno, got one booked soon?
I guess you will be getting a custom map now for the new turbo etc? And a DSG map? Is that so you change the way the DSG box works, ie shift timings etc?
-
I'll be doing a dyno before the 18th and hopefully a full ecu map before then too. The DSG map still hasn't been fully developed by anyone, so I guess i will have to wait for that. The DSG map would allow a Manual lockout of kickdown when in manual mode and hopefully allow some sort of launch control mode too.
Wolverine, the decat is a 2.75" bore to match the Milltek that is already there.

Finally, the new intercooler and radiator are on.

Well I'm back from the 30-130 day and apart from the poor weather conditions ( rained nearly all day ) the baby GTI performed faultlessly. After discussions with people who had been before and looking at past result I had set myself targets of 30-130 at 25-30 seconds and a top speed of 140mph.
Top speed achieved was 142.97 mph ( showed as 160 mph on the speedo )
30-130 mph was done in 24.04 seconds
So mission achieved on both accounts. 8)
What I didn't realise was that the airstrip wasn't flat, which I thought it would have been. There was a significant incline for the first third of the strip, then flat in the middle and then back to an incline for the last third. With this and the fact the surface was soaking wet the times for everyone weren't as good as expected. I had to start off the runs in third gear after finding out that a second gear start just ends up in a hail of wheelspin!
To give you all some idea of where I came in the overall standings, I came 38th out of 69 runners and beat some serious cars - R32, MKII Focus RS, beat some Scoobies too.
Not bad for a little 1.39 litre car eh?
-
so when you fitting a jet engine with afterburners in the boot. Any other plans you have for this?
-
Top speed achieved was 142.97 mph ( showed as 160 mph on the speedo )
the 10% extra reading gets a bit more significant at those speeds! Presumably there was more to go on a longer strip?
-
so when you fitting a jet engine with afterburners in the boot. Any other plans you have for this?
Never say never
Next plans are to get a hybrid specific map for the car, then a DSG remp, uprated rear brakes, full engine mounts, uprated forged pistons and rods, DSG uprated clutchpacks and a few more bits.

There was a little more to come, but once over 140mph the speed creeps up slowly. The useable part of the airstrip for acceleration is 1.2 miles, but you are braking before the marker as there are huge water filled buttresses either side of the marker and then an offset gap 100 metres after that. The brakes on my car are good, but at over 140mph you don't feel like risking it too much. On the flat with the same room I reckon over 145 easy and maybe 155 given enough distance.
-
Loving the motor...Good work!

Good stuff- plenty fast enough on a wet day! No issues with the lack of LSD at the current output, its not on the list of priorities? Does the electronic system do a reasonable job?
-
If its like the electronic diff on the 2.0TFSI, it should be spot on, even when mapped and modded to 360bhp the 2.0TFSI have no torque steer at all, foot planted down, no hands on steering wheel and it will go in a straight line.

Been a bit lax in keeping this thread up to date :embarassed:
Went to Elsecar mega meet and cleaned the car and then finished with the DA polisher followed by a good waxing and the result was this.....
Thanks to the guys who took these shots as I only had my crappy phone with me.
Also recently tried some VCDS setting alterations and ramped up all the settings on the map and WMI mix to try and get a decent run after altering the settings. Warmer weather and clean, dry roads after the rain along with a few hard previous runs to warm the tyres up resulted in the following (all done at the same spot as previous runs)
0-100mph in 11.8 seconds off a decent 5.1 to 60mph, so running the richer mix with setting C and setting off with traction control on in S mode seems to be the way to go for a 1/4 mile run and resulted in the following...........
Clearly a better top end power with a 107.2mph terminal, but still only a 13.5 *note to self - must try harder!*
as you can see by the G-Force, the pull is strong too!
These are the best runs and several were hampered with the dreaded DSG torque limiter , so still need that DSG remap sooner rather than later.
The good sign is that there were no faults came up on VCDS after the runs, the bad sign is that I appear to be running out of front tread on the tyres.

Shiny! Another in the 'want one' camp here, especially if VW never come out with a Polo R. Great performance figures too.

Whats the latest on the uprated blower and DSG map???
The uprated blower works well but is hampered by the OEM DSG software. No resolution for the software yet. Hopefully this year there will be something available later this year.

Need a few more targets already .......
0-60mph - target still under 5 seconds
0-100mph - new target is 13 seconds
1/4 mile - new target is 13.6 seconds
Err, need some more targets again
-
New targets...
0-60mph - 4.7 seconds - will need wider R888's and some new, wider alloys to get this.
0-100mph - 11.5 seconds - This will need the full hybrid tune and DSG map.
1/4 mile - 13.5 seconds - need this to be an official dragstrip rather than my GPS data logger - purely for my sanity and officially sanctioned time. I'd like the terminal to be over 105mph too
Possible or not? Who knows, but I'm not one to give up easily.
-
chasing 3 tenths of a second eh john  the little olop will have to start shedding weight soon!
-
Just read through the thread, great work :afro:
I was having a good look round this at Elsecar, I apologise if I left any dribble marks on the paintwork
-

As always
I'm resisting altering the interior, but some carbon parts maybe in the pipeline. I want to run wider front tyres which means going for some carbon fibre wings - less weight and ultimately more grip = win

So they new turbo...How much did you gain? Did you get the map tweaked at all?
When does the new DSG map gon on, are they still developing it?
This thing is definitely turning into a proper pocket rocket! Pretty sleeperish as well I reckon!

The hybrid map and the DSG map are currently in development and I'll have to wait a while for it. Currently running 258bhp on setting B of Revo stage 2 with the wmi on at a mild mix of 25/75 without the DSG limiter cutting in. 270-280bhp is the target once the maps are onboard.
-
Not that I condone this  but have you had any lil races with others and for them to be really shocked?
Good work Hurdy!!

I just threw up my breakfast. That is disgusting. You know what will happen though...you will hit 280 and then want for the big 300, would this be achievable? What if you upped the mix of the wmi? Run just meth or just water (I don't know which one, or if either would give more power?) What else could you do to plan for breaking the 300...I'm just forward thinking
Who the hell is developing the map...give em a kick up the arse!
-
Contact APR, my mate had his TT RS taken off him by them for development purposes and they lent him their golf for a few weeks while they used his TT for research and development.
Worth a try, especially when no one has gone as far as you have.
-
Was it you going over the brightside jct today at about 3pm ish? I think it was and your car is looking disgustingly subtle. I feel sorry for anyone who decides to test you out. :afro:

APR are developing the map on a VRS with a hybrid map etc. They have his car for 5 months.

300 bhp would be achievable as there is already a chap with a golf and the same engine putting out 360bhp. Muchos Dinero for the build as it includes quite a few custom parts as well as an engine build.
I don't think I'll go that far as I already have my next project in the pipeline.

Can you please tell me where to buy it from?
Thanks in advance.

Since I had mine on Revo have become the official UK outlet for Loba products.
However if you go onto vagoc supersi is on there and has his own section for selling Loba products. He will usually get you a bit off the price too. Link below is for the Loba section on Vagoc

Bought some Okada plasma coilpacks last week.
What can I say apart from they do exactly what it says on the tin.
Fitted these today and my word they make a difference.
i. Smoother idle
ii. much perkier at the top of the rev range
Okada quote the following for these coilpacks....
i. Up to 6% more hp
ii. Up to 6% more torque
iii. Faster spool up/throttle response
iv. Reduced fuel consumption
v. Lower emissions
vi. smoother idle
Also in the 1.4TSI they help eliminate potential misfires too by giving a much stronger spark that simply cannot be overwhelmed by the injectors.
I fitted them myself in 15 mins and they just work!
I'll be swapping back to the stock coilpacks at some point for back to back dyno runs to see if they do give any extra oomph, but the car certainly feels better and it isn't just the "bum dyno"
They aren't cheap though, but for me they are worth every penny.
Apparently these make 6bhp/lbft gains on a stock MKIV GTI Turbo 150 (petrol), so the butt dyno may not be wrong as the water methanol injection needs extra ignition to get the best burn, so should give the little GTI more boooooooooosssstt!

Went to GTI International today, very wet, very busy and as soon as it stopped raining I used my 4 run passes down the strip.
Best time of the morning was 14.02 with a 5.49 second 0-60. Not as good as I'd hoped, but the surface was very wet and add to that the DSG torque limiter cutting in, it wasn't too bad.
I must say that I enjoyed the handling course more than the sprint. Ended up with a 40.07 second run. The guy on the stand taking down the time told me beforehand that anywhere near to 40 seconds was excellent. The guys on the stand with track prepped cars and racing tyres were managing 39.6 to 39.7, so I was well impressed with the car. However, the guy from Bilstein said if I had set the car up on full hard with the damping then the car would have been just as good as the track cars!!
Bodes well for the next trackday.

Sweet bro! So your quickest run...Was it the 60-100 that you 'struggling' with? That 0-60 is pretty quick
What was the massive secret that you couldn't tell anyone... :nerd:
-
Saw a certain someone in the queue at the weekend. Tried to say hello but you kept looking the other way lol

The "secret" didn't work. :embarassed: If it had done I'd be rocking an accessible 300bhp
Sorry Alan :embarassed:
Notice the car next to me? That was the car that had the accident. I went down against it in the morning. Glad it didn't have the steering wheel off then as we were head to head most of the way!
-
There was some quick cars going up the strip, those 2 caddys were rediculously quick!
-
The Q7 was also INSANE!
-
Trust you to notice the diesel Mr Dell

The Q7 was also INSANE!
I concour!

Atleast tell us what the secret almost was?
I missed most of the proper quick cars on Sunday by the sounds of it! Saturday was still pretty intense

So next month I'll be in the VW Driver magazine twice!

Bit of an update.
Had a play with the car on Statllers Dyno today and it made 220WHP!!!
For everyone in the UK that works out at 255bhp. Not too bad to say the Polo still hasn't been fully tuned to the hybrid turbo. Two runs also gave over 257bhp, but the dyno operator held off the accelerator pedal to avoid kick down and so the torque curves were lower. The one below was the best combination of bhp and torque.
The car is running silky smooth at the moment and the overall mods have produced a lovely motor. 8)

Tested the car out at Blyton Park this weekend. Lovely little track with plenty of off-track run-offs if you get over exhuberant with the throttle out of corners The Polo performed very well indeed and ate up plenty of other cars on track during the day. There were some downsides to the day........
1. My car wasn't the fastest
2. The car definitely needs an oil cooler as temps were over 130oC when the WMI ran out on one session.
3. The car has inordinate thirst for Water Methanol - I took over 10 litres of the stuff and was down to the last litre when I left.
The upsides were.......
1. The Federal 595RSR's were really great on track - I doubt if tyres at £50 a corner dearer would perform any better. They didn't wear too much and didn't go "chewy" like some of the softer compound tyres do.
2. The car handles very well - for a change I set the car up on the damping to full hard as the track is absolutely flat, although hitting some of the corner strips did induce spinal shock!
3. The car is fast on track too, and I mean faster than my Ed30 would have been, especially in cornering.
Here is a video that one of the guys took on the day. You briefly see my car storming past at around 1'45" and again lapping him at 9'35"
